  1. thats a shame it had gone down hill and was pricey. But still nice to visit and now we have sod all
  2. Tend to clash with there mums too some times. Often safer in the crate with the dog
  3. Just go with the flow you won't stop nothing but good luck in your efforts
  4. Lucky dip in the garden centre it is then Must remember not to plant too early either or if I do sneak a couple of early rows in keep them covered up. They got well and truly nipped last year
  5. Must be a joy to have such a versatile dog and the pictures say it all
  6. oh and they make a right rumpus before they bolt with a ferret after them. Quite exciting lol and for some reason they won't duke it out with a ferret at least the ones I seen which is probably just as well
  7. Most definitely and also when you find a hole in a tree they like you can check for years and some times find one at home. My little jack russell taught me that as a kid The lurcher loves them
  8. think I have used them for seed in the past Jok. Trouble with spuds is obviously postage charge. I tend to just pick them up from the various garden centres as a rule
  9. some of the australian/ new zealand hunting forums are big but I guess they have more to go at lol I love this cooking section because I am a piggy http://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co.nz/f49/ http://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co.nz/f49/roast-rabbit-hare-legs-3033/
  10. Wasn't sure what section to stick this but seeing as the black fella is in it all here is as good as any. Set 4 snares last night in a old bramble patch. The rabbits are lamp shy and they come off the railway so can't ferret them. So a nice spot to snare. I went back at midnight to have a nose but no joy so back first thing and success. I saw it from a distance so popped the dog in a sit and left him back a bit all good for him. He is a bit puzzled how I suddenly have the knack of plucking rabbits out of the brambles so that done off for a ferret. During the summer a
  11. This same question came to me this morning as I walking the hedge rows and I decided not very. Thinking back we used to manage fine with an old head light all taped up and you could actually sneak around a bit with it and avoid scaring the game In fact the only time I needed the old blue eye was on the mountain after a hare. Might be time to revert back
  12. Enjoyable reading Memories are great and to be honest I wish I had taken pictures back then just to see the old dogs again. Some things are as clear as day though. My little jack russel seeing his first ever rabbit rabbit as a pup. His ears going up at the rumbling and his surprise when a rabbit flew out under his nose. Couple of days later he gave his first mark in the bracken and from that day the ferret never went in with out his say so. My lurcher tom at two years old and i took him to work one morning extra early and sent him off at a hare i spotted 2 fields away. He went straight
  13. So what spuds are people going to plant this year ? As a main I love Desiree for mash but haven't bothered with main the last couple of years really no point as they are so cheap. But I do grow a second and early spuds. I like Kestrel as they seem to mash, chip well. As a first early last year I tried Maris Bard and they were ok. All ways a job to know
  14. Coming on well Doug and Kass is not going to miss out lol
  15. I did show that chap the picture off this page and he said its not the same dog yesterday
  16. You can just sense a change in the air even though we may still have 3 months of cold ahead. Had a pregnant doe at the weekend and saw a half grown one hopping about. But the most obvious is the rabbits start to spread out and start popping up in spots they haven't been for months
  17. The mrs had a similar picture but with out the text at the bottom and a lot less tape unfortunately
  18. Tons of stuff on youtube as well and articles on the net. But a good book by a decent trainer makes a good read. I think I have a Joe Irving book. I have found that as your trying to train, work a dog and you are a year or two in you can then view, read stuff and you think ah yes that makes sense. I can see now where I went wrong and why and I would have been better doing this and that. You can also spot the complete rubbish. I guess its called experience
  19. I nagged the wife for ages to get a lurcher so when she said yes I was praying it would work because i new it wasn't going any where. I had forgotten what it was like to own a dog bred from workers and got a lot more enthusiasm than I expected Any way nearly 3 years in and I am still moulding him. But for me a dog is for life regardless because i am soft
  20. There is a farm few miles away. The house is on side of the main road and the yard on the other. This old collie sits on the yard side and I assume never crosses the road to its owners house. Been there bloody years and its a main road
  21. first thing catches my eye is the dog looks a right little ferreter bet its a real asset
  22. Mine has got better with age. He has never gone for them but I all ways felt he would like nothing better than to shake the stuffing out one. Good as gold now and an indication of the ferret coming out of his side is him moving back out the way. The big eared tit has been around them all his life
  23. Sounds like you got off to a nice start. As you say a dog would definitely help. Save a lot of time you might spend an hour ferreting around a field for nothing where as the dog would walk round it in 2 minutes and tell you nothing there. But you done well any way by the sound of it
