  1. Personally,...? I've only bred genuine first crosses using Pastoral Sires,...I like most of the Herding types , so producing a frequently larger edition is really no big deal. I can only talk of the sheepdog and Cattle Dog composites that I've bred, but one thing I want to see from such a hybrid is plenty of robustness, tractability and physical traits of good strong feet and short sturdy wrists. If my end product starts to resemble a pure running dog, I feel that I have failed. The streamlining effect and the addition of extra speed can come later, in the next cross... As for that n
  2. ? Well, I've never owned a Smithfield Collie,..but back in the day,..I found a rangy heavy -coated Herder, working on the South Downs. I was visiting a traditional Sheep Fair at Findon in Sussex, and I saw this strange critter in the back of a pick up. The good old boys that owned him said he was just a roustabout, rough and ready farm dog, and that similar types used to be common,.but were no longer kept. They called him a Blue Shag... I used the dog across my Mercedes bitch and produced a quite amazing litter... Exciting days.? Connie 9 months.....
  3. ? Personally,..I believe that the initial hybridisation twixt two different types , whilst being more than satisfactory for most enthusiasts, invariably tempt many of us to go to the next stage, and try to produce, something better. I've attempted to create a superior end-product on several occasions, but my results have not always been better than the first attempts. Yes, I've admittedly gone up a notch speed-wise and even in stature,..but, sometimes I've felt that it had been a bit of a waste of time.? The one thing that any sane and sensible running dog/lurcher enthusiast should always
  4. ?If folk are talking large Deer , then I suppose we are thinking along the lines of Red Deer. I think FUJI is speaking from his own experience, so I'll not disagree. I remember,..back in the 1980's returning home from Lambourn Lurcher Show..we had three Deerhound type lurchers in the Transit Van and I thought it would be handy to let them have a quick spin the New Forest. Almost immediately, we bumped into a small herd of Red Deer...these were exceptionally large deer, far bigger than anything I had seen previously. Our dogs were running loose and soon coursing them across the Heath
  5. You would love that GypsyDog? I grew up walking similar places around the Elan Valley,...every fecker turned out with a cur or a mongrel running dog. When a dog took a line it was great,..they would go for miles and we would follow on, best as we could? Quite a melee when the lead dog connected....? Real unique style of hunting,...I miss it...?
  6. Unbelievable? What is the fecking world coming to?
  7. Some folk's want a different mode of behaviour from their dogs ? No right or wrong ,.just different..?
  8. Keep cool, grit yer teeth, everything will fall into place,..eventually..?
  9. Locally,...there was a real good line of Pit Bull x Greyhound....I saw this type back in the late 90's, just when I had decided to quit trying to get myself,..Jail time? Prior to walking out with this style of jukel I had 'done alright' on the deer with all sorts of miscellaneous crossbred critters....However,..nothing I had would match the pure physicality and prey drive of the Bull/Saluki/Greyhound composites that are available today..I missed out on running such obviously handy animals, but I am pleased that the lads persevered with their breeding programs, and produced such amazing specime
  10. ?Yeah,...I think these lads know exactly what they are doing...?
  11. Many lads in my area keep this mix of running dog,....they are exceptional beasts,...not much can evade them...?
  12. Hampshire and Sussex are just the same,....an innocent mouch in the woods, is fast turning into a stressfest? I don't need it at my time of life,...my poor old heart cannot take it?
  13. Pretty wee jukel,...you will have some good times on the rabbits with her?
  14. That sounds a great way of life fellah? I'me a retired old guy, but I still do four months on the Wasps during the Summer,.. then I trap the moles in the Springtime. I still like to travel around the country in the late Autumn /Winter time, meeting interesting folk and playing around just hunting up a few rabbits..I never take many, just enough for some sport for the dogs. Locally, here in the South, we do not have the shushis in large numbers anymore, so unless I get asked to clear a particular place (for cash)..I pretty much leave them alone. I've killed more than enough...?
  15. I've had several Bedlington lurchers over the years,..good honest animals,..no complaints. One or two examples seemed to take to the rougher end of our game, and acted accordingly,..but for myself, I've only ever used them to help out with ferrets, or work under the spotlight. My favourite hybrids came via the Rillington Bedlington Terrier influence. I found that George's dogs, due to their crossbreeding with Border and Lakeland terriers, often sported a thicker, crisper jacket,..not all of course, but some of them. I preferd this type of coat on the Bedlington lurcher, although one of
  16. Superb, erudite post, penned with a passion born of genuine experience in the field....just as it should be...?
  17. I'm of the same mind fellah? When I was catching up the Roe, we didn't have to run very many at night to bag up,..consequently, other than bad luck on the flint, we seemed to get away without knocked up toes when running the Deerhound types.. However, when I started doing the rabbit control job, I was out with nets and ferrets most days and lamping often nights as well... Some 'sensitive' jobs had to be undertaken after dark , so the rabbiting dogs often took a real hammering due to the constant chases. I just kept fecking their feet up....it was a disaster? It was then that
  18. ? So, if anyone puts up a picture of a young dog, from back in the day,..do they have to include an image of the quarry that was legal to pursue, at the time... Can't we just post an image ....?
  19. I bred some real useful Bedlington Lurchers in the 1990s,..nice and easy to live with...?
