now conformation wise, that is a much better specimen; she looks as though she can run. what lines is she from? as for crossing the show stuff with greyhounds, what is the point? a low grade rough coated lurcher type at best. there are plenty of very good rough coated lurchers about already. leave the show stuff in the ring where it belongs and concentrate on finding the last remaining working deerhounds

if it isnt a proven worker i wouldnt breed from it myself

many of us had deer/grey cross collie/grey in the 80s, almost the standard lurcher of its time, and most made reasonable all rounders. not sure how many were genuine, as there would have needed to be a hell of a lot of coursing deerhounds at stud lol. google sorisdale deerhounds, now i know it is difficult to judge conformation from photos, but some of those dogs look more like camels or donkeys than deerhounds, and certainly none have what we would look for in a working hound. seem to be big heavy cloddy things too, and excessive weight added to poor feet would certainly explain why the c

just time and practice, tell your mate not to be in a rush. and if you want to ruin its retrieve forever then run it doubled up! can't see any reason you would ever double up on a rabbit!

i dont know if this story is actually true or not, but this is one story i heard: bloke phones the police 999 says i have an intruder in my garden, police say we have no officers available at present lock your doors and stay inside. bloke phones back a few minutes later and says he has shot the intruder. within a few minutes there are cops everywhere, armed response dogs the lot. when they fail to find a body, policeman says "i thought you said you had shot somebody" bloke replies "and i thought you said you had no officers available"

Taking The Piss To A Whole New Level.
beast replied to forest of dean redneck's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
forget the price for a minute, its no more than any pedigree pets are going for and if folk are dumb enough t pay it thats their business if you bred a litter of workers, would you want them going to bunny hugger pet homes? think how many runners you see which dont even get off the lead because the pet owners worry that they will run off hunting. how many hunting dogs spend a life of frustration from not being allowed to work? but pet people still buy lurchers because they like them, not because they understand their requirements, to work hunt run etc go round any of the shows, how many of -

Is It Wise To Cross Along Lurcher Line Back To Pure Greyhound?
beast replied to scotty2306's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i dont think you can generalise really. saw a bitch a few years ago bred from one of david james line bred collie greys put back to a pure grey and she was dynamite, her litter mates produced some very good pups when bred back to james stuff, very close to the root stock but faster but i have seen rubbish bred from pure greys too, lacking the best qualities o either parent and just diluted low-grade greyhounds were the end product. but then again thats pretty much the majority of lurchers round the shows these days -
i should be very wary of putting anything on which may potentially irritate the feet. if you really want to stop her biting and licking, i should go for a weak iodine solution (pevidine or similar). the salt water trick should show some results in a week or two. good luck, let us know how you get on

lol i was going to say ffs dont tie your dogs to the tent pole like my mate did, then a fox started barking in the next field at 3 in the morning.....

traits, behaviour, general stuff can be passed on of course. obviously you can select and breed for certain qualities (eg breed good NATURAL ie genetically retrievers and you end up with labradors) but you could also train say a saluki to retrieve well which wouldnt mean its pups would do the same but just consider the question for a minute, "learned behaviour". if i take a litter off the dancing dog off x factor they are not all going to start dancing as soon as they open their eyes are they? by selecting two parents which learn a certain task easily, you can increase the chances that

i couldnt dream of guessing a cause, but if you soak the feet for 10 or 15 minutes 2 or 3 times a day in a very strong salt water mixture you will definitely harden up the skin to some degree. this will also help to wash off any chemicals/fungi/bacteria etc which may be the cause.

honestly beast I totally agree with you mate and also a lot of the other comments about travellers there all fair comment and not once have I disagreed with anyone of them. But lol I've have made comment when I see someone being a hypocrite saying he can't see why folks are scared of travellers and then in the next breath telling someone to get kids to fire catapults at them . All I was saying was if he can't see why folk are so scared then maybe he should do it himself

whilst i wouldnt want to see the poor man hospitalised again because some nasty lurcher boys attacked him (lol) i should be interested to see the response from him and his customers if he was confronted by any THL members who had maybe printed out certain information to show his customers

You wouldn't believe it but I bumped into some people walking a fecking pig a few years ago in the city. I was with my old lurcher Trevor and it was bloody hilarious We both realised at the same time it wasn't a dog, he went for it, I yanked back on the lead.. the pig had a fit and screamed its bollocks off. I couldn't stop laughing while my ex was tryig to explain that he was a hunting dog and they were walking a pig in the fuucking city brilliant. what the feck were they up to? !!

had a 1999 berlingo 1.9diesel brilliant just kept going and going, i would have another but also was pleasantly surprised by daihatsu hijet i had for some time, my mate still has it and for a small engine (1.3petrol) it can certainly carry its share of weight
