Early mole trap, type, in use
OldPhil replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yes, that was Tony P? The wee paper pamphlet he sent out, was simply a few bits of A5 stapled together,.I think he earned a few bob from that wee project,...and bloody good luck to him? I never took much notice of the construction of the wooden half barrel mole trap,..I can barely put air in a car tyre, and I have no practical ability whatsoever, so it meant nothing to me. I am pleased to see my fellow trappers making their own tools,...it must be nice to have such skills..? -

You are enjoying yourself? -
Locally, we all had whippets,...and we all managed to kill a few hares... Good old times...? Actually,..when you look at the jukels all around our beautiful Island,...the Whippet influence has been phenomenal...The inclusion of these diminutive speedsters within many lurcher types really does make for an attractive and exceptionally useful, rabbiting helper.... ?

Good practice to do that....? I was at a meeting in Alresford once and it was, straight run up,..no turns, just a pick up The Secretary came over to us lurcher boys watching in the crowd and said,.."What do you think lads,..yes or no"? We gave him a resounding no... Fair play to the man, he stopped proceedings on the spot, and we abandoned that part of the Estate and moved onto fresh ground.. I think the hares were obviously sick or had been effected by crop sprays,.whatever ? Its curious that organised Hare Coursing was banned so easily,.when you think of all the

Jeemes,...the guy you are thinking of is Roger Upton. Real interesting, well travelled fellah to talk to.. Sadly, I've just learned he succumbed to Parkinson's . He lived one hell of a Sporting Life....? R.I.P.?

Bedlington x whippet taking fox?
OldPhil replied to Salford black dog's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
You are right there Katchum? I am not a fan of the hybrid myself,...unless the end result has the big old jaw of an old style Beddy, and the Whippet half is one of those chunky, big barrel chested feckers...? I've enjoyed watching these 30/35 pounders break a bush in half when they scent a vulpine.... I was once out with some digging lads and they had a strong rough coated Beddy lurcher. It wasn't much of a size, but had a kind of strange seriousness about its demeanour...? When a fox bolted from an earth, the dog rolled it in about twenty yards... It was straight onto the -
Bedlington x whippet taking fox?
OldPhil replied to Salford black dog's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
With such a diminutive tyke , it is all down to their intent,...and to be honest, a lot of jukels frequently bite off more than they can chew..? I've seen several dogs spit out a vulpine in double quick time, when he retaliates... The small dogs are incredibly useful in dense bracken and rough woodland areas... They are often able to keep in contact with the fox , especially if they bolt fast from a shallow earth. Obviously, not the ideal dog for the job, but if that is all you have available and you are trying to clear an area of foxes, with traps , wires, etc, they do hel -
I've always had whippets and whippet based lurchers, for the rabbiting job... These were the first dogs I encountered when I left my native Wales....I was captivated ..? Bred various permutations and hybrids to suit the dense woodlands and Ditch busting adventures, and I've enjoyed being around these dynamic canines. The cur dogs that I have today, are a judicious mix, of Sooty Sam, Working style Whippet and my friend Barry Sharp's Border Collie Sheepdog blood.... ? My target species today, is strictly rabbits, so a diminutive runner is just about ideal... ? Its good

Fabulously evocative images Green Lurchers? I used to follow on behind the Slipper at some of the events, mostly the larger hounds. Its amazing just how strong and skillful you need to be, to get the dogs balanced in slips, and away, evenly? I tried it a few times myself and it is definitely an acquired knack!

OldPhil replied to Rudeboy 1's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
?I love ratting,...great fun for man and dogs whilst serving a definite pest control need. Seen all sorts at the job, from Terriers to farm collies and they make a grand job of helping to rid us of this noxious pest? Curiously enough,...some of my best ratters have been,....whippets... Facts are,..when these lightening fast hounds take to the vermin job, there isn't much to match that strike...? -
Wow, what a fabulous looking animal..?

Well done dawnraider09 ? Its nice to be out with an old style mouching jukel. I miss my original rough coated gals,..they used to please me every time I watched them moving around, or waiting up behind a bury,...always something different to see...Real interesting and entertaining,.more so when they get on the move....? Have fun,..stay safe, OldPhil.?

Well done Brother,..life is too short to waste it being around negative thinkers and dross heads,..if you do not walk,.they will eventually kill your soul, and that would be criminal...? I have always walked my own path,..it has been so hard, and my poor temperament and inner Demons have definitely made the walk far harder than it should have been... But, I've learned my lesson....bit late I know, but there ya go.. I wish you good fortune for the future,..stay safe now, regards, OldPhil.?
