  1. Kev's spitting distance from Huyton, hardly far...! Get yourself a 'dog freezer' and stock up for a couple of months.
  2. You only have to flick through Plummers Fell Terrier to see the Border blood in Frank Bucks early dogs Tex being the prime example. Then along the way with his relationship with Breay (who also had Bordery types early on, as shown in the FT photo ) 'other' blood must have been added to change the type to the Skiffle and more so, Rusty types. Like Grockle i've seen a few different types come out of Brians yard over the past 30 years and he took most of his line off them. Rough coats, smooth coats, bigger bully types ( like Miner) to them tiny pug lookin things. Its all supposed to be the same
  3. The only yardstick i use to measure if a dog is an allrounder is its ability to take all four legged quarry by any given method... Everything else is just 'fluff'...!
  4. I was at a show one day when a none hunting man approached BN as he had a black bitch given to him that he'd been told looked like Brians stuff. Brian confirmed that it was indeed his stuff and told the bloke to bring it to him for a line when in season and he'd buy the pups back for resale. Which in time he did... An old mate of mine once sold a half border/russell to EC, which he went on to show and studd as his own stuff... Funny old world aint it... Mind how you go.
  5. I'd agree with that JD, though for me the bottom line has to be 'able to catch all quarry whenever required'.
  6. Spot on Ali, i really dont know what folk do in other types to keep em so long, because they all jib when the going gets tough but i've given my Puroforts some real stick and they look like they'll last forever. I'll never buy anything else now either.
  7. Think its a trip to the shops for you Trenchy, get that Mrs of yours sommat nice for Christmas.
  8. A mate of mine bred that cross a few years back by putting one of his match dogs over a GWP bitch. That saluki blood keeps em trim and fast. I had enough on at the time and turned down the offer of a pup and later when i found out how well they were doing i regretted i missed my chance.
  9. Those of you, like me, who still hold Fell Boots in high regard may be interested to know there are two pair on ebay at the moment (i cant put a link up as i'm in my phone!). They only have hours left and the reason they are worth looking at is that they were originally sold by Cecil 'tickle' Otway a bootmaker in Ambleside, who made fell boots for the greats of Fell Hunting. I say sold and not made but you can bet your bottom dollar that if he sold em they would have been top draw as he handmade some of the best! I was lucky enough to meet and talk to the old man in the early nineties when
  10. In the whole lurcher spectrum, nothing is more undervalued than sound quality bitches which should go on to be bred from...!
  11. Back in the day it was a given, a 'must' to show gratitude and it breaks down any barriers, further permo or all the goodies that can come from a farm may come your way over the coming year, eggs and homemade cakes have been made very welcome! Of course its personal preference to give at this time of year and i'd like to think every generation keeps us in a good light and makes the effort to drop a bottle off.
  12. I think he means when your are home, plenty of time out to get to know the place and settle in. Also a dog given time and space out is usually the cleanest of all dogs.
  13. Sounds like the pup is nevous as hell of the big bad world and leaving the warmth and protection of its siblings and mother. Too timid and probably to cold leave the kennel to crap. Is it kenneled next to others, would they be growling it back? It will probably stop once it realises its ok but as annoying as it is, you got to feel a bit sorry for winter puppys. In my mind you have two choices, either bring it in and cage it for a few weeks or let the poor bugger tough it out and if you do the latter, make damn sure its real cosy in that kennel and you give it plenty of time when your home.
  14. I read somewhere last week that 65% of all tv over the xmas will be repetes... Shocking! Then couple that with the shite films they feed us and its gonna be piss poor viewing. I dont even mind the Christmasy type films but there are some great movies made yet they always feed us the same safe slop!!
  15. There is no justification for torture, yet i do it to myself evertime i let my bin lickers lift a hare from its seat.... !
  16. Aye that dogs in good nick, once upon a time a Lurcher seen on somewhere like Rice Lane was a rare thing and a quick call or two would see a dog back with its hunting owner, sadly we now live in a lurcher saturated world and any tom dick or harry has em. Fair play for trying BUT don't burden yourself, if no one wants it then take it to one of the multitude of shelters in the city and get yourself a decent nights kip.
  17. Greg Lake said it best... 'The Christmas we get we deserve...'
  18. As a kid growing up, every woman in our street scrubbed the step on a Sunday morning, shame on those who didnt! Those old values have gone now and mores the pity!
  19. Just back to them collie crosses, i always found, pre-ban, that it was all about timing and the best on bigger gear were usually the late starters.... (?)
  20. carry a tub of potassium permanganate crystals in your pocket, clots almost instantly Yep, but thats learned the hard way...!!
  21. Just on them Deeryhound mutts... Paddy, I was talking to an aquaintance tonight who was offering a fair few bob for that dog of yours but whatevers on the table, your only offers are 'killing gear as long as the dog can run, or swapping it to me for a clapped out Ox.... your call...!!! And anyway, where the feck where you tonight, it was a full house!
  22. Not much in this game looks worse, when pulled by the plod, than a white dog with a bad ear rip...!
  23. Ahh chocolate, its this ( last and next) seasons 'must have'.. Sadly, i can remember when it wasnt so popular and had the name 'liver'!
