  1. never,,why would you add something that isnt bred to catch,,
  2. Maybe the bunny had fallen on hard times, and just had had enough, playing tug and chasing ball will increase the bond with you and the mutt,,when hes retrieving a ball ,use the same phrase "bring it" or similar every time,,once he knows it 100% everytime different areas , try it when he has a bunny ,he'll know then for sure what you want, make him retrieve it before moving anywhere,,it could take some time,,
  3. The sweet sound of innocence,,like a breath of fresh air on here, i wouldn't hang about in this den of serpents too long, miss, you only end up getting hooked, and probably end up buying a bull cross or something similar,, as for the original questions,,dont know,,
  4. Maybe youve bumped into a strain of rabbit ,who are fighting back, evolution is a on going process ,maybe we'll all need a bull cross to deal with bunnies in the future,
  5. Bud its so hard to diagnose problems between dog and owner from a few words put down on a site like this, in my humble experience most problems evolve from dog/owner interaction, especially emotional driven situations, that is ,what a dog comprehends from any situation and what you comprehend may be totally different, Discipline is a huge one ,not saying its the case with you,,but when a dog is excited and doing something ,usually stems from drive or some form of it, and we let out a few f**ks at it,,is he precieving that he shouldn't do it ,he shouldn't do it with us there ,or that he can
  6. Confidence is something you can build with the pup, socialize but dont overwhelm, no point taking 1 step forward and 2 back ,try to read the pups behavior, watch the body language it will inform you whats going on inside, in situations where it may cause long term effects , crazy kids ,dogs ,keep it nice and easy ,short and sweet, plenty of one on one play with you even when out if you can fit it in ,get loads of eye contact when she wants something from you,,,jolly her along when she out, praise ,encouragement when shes doing well ,it'll fall into place for ya if you try seeing the world fro
  7. Of course they cant mate of course they cant ye keep telling yourself that Always puzzles me where all these tested bedlingtons are that they put across greyhounds at least with a collie cross they do excel at certain jobs edible game etc but a bedlington cross feck me there just plain average at best infact they have possibly as a whole gotta be the most average mediocre cross out of the lot Maybe you just havn't seen the right ones bud,,seen them on allsorts of quarry, seen a first cross beddy bitch draw anything ,faster than a wheaton ,she pinned an 8 pointer one night til the cavalry
  8. you know as well as i do whin that orgainised coursing events are about speed and money not wind and ability , and are not a reflection of what hounds were capable of 100 years ago,,i would debate that the hounds on these isles 100 or so years ago before money became the prize not the catching of quarry were more than able to stay, with greater wind than the bulked up sprinter of a hound bred today,,its one of the last remaining aspects of rural life still alive and thriving on this isle and long may it last,,
  9. you havn't given him much time to bed in with you,,does he come back at all on the lamp,,or come near and run off again,,or does he just get the head down as soon as he gets off,, it a bit of everything you you have mentioned and can be a bit nervous at time, i will have to work on bonding with him and gain his trust, the misses will not be happy sleep on the couch. what worked for us before with a mutt that was slow in returning ,was get it mad for ball play and if it missed a bunny, knock off the lamp , if it came anywhere near, it knew we had the ball, you launch the f**king ball
  10. you havn't given him much time to bed in with you,,does he come back at all on the lamp,,or come near and run off again,,or does he just get the head down as soon as he gets off,,
  11. just a question bud dont take offence, is that whippet out of working stock, and is there any history of hip problems in the sire or dam,,thanks,
  12. Maybe its the bull generation but some folk think nothing could ever kill a fox before the bull came popular,,plenty of terrier crosses around long before that , and some deerhounds are demons on fox , Had a wee beddy cross bitch well able to draw ,anything, as good as any,she probably didn't look the part but then again that didn't seem to be important to anyone back then,, as the man said , this thread said more about the amount of lurcher work some lads have done or seen,
  13. i dont understand why it just have to be bull collie or saluki,,a lot of the best runners have bits of allsorts thrown in there,,and the best ones usually have the best qualities of a lot of breeds,, bulls do have a lot to offer in terms of drive and a lot of lads are drawn towards that trait in a dog and maybe as a reflection of how they see themselves or how they would like to be ,however they may not agree with that statement ,if their honest with themselves ,thats where it stems from ,, it would be interesting to see the breakdown of various breeds and their owners on here and what are
  14. i wouldn't keep a whippet again,,just a bit lightweight for the situations i seem to find myself in when im out,,i know a lot of lads swear by them ,and i apologize if anyone gets offended by my comments, but not for me,,
  15. bud if you've seen them work or know their good dogs ,fire away,,
  16. worker x worker everytime,,used to get hung up on bits of this and bits of that,,but a lot is just theory and doesn't always follow through, lurcher x lurcher from proven stock you wont go to far wrong,,
  17. started every pup on its own,,dogs dont learn the same way we do ,we can be shown something and learn from it,but there are so many other senses working in a dog you dont know what he picking up from any experience, one thing he will be picking up is ,the excitement from the other dog and excitement is not what i want from him, i want him chilled out and focused on me not another mutt, you dog will learn quickest from his own experiences, and learn at blinding speed when in drive,, what im saying most of all is that i want to control as much of the situation as possible, and with other bodies
  18. im not sure offering prize money in the fair for these events is correct in a situation where people see the day, as a fun day out ,bit of craic ,and a chance to meet up with old faces from other areas,,in my opinion your only asking for trouble,,
  19. And hedgehog, and badger Then there is the one who eats sheep poo, to vomit it back up IN THE HOUSE i think spewing up shite in the kitchen would tip her indoors over the edge completely,,
  20. anyone else got dogs with the ability to find a f**king 3inch long fresh fox shite in a 20 acre field, not only find it but wear the f**king thing home with them, terrier here who hates flies, but cant seem to make the link between the fox shite necklace and the 3 dozen flies trying to eat her,,rant over
  21. i would think if she brought the first few back to hand when you first got her ,that now that she been there a while and she's stopped ,looks to me like its your relationship with her that has caused it , either your lamping with a buddy and his mutt as well or she hasn't made a connection with you in her mind, plenty of one on one contact, ball play, tug, anything that get her tail up and smiling, ,dont tell her off for making any form of contact that includes jumping up, play , hand feeding helps as well ,if you can stomach it,,basically anything which causes a favorable reaction from her ,,b
  22. The main problem with a high drive dog is that if he doesn't see you as part of his drive process , he sees you as getting in the way of his inbred instincts,,a high drive dog has such a pull to his quarry ,such an attraction its almost magnetic,,and your calling and f ing him out of it cant possibly get a response, he doesn't see you as part of his hunting group, there is no group mind between you 2, he is probably a terrific dog apart from this, but once he gets charged either through scent or sight , you dont exist,,because he feels 100,000 volts of prey energy coursing through his body ,
