  1. Yes, it can be a bit soul destroying , working for hours,.. for scant reward? I've hunted rabbits over most of the UK, and there is no doubt that, currently,..the North of the country has the largest population of conies. However,..(when talking of the Dales), it pays to remember that not every open Fell or large tract of Moor, has a vast quantity of rabbits. I've been visiting this amazing country for several decades and have enjoyed hunting over some beautiful terrain. Luckily,..I have always been guided by local lads... Obviously, guys that hunt the area on a regular basis k
  2. ? I guess they bred em tough in good old Pompey? Live yer life the way that you want to fellah....?
  3. Back in the late 1980's...I sold one of my original Greyhound x ACD lurchers to a well-known Coypu hunter in Suffolk... The dog was lost whilst hunting in the river... He got tangled up in the river debris and was drowned...? I'll never forget when a wee army of his good friends came knocking on my door.. with a bag full of vonga .. They were trying to buy a replacement jukel for their good pal.. Sadly I had nothing spare...my Cattle Dog project was done and dusted... What genuine friends that man had...I've never forgotten that....?
  4. Its good to have a dream....I wish you well?
  5. Raw Green Tripe is a great additive to a working dogs diet,...I like to mix it with chicken and beef..? Problem today, is finding a source for whole tripe's... In my area, the Abattoir scene is firmly controlled by the Pet Food Mafia. They get kinda bitchy if ya try to muscle in ..? I suppose there is good money to be earnt in supplying Raw foods for dogs,..so the freebie days are now over..? My jukes are just pets nowadays, so conditioning isn't quite so critical,..but they still deserve good scran.. Go careful now Brothers,...stay safe,..regards, OldPhil.?
  6. Dogs are funny old critters,..some of them are equally as mad as their owners? Personally,..I can handle most idiosyncrasies that an otherwise, genuine working dog, might have,.but over the years..having had a preference for the Herding composites, I have encountered some strange behavioural traits..? It kinda goes with the territory.... The only thing that really messes life up for me in a jukel, is nervousness, and a spooky temperament... Most 'problems' are surmountable,..but if a working dog is temperamentally unsound,...it does make schooling twice as difficult to achieve..
  7. Yeah, I'm not much for books,..my collection have all gone to good homes, but I do remember receiving a copy of Dutch's Salmon's Coursing book. I could readily see that Dutch was a genuine 'good old Boy' and he sure seemed to love his hunting... There was a lot of images of Whippet, Greyhound and Saluki's, all running together on a Jack rabbit, kinda thing... Not really my bag,...although I've seen plenty of accidental slips (both daytime, and God -Forbid, at Night?)_ To me,..a pack of jukels, tight on the arse of a hare, always looks a tad messy... Mind you,..differe
  8. That pup has a nice, 'responsive look' about it.... Take your time Brother, and I feel that you will have a nice jukel ?
  9. Talking of Pubs? I've had some great sessions, in the Old Style Pompey Pubs,...some of these ancient buildings were architectural monuments and having survived the bombs, destined for the nearby Dockyard,. they evoked a kinda unique atmosphere, one that was conducive, to getting rat-arse pissed with a collection of truly crazy , like-minded souls... Halcyon Days,...? Stay safe Brothers,...regards, OldPhil.?
  10. Bosun,.. You are not alone in taking a fancy towards that old style lurcher type..?. Back in the day, I had a useful lurcher bitch, name of Mercedes... I had some great times, both day and night with this keen animal, and I decided to take a pup from her.. But, what to use ? Almost by chance, I encountered a big heavy coated Herding dog that was used as a sheep worker up high on the vast chalk Down land, twixt West and East Sussex.... He was steel Grey in colour and was colloquially known, as a Blue Shag... The dog , in common with many roustabout working curs, w
  11. Al has Covid....and even worse, he has lost his sense of taste....I feel for the poor guy..?
  12. Lovely write up NEWKID... So good to see hunting lads enjoying each other's company and having the craic... Money raised for a good cause, and plenty of banter no doubt,..thrown in for free,...just as it should be? Well done to all concerned...? All the best, stay safe, OldPhil?
  13. ? This freelancing business has always been a contentious subject,..and my guess is, it always will be? I cannot speak for the Dales hunters,..I live in the Deep South, and Landowners, Keepers and Farmer's attitudes to 'lads just having a wee wander'...is completely different... It frequently gets, emotional..? In my area, good rabbiting areas are at a premium..we just don't have the big numbers of seemingly endless populations of conies and when you hit a place really hard and serious,..then,..that is often, that.... We do not have the geographical terrain that allows rabb
  14. Well done, that looks like a meal from the days of the Tudors?
  15. ? I've scant knowledge of Bull bred Lurchers,.. however,...I would endorse that advice regarding breeding.. I remember , many years ago when I kept 'Hard Blood' , non pedigree, race whippets.. My stock was used mostly for hunting, and the inevitable injuries sustained whilst coursing and roustabout rabbiting, ensured that we were forever in sick bay, and our attendance on Sunday morning race day, was pretty lack-lustre? Accordingly, I fancied that I could produce a world beater by putting my bitches to Top Class racing Studs. Nowadays, things might possibly be different,..m
  16. You can't beat having a few pups about the place... Proper wee 'time wasters',...but great fun?
  17. Try.. Buy Shan Best Ginger Garlic Paste Online | Shan Food WWW.SHANFOODSSHOP.COM Shan Foods ginger and garlic pastes are carefully selected, processed and packed to ensure premium... Most of the UK on -line sites will sell a similar paste. Pompey is choc-a -block with ethnic food shops,...who would have ever thought it, eh..? WE buy a few jars of this at a time,..its quick and easy to use....?
  18. Foxes are becoming more and more commonplace? See them quite a bit, when I'm out and about...?
  19. A working dog should catch his Boss a dinner...its only fair?
  20. ? A Local Butcher who I supplied scores of rabbit to,.. had a great idea.. He tried the old favourite of "You have all read the book ( Watership Down),.. you have seen the Film,...now try the stew!" Fecking silly move in my opinion..? The sight of the furry cast all hanging upside down in his shop window, and on route to the Junior School....caused a right royal rumpus.. I did warn him?
  21. Beautiful , lovely dogs,..much maligned canines and worthy of far more respect, than some folk give them....?
