I have had them, dug them for years and up until a few year ago was diging to a very good pattxbull.I can understand where Dilly is coming from as i have also seen a lot of bull russells bred that were not worth feeding and were either too big or too strong in the body for serious ground work.On the other side i have seen and owned some very good diging bullxrussell of various %,the dog in my avatar was 1/4 bull and he had some serious diging over him before he finially died at the ripe old age of 17.A lot of lads bred that particilar x just for the sake of it without dooing any homework on eit

Never had a problem with dogs geting sick while travelling.I live in a small houseing estate with a green at front so when dogs are pups i just put them in the box and drive around the green and after a few times doing this i start bringing them on longer runs until eventually they will jump in themselves knowing they are geting out and about.I myself hate travelling in the back of a van especially if there is no windows,my stomach turns more so if there is a big GARDA sign on the side of the van, lol.

High And Low Points Of The Season
fat man replied to Pirate 9000's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
High points were i started a young bitch and dug her 12 times and she worked a treat everytime, low point was my mate lost a very good bitch on her 1st outing of the season,to anxious to get to her quarry and pushed up so tight she smothered but apart from that we had a very good season with a good over all tally, roll on next september. -
I agree RH,they are the gamest of the lot and put there life on the line everytime they go to ground as neither they noe the man above the ground can tell what the outcome will be even in the easiest of places,an earth can change so much in a season from being an easy place to becoming a complete nightmare, how many times have we entered a terrier in what we always believed to be an easy spot[puppy place] and it turns out completely different to any other time you dug before especially when it is a young dog you enter hoping for a quick easy dig.

A mate of mine had a yorkshire terrier years ago that was a complete lunatic in a stopend but would only do 5min to ground if it even done that but in saying that it did bolt a few fox and was a demon on rats.I have also seen lurchers on top do the buisness no prob but if they had to travel a few ft up a tube it soon changed there way of thinking.
-
I wish it was that easy RH. I hav a real rough coated westie here you can use wont charge too much for the service, few hundred and pick of the litter, now i think thats very fair and at least you know it will put a bit of fire into your line of dogs,we can call them highland fells and say its a totally new breed created by us,out and out fox slayers.

Why don't you tell the lads Fatman what you were told a while back when you were Deer stalking ? Or is it too distasteful ? This is second hand info that a mate told me a few wks back while stalking deer down the country. We were drining up the side of the mountain and passed an old cottage in the middle of nowhere.I said to my mate how could anybody live in such a remote place. He then told me it belonged to an english man and he had only died a couple of years back.I then asked did he die in the house and if so how was he found and it was then he told me that the man in question had comm

I reckon a share of the spoils for both teams,1-1 draw.

One of our best permissions has an old graveyard down the back and it has 3 earths in it and we always get good diging there, also a tomb smack in the middle of it,rich landlords from years ago,i said to my mate one day i bet there is plenty of poor irish working class people buried on the estate aswell but no markers for them.

Lol, last time anybody called me MR i was in court.
-
Hope you showed them lads how to drink, oops sorry i meant dig, lol.

Weve all done it by diging too early and dog is not with its quarry properly but ive seen it happen with dogs siting of there quarry,i like to hear a bit of rumbling before breakthrough as then you know the dog is with its quarry.

ldThats what i was saying, they thrash a fox and then some think they could do the same with badger, also very prone to loosing teeth with head on contact with fox.I can remember 1 man in particular[no names mentioned] that would never if possible let his dogs on fox,it can happen by accident that a fox will take refuge in a badger sett this happens but he never went out intentually to dig fox.Now as for yards that dont test,i meant pre-ban,i knew of plenty that would not let a terrier in with badger but as i said no names.

There's hyard and as you know there's stupid hard which are of little use in any mans yard,no point in fedding a dog for 12 months to only get a couple of digs through the season if your lucky.I have terriers here that can be dug to most wks even though they are mute or as near to mute as you will get, might sound a little while geting to there game but then it stops, but they dont try to kill whats in front of them, happy to take hold and lay there with it.My older bitch is different, she tries her best to go through quarry and is never happy with the back end of the quarry.I remember diging to y

I cant understand lads who ever they may be culling hardish type terriers.Imo if you keep breeding from sounders in the long term your going to end up with nowt.People can say what they like but pre-ban to try and dig an educated animal with an out and out sounder would be pointless as every time you get within breaking through that animal will push your sounder and be gone where as a hardish type will not allow that to happen, jmo.

Had a springer spaniel a few years back that was showing good signs of making an exceptional rough shooting dog but then she staerted having fits. This happened 5-6 times and would last maybe 2minutes,just lying there kicking and shaking.I took her to the vets but he said it could have been a number of things including a inherity disease.I decided i would run her on for another while and it was then that i noticed that it was only when she got excited or hyped up that it happened, for example if she was close on a pheasant or rabbit she would flush the game and then it started.I never seen her h

Ive a couple of different farms that hold very good earths, every time we hit them its usually 3-4 digs and all within 10 minute drive.I find the key to geting good diging is releasing game and making sure the backfill is properly done.We got a lot of digging thois season with limited traveling unless it was an invite from someone else.Where im living now im here 27-28 years and have seen a lot of young lads take up the digging and just as quick move on to something different which is a good thing from my side of things as i have seen very good earths ruined by these same lads, respect the land

Last couple of pigs i reared i was told by the local butcher to kill them out at around 14 stone as after that they get too fatty,as said some difference in free range and what you get in the supermarket.I fed mine on bags of fruit and veg i got for free local and then also bags of meal and they tasted lovely.

Walked a bit of new land this afternoon and found 2 nice earths with plenty of activity about them, also seen a vixen carrying a rabbit into some cover and on investagation found the earth with loads of sign of cubs, litter scattered everywhere, something to look forward to next season.

That;s like the time I asked a woman if she wanted to go dogging next Sunday. I even suggested she bring her sister and her 20 year old daughter. She must have been an anti as she went mad and called me a perv. Her loss though as I caught two foxes with my dogs. They must have been very tame foxs as the other day 1 fox was challenging your 2 dogs to a good old flare up lol.

She be just right come september, dont be in a rush with her, very easy to get then going, even easier to spoil them.
