WHAT A LOAD OF BULLSHIT Well Micky you must know best so but,i always found it a lot easier to run a hare to a net at night then in daylight, jmo.
-
Best time to net hares is at night on the lamp.Suss out the area for a few days and find there runs, gaps in hedges, bridges, gates and all you will need is maybe 1 person along with you to be ready to get to the net as a hare can kill itself jumping about before it gets rightly tangled up.I also think it is less stressfull when done at night. When taking hares out of nets hold them just under the back leg and if there squeeling throw the sack over there head and they stop, little bit of a stick in there gob will stop them from biting as they do give a nasty bite.

Good luck with the pup,Uru,hope he turns into what you want.
-
Can rub thumbs with you there Liam, full shift yesterday then up at 5 for work, not good.
-
Very accurate but also very unreliable, let you down in a heart beat. What i did like about them was when you were just about to break through to a terrier you could pin-point exactly where the dog was in a second.
-
Liam you really need to get out of the house more, lol, thats a nice bitch you got by the way, hope she does whats expected of her.

It was a lot of guess work as to where the fox would try and make his escape, with only a couple of lurchers hard to cover it all but we averaged 50-50.
-
There is an orchard near to me with stone walls all the way around it and a big old iron gate as an entrancce. The walls are about 9ft high and covered in ivy,we have had several foxs of it,just lift a terrier up and let him run it,at some stage the fox will come down either side of the wall.

Would You Take A Newbie Out For A Dig?
fat man replied to man o kent's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Some young lads need a dig, under the jaw, lol,i have brought youngsters out before several times only to find as they get that bit older and have there own dogs they start diging all the places you have took them to and sometimes if a farmer approaches them they just say,i was here before with you know who and farmer accepts this then if any harm is done who gets the blame? -
Both that i dug and ive only dug 2 in 40 years lol, with the same dog, little bullxrussell and he took very little grief of either of them and he was not really the baying type, more take hold and hang on,lol maybe he just got lucky.Did the dog do the second one on a zimmer frame lol Good one FD,no lol, both dug within a year or so of each other and that was back early 80s,bolted 1 from a drain 2 year ago and dog never showed, picked him up on locater and he working away.We thought we were diging to another otter but opened up to a dog fox, both in the 1 drain.

i have known of a similar story perthshire keeper, my uncle reared a couple from pups down through the years amazing to see how tame they get, this was before the protection act of 1976. a license could be obtained to hunt otters in ireland for a period after this act, but if memory serves me right the packs agreed to stop hunting otters and instead all agreed to change to hunting mink as they were vermin and no licence needed, and like all good sporting hunters if the species was in danger they should be rightly left alone......here in munster it has been documented to have one of the healthi

Because the thread is based on Smithy,?

Would it not be tempting fate to put a mute terrier in an earth you dont have an idea of its depth pre-locater days, like if the earth went 3-4 metres in depth you were not going to hear a bump no matter how good the hearing was, hard enough to find a sounding type then let alone the silent ones.

Are Good Terriers Born Or Made?
fat man replied to foxbolter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
If a dog wants it then it will go if not you wont make it go,same as a terrier in the ground taking stick,if it did not want to be there it would come away, but you can also break a good dog,too much too soon, work them sore, over match them,a young terrier starting out needs to be kept winning in its 1st season, then 2nd season you can see exactly what you have reared.jmo. -
Does a locator cover them with body armour? No but at least the terrier if its a hard type can be dug to a lot sooner than pre-locater saving it unnessesary punishment.I know what its like to be crawling about hands and knees listening for the faintest thump or sound, droping bar holes and ear to ground listening, the locater has saved many the dogs life.

had a border x lakie on trial last year supposedly a very good sounder had him loose coming up to an earth and could see he picked a hunt along a bank and went to ground at 100 mph and came out at 200 mph about 30 seconds later completly bust up with his tail between his legs out bolted an otter straight after, and the the dog never entered ground again lol there tuff fu*kers I reckon it was more down to the dog than the otter, tougher game out there pre-ban. had a border x lakie on trial last year supposedly a very good sounder had him loose coming up to an earth and could see h

Not that common a sight around here either. The best time to see them on the rivers around here is when the salmon are making there way up to spawn then you might get a glimpse of one.The 1 we bolted a couple of year back was right on the bank of a river, the drain he/she was in ran right to the edge of the water.1 that i dug back early 80s was in the middle of a wood,a couple of mile from the nearest waterway, the 2nd was in a bank about 100yds from a river and the terrier had run him in.They give a good account of themselves but are in the same class as badger pre-ban.
-
I see them on a regular basis while walking dogs up the bog.The pinemartin was a rare sight up until a few year ago but now they are as common as muck. The forestry people are releasing them in my area, they heve denied it but also have been seen doing it.
-
A month later and someone would probably have had him for tea.

Got out on the lake for a few hours yesterday, weather was not good, very windy and very hard to keep the boat in the direction we wanted to go.My mate caught a nice brown trout and that was it for the day,we were speaking to a few lads that also braved the weather and they said the same,no take.

Bayer-mixer type will take asmuch if not more stick than a lot of harder dogs. The hard dog will take a certain amount before geting to grips with its fox but then the game is over whereas your mixer type will be sparring the whole time and takes a lot of stick especially in a tight spot.jmo.
