have you tried working her energy up through the use of a tug item, a dog will respond to energy far quicker than treats ,a dog hooked on tug play will become an easily managed mutt,,and if you can get her to play tug in or around the fowl that problem will sort itself out too,,if you can follow this thinking When the dog gets charged up by the sight of the fowl,,she needs to get rid of that energy from her system,to get back to calm again,at the minute she does this by chasing and bothering the fowl,,,now if you can give her another avenue to release that energy into ,the tug toy for instan

Casso replied to dai dogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
nice bitch . what percentage of wheaton is in her ??? nice 1 mate, she is 1/4 wheaten 1/8 bull and 5/8 greyhound one of the best developed wheaten crosses iv seen, if she works as good as she looks then your a very lucky man! one of the finest looking animals on here in a long time,, -
really looking forward to the game next week now, two sides in good shape, Wales the real form team at the minute, and an Irish side who seemed to have ironed out a lot of selection problems and with no major injury worries,, Kidney might try to turn it into a dogfight, using Munster siege tactics ,in which case it may not be pretty to watch,i just hope its a good one,

pup problems hunting alone with her
Casso replied to coney clucky's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
if she has always been in the company of the other dog, a pack has been formed in her mind ,which may or may not include you, im not sure it does from what you've written, only you will know that , but if she equates hunting and been in drive with that other mutt around, to her something is missing ,it must be unsettling her,, work her on her own, take her out for an odd walk without the other dog,,the focus the older dog brings when lamping, could be the trigger she needs to tune herself in ,dogs read each others mindset, like us reading a book develop an understanding through ,positive int -
help with dog runing off when off the lead
Casso replied to woppy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
play, play and, play more ,forget bout training as such ,should be seen as play anyway,,,,no distraction at home,so no issues ,every mutt is on his best behavior at home,, -
another very important point,,,Dont play with the dog in the house, EVER,,dogs make associations with their surroundings and if he sees the home as a play area, its hard keeping him calm thereafter bud,, inside / calm, outside/ play, keep it like that and life becomes easier with the mutt,,,

not a very nice habit Pat,,if i could take it back to the drive thing, distorted behaviors come about because drive is not been expressed normally, simple as that, drive in a dog, broken down into parts involve ,searching, scenting, stalking, chasing ,pouncing, barking, pulling ,tearing or any number of other physical manifestations of canine behavior,,because one or some must come out in some form,, a working dog gets to chase catch and kill on a regular basis,it is also very predator like,,on the flip side of the coin, take away the predator mindset and no outlet to express that drive

a lurcher never needs to be shown how to chase and catch, because its already in there, but she sounds like she needs her confidence built up, she feels more prey than predator at the minute, the more predator she feels the more interest she'll shows in things, and at the same token the less flighty she will become its like a scales, when one aspect of her personalty goes up, the other side decreases accordingly, i would definitely work on giving her a focus for her energy, the reason i say this is, because her drive will be coming through and because of her slightly distorted view on

his recall is crap because before he didn't have distractions that he does now, his recall has got to link into his drive somehow , the dogs drive is his strongest pull, simple as that ,nothing is stronger,,,and thats the pull your up against try feeding 2 hounds this year at Clonmell ,when the hare has came through the channel and into sight,,impossible i would think,,treats are not in the same league his drive is pulling away from you,,because he dont equate you with him been in drive,, a dog playing with a ball can be in drive,a dog playing tug can be in drive,, lose treats think play i

you need to make yourself more interesting to the pup, make her want to be with you from the inside out, calling her in cases like that dont make a jot of difference, because your voice is not stimulating anything inside her, its got to come from her, if its a fearful pup, i would practice bite work with a tug toy, if you get her to bite and tug ,you will create a bond based on drive and drive is harmony with its surroundings to a dog, it will also go a long way to getting the fear out,, dont tell her off for making contact with you of any sort, sensitive dogs are more prey like than pr

let the pup settle, house training i can understand but let him feel his way round things, dont fry his nervous system by constant stimulation, try being an observer of him ,study his actions and behavior, let him turn to you for gentle stimulation,,,play is the best thing for him, dont tell him off for mouthing just redirect to some item you can have interaction with , there is a lot written on how to bring up pet dogs ,which do not work with what we expect from working dogs ,,play with items then let the pup win,,it will make him fell great ,it will feel great to play with you, it will also

he would be better off showing the mutt what to do with its energy rather than coming into conflict with it, the mutt is only holding energy back in cases like this, the mutt will still see conflict as a way of resolving its energy because the f**king owners dont do anything with it, channel the mutts energy into positive interaction and you wouldn't have that problem, every mutt on this earth needs to ground its energy, through hunting, tugging ,play fetch, whatever it is,, its just energy coming out,its not a bad dog, its bad owners,

its the instinct in the dog that makes him follow up scent, and search for motion and chase, its his drive which dictates how far and how fast he will chase and with what sort of intensity he brings to the job,,

Bull x won't chase rabbits in the daytime.
Casso replied to shushyjukal's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
give her a trigger sound, a word ,a phrase,a hissing sound that stimulates movement, use it on the lamp, maybe use it when you throw a ball for her , it will work once an association is made within the dog, -
How do Mastiff hybrids compare to other guard dog breeds? Well to be honest, there is no comparison whatsoever!! I regularly hear people commenting-why would you want a cross breed, when there are German Shepard dogs and Rottweilers that are more commonly available? Only a person that clearly knows nothing of mastiffs (or guard dogs in general) would make such a comment, for these types are compiled from animals of fighting origin, and are capable of overpowering the aforementioned breeds with ease, and therefore make for better dogs in the event of fighting off an int

be interesting to see how they turn out,,with the trigger happy style of the mal crossed with weight and power of the presta ,could be a whole bunch of hassle for the untrained handler,,

dont worry about taking the item off her for the time being, you must ask yourself what you hope to achieve with the rag on a string, is it to stimulate the chase in her,is it to promote the retrieve, or just to have some interaction with the pup, i wouldn't be too bothered what any pup does at that age, its irrelevant to what will come in the future, but trying to take the her prize off her every time will go against her instincts, let her catch her item , which will make her feel good, and if she doesn't bring it or holds on to it, ignore her ,let her carry it around with her, if shes c

what marks out of ten would you give yourself
Casso replied to martync1967's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
thats a very valid point with dogs , if you can form a bond in a way that makes the dog believe that anything you want ,he wants, its not training as such ,its more of a understanding between you,,
