Great tool in hard ground, saves a lot of time pissing about with a gratf or shovel. We got 1 this season and have used it on a couple of hard digs, money well spent. -
Matt how many deer would you shoot in a season, surely you dont begrudge the man 1 for the freezer.I hear this shit all the time from greedy b*****ds that want every single animal for themselves. There is only so much venison a man can eat unless its solely for £££££ and if thats the case then thats pure greed.

Ya best bring the 2 of them, ive heard they wont work single handed, lol and as for digging boots a certain man told me you would'nt dig worms.

The Fell types that were bred for rocks would have been useless at work,if they were that big.Around that time the biggest influence on Fells/Lakeys was the decline into breeding for the shows and the financial reward, they went from being leggy, wiry grafters,to heavy cobby show winners,on the whole. I can remember going to actually buy a pup from a man in the early 80s and when he showed me the parents i was gobsmacked, thewy were like black wheatens,no way on earth would they get to fox and would even struggle with badger back then. This man was blowing up his dogs by saying that nothing w

Guy down the pub would be right.

If he stops at gates-fences or whatever then he aint game, saw dogs that would go through fences-ditchs without breaking a stride, and a lot of game imo is caught along the hedge-fence line.

Trying New Dogs In An Easy Earth ?
fat man replied to woottonsheart's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
how many digs would you stop at with a first season dog fatman ? Atb AT That depends on the style the dog works, some are hard types some not so it varies. The 2 bitchs i started last season were both dug 12-14 times each but never worked sore, always given proper time to heal.I think the secret is not to hammer them as at the end of the day there not machines and any dog can be sickened. -
Trying New Dogs In An Easy Earth ?

I like to try if possible to keep a 1st season dog-bitch winning everytime its put to ground if possible as it confidence in the terrier and you also get to know the style in which the young dog works.I would give them 5-6 easy places then gradually up the work. Some terriers will take to it like a duck to water while others will need to be brought along at a nice steady pace.I had 2 bitchs that entered 1st time out last season,1 been dug at 8ft on her 4th dig and they went from strenght to strenght but my mate had a dog from the same litter that was very slow to start but when he clicked there -

Trying New Dogs In An Easy Earth ?
fat man replied to woottonsheart's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I totally agree with you,i always try to keep a youngster winning every time its to ground in its 1st season, helps them build confidence,in saying that sometimes it dont stick to the script and what you reckon is easy turns out to be a grueller but the terrier dont know what dept it is so its up to the owner to get down to it and get it out. -
Trying New Dogs In An Easy Earth ?

Many years ago before the locater we used to pass an earth on the bank of a drain. This earth looked like it went down to hell so terriers were always put on a lead when in close proximity to it.One day while doing an earth on the other side of the field with an old dog i had called Spot, the fox bolted and before anyone could catch Spot he was also out and gone after the fox who was heading straight for the earth on the drain.Well they both went down the bank and we guessed had both entered the big earth. We made our way across towards the earth in silence thinking of the job we were goin to hav -
Frost wont keep them to ground, they may shelter from the cold at some time in the night but on a brisk frosty morn they will be out and about hunting. The best weather i find for keeping foxs to ground is wet with a cold wind blowing then they are happy to lie up until it passes, jmo.

like I've said mate I haven't dug for.around 17 years so not green but very rusty and as I've said also I've always seen me dad peg em and it worked for him so thought I'd try that no harm is there but if you had read the post you would of known all of this all my perm is farm land for rabbiting I used to run lurchers but mostly ferret now see lots of fox on the land used to run em Yes Lee i read your post,BUT you also said you used to dig back in your early 20s so you should know what your at and there was no harm meant in my post.Just walk the dog on your permissions when he is old enough
-
If you aint green or new to the digging game then you should know how to get a terrier entered, especially once you've got your own permission,as said if its in the dog he will go himself without watching someone else's dog doing it 1st,also mind who you bring onto your permission as a lot could tag along with you just for the permission alone.

Was out with a couple of lads yesterday for a days digging,Black Stuff of here was up for the day and his digging mate.1st place we hit is a spot that has not let us down yet and yesterday was no exception with a nice dig to a bitch of my own but of Black Stuff's line of dogs.Next place we tried is a fairly big rangy place and we entered Nigger a dog of 10 year old and a dog i rate very highly.I have seen this dog been dug to for the last 5 year and have never seen him put a foot wrong and yesterday was the same with a nice dig to the old warrier which i intend to put back across my bitch[repe

Like the sound of those, bet they will make cracking bushers in the right hands atb. I think they will be spot on , I have 3 griffons and a griffon x beagle , theyre cracking dogs , loads of drive and very biddable , good coats and thick skin, great in thick cover . Mate of mine had a few Griffons years back and great little hounds to hunt but the problem we had with them was that they tended to go to ground and i can remember diging them out on a few occasions but great hounds in heavy cover with brilliant coats on them.He actually crossed a harrier dog over 1 of the bitchs and result
