Lee, I think Broon's right though, up to a point for most and I also know there are many that train to a very high standard and long may that remain but the modern Lurcher's game has come a long way since the first half of the last century. If I am gonna breed my ultimate lurcher I know one thing for sure, it wouldn't come direct out of a greyhound...

BF, the thing is, you should WANT your bitch to fetch rabbits back alive, thats the mark of a good lurcher...!! Remember, with edible quarry a lurcher is a 'catcher', not a 'dispatcher', thats YOUR job...! Personally, you should encourage her to do so and take them off her in a calm and praising manner. She's young and, by the sounds of it, level headed, she knows from that first pick up that they'll offer her no problems and return 'em to you, unharmed. Now.. Quality mate, I remember being a young kid around 78/79...... Monkey boots, docs, tonic trousers and always Madness playing. First seen 'em in the Royal Court when at school. Seen 'em most other tours since. The Echo last week. The one date me an me mates from school never miss, a Madness gig, seven 45 year olds trying to re-live a miss spent youth... I've hunted the dunes for over 30 years, just get yourself a lurcher to lurcher bred animal of average height (22" to 25") and out of sound working parents, you'll have lot of fun with a dog of that type. Edited to add... You'll be surprised what type of dog can do well on that type of ground, it's different running but brought on to it well, some big 'ol powerhouses of mutts can be very impressive...

An old boy I once worked with bred Deerhound crosses back in the day, when they where 'the' dogs to knock over hares. He always said that the best of 'em came out of Deerhound dams to greyhound sires. He always said that finding good bitches was much harder than finding good dogs and good bitches should be cherished and bred from. It's something thats always stuck with me and I've always admired a good bitch. Right now, I know I could not use all the digits of one hand to say how many good bitches I personally know of but I could at least double that with dogs. I really can't answer the ques -

I kept ferrets from age 12 to 33 and like you Liam, I couldn't do them justice anymore BUT for me now, 12 years later, as others have said, they'll pull you back and i'm soon to reacquaint me self with the little critters...
