  1. it was lloydy's picture of those two pups which made me think of that picture of fryers pups. thanks darbo. phil, did you ever meet fryer? or see any of his dogs?
  2. domestic dogs were available to mesolithic people.
  3. very nice too. what happened about the police balls-up on your previous trip to scotland? did you ever get an apology or anything?
  4. anyone remember aubrey fryer? he reckoned he had pure smithfields in the 80s and was crossing them to greyhounds, as i recall
  5. that waterbuck looked good, how does that head rate?
  6. even if the land is really good, you will really struggle to make a living off it. load it with the right crops (grain, pulses or roots are the best in terms of energy efficiency, and storage. dont bother with greens or fruit) and you could live self sufficiently. and you would be working flat out to work that land on your own. look on it as a way to make a bit of a top up financially, dont expect to make a fortune but you will certainly have great fun, and have a lovely place to mess about with your boy personally, i would go for goats or deer, they will need very little looking after if
  7. go look at some of the southern woodland red deer, they make them on the moors look like toys. see if they northern lads beddy whippets can catch those ones.......... i agree the divide is because there are fewer people running lurchers in the south, and so there hasnt really been a culture grow up around running dogs like there is in parts of the north. cultures like this invariably beget a hierarchy
  8. me dad had a tough life, and despite going through some awful stuff he is the only person i know who genuinely has always let evrything wash over him, just has a stoic acceptance that what will be will be. i have always tried to share this fatalistic approach, and to be honest i've been through some bad shit over the past couple of years but have coped ok without really getting too worried or upset. i remember also these famous words from the great aussie cricketer keith miller, when asked by a reporter if he was feeling stress during a test match, miller - who was a fighter pilot durin
  9. http://islam.about.com/od/hajj/a/adha.htm a lot of men will slaughter a sheep/goat etc for this event each year, in their backyard or garage or whatever. i believe this may be where some of these rustled sheep may go? certainly at that time of year i reckon they end up this way

    Help

done, now everyone will know what a wimp i am!
  11. now i'm not quite up with you blokes in the methuselah stakes, but i'm not far off, and i really get what you say about the perspective we gain with age. this has been the worst season for rabbits that i have had for many many years, but do you know it just doesnt bother me that much; i am getting out as much as ever, but i tire now, and if i have a decent dig then i know all about it the next day. but i will keep on as long as i can draw breath, i couldnt go on without dogs and hunting.
  12. i think the cup winning england team were a great side, look how they bossed the southern hemisphere teams, but wales haent been a great side, just a good team playing in a mediocre six nations championship. wales have been content to be the big fish in the little pond, but not done the necessary work to shine on the world stage. they will struggle in the world cup, as they have in most previous ones. i thpught an inexperienced england team would be too brittle across the back line, but in fact i saw more invention and creativity than i have done for quite some time. if those lads had pl

  19. i was watching a herd of about 30 fallow one morning last summer, they were all laid down at the edge of a meadow. a fox comes out of the wood about 100 yards away, starts quartering the meadow i guess hunting voles or such. the deer all look straight at it, then all stand up and start walking towards it. fox looks but isnt too worried, keeps hunting. deer start to trot, very focussed on the fox now, and he begins to slink back towards the wood but suddenly the whole herd are stampeding at him, flat out, and foxy is running for his life, last 40 yards are a real out and out course, he iis twis
