Given the distance and variation between tribes, it is not reasonable to speak of "Native American Culture" as a single, consistent entity. There is historical evidence of some tribes considering the wolf to be a competitor, to be killed in order to preserve sometimes scarce resources. Let's not romanticise either wolves or hunter-gatherer lifestyles, either. Most canines will scavenge if the opportunity presents itself, and most hunter-gatherers experienced periods of shortage as well as periods of plenty. Inclement weather was just as common then as now, and they were far less well-equip

thats awful bud, sorry to hear that, she would have wanted ya to get out in those fields again , they're all just here for a short time, best of luck,,

interesting reading there sandy, thanks for that,,and hunting is the link between man and wolf, sport is such a recent term the concept of which has a completely different meaning, a lot of which is to do with competition, hunting for me has almost a primal aspect to it, i cant explain the attraction in words instinctual you could say and its the same in the dog, is it a basic need in mankind like it seems to be in the dog, society today allows humans to express certain primitive traits through sport and other activities, and as humans have become urbanized get further away from their natur

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/13/science/science-faith-and-politics-clash-over-wolves-in-wisconsin.html?_r=2&ref=science found this ,thought it was interesting how the wolf was viewed by the native American, a symbiotic relationship in it's true form

thats a smart looking bitch with the white blaze on her front, like her very much,,

the problem with any of this is that we're all coming at it from different angles, Coming from a hunting point of view, i know my dog doesn't hunt with eating in mind, food as such is not his intention, he just wants to hunt , because he is driven to do it,, when you take the food issue out of it, which i believe there was plenty for everyone, the only thing left is the hunt i just cant believe the wolf was attracted to man just to eat his shite,,

is the dog in the house bud?? it is casso, do you think that makes a difference? has the dog been overly stimulated and played with regular in the house,,? the reason i ask this is because dogs make associations with states of mind and certain environments, for example a dog who's used to hunting and free running makes the association between going into fields and playing and running, now if you one day in the field put a lead on him and confine him , it wont be long before he starts the let you know all about it by whining and generally feeling distressed, its the same with your pu

That's open to challenge.... Man developed techniques that permitted him to kill game that was too large for your average canine to hunt succesfully, and in numbers. Think of the hunting strategy of some canines, whereby some pack members "herd" (it's the same instinct that we exploit in our stock-herding dogs) prey into an ambush by other pack members. Humans may not have the speed and stamina of canines, but their tools, weapons, pits and snares enable them to kill larger game with less risk. How did canines learn to herd prey to humans as they would to stronger pack-members? That's

is the dog in the house bud??

not sure bout ill effects bud, but canine's use chewing and ingestion as a tension release ,,

picking up can be difficult for dogs who keep themselves back like a slow starter, sometimes its a confidence thing, for the pick up a dog has to really put himself out there, some dogs who have been confronted for mouthing as pups can be a bit hesitant to mouth other things, Build up his confidence with you , get him playing with a tennis ball or similar item, plenty of work will cure it as he matures anyway best of luck with him,

why does dogs eat their own shit ???Casso replied to rocky1's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk dogs relieve internal tension through oral ingestion, internal tension can be cause by internal parasites or its own external environment, so i would also be looking more closely at the pups environment , it can also be the canine equivalent of nail biting,

why does dogs eat their own shit ???Casso replied to rocky1's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk A dog is driven to ingest , he can satisfy the need to ingest by just using his nose, they do it all the time , but when they come across a prey full essence in something they will taste it ,blood, body fluids, other animal shit and if its edible they will eat it , dogs usually dont get a charge out of their own,,what age is the pup,,?

it was just a emotional charge working its way out bud, it could be called a grudge but thats too personal, if she was the first dog to discipline him for being unruly or too excited with her in a charged moment and swiftly corrected him ,it would have left him with an emotional scar as such, and whatever goes in must come out, but only in another highly charged moment similar to the first, like a young dog spanked by a fox early in life , the charge left in the dog from the first encounter becomes internalized and will need another fox to bring it out again, and according to his temperamen

By making everything boring and not having a routine - for the first few days they go no where (except the garden) the house is always calm and relaxed anyway, there taught that in the house they have to relax - they can chew the toys and bones that are around but that's it, i don't massage them as such, but do use heavy long strokes, the first command they learn is enough. When they go out that's where they find the fun is - but again that's controlled and if they get over the top - games are stopped and we go back to being boring again, they learn that I'm in control of things It

It IS a theory because we know that genetics just doesnt work in a robotic fashion...we know this in human life and animal.......the idea within breeding over many generations is to produce a dog who on the average of what his line has to offer is of the highest possible quality......that doesnt mean theres not going to be some very high quality individuals as well as some very low quality individuals, hence the importance on breeding selection...........those dogs of very low quality could be low quality in any area be it physical or mental...........this romantic theory we all love to have of
-
its not a theory its out there for everyone to see, but we just dont look for it, blan as you said yourself animals are a product of genes and environment, the drive in the genes is too make contact with something ,we then create the environment for the dog to express his drive energy in what will become a natural process for the dog when channeled , we have highly driven dogs at work in society controlled by nothing more than a bouncy ball kept by its handler, or access to piece of fabric worn on an arm , so how does that work??
-
playing with the dog brings its energy to the fore and get it moving, static energy in a dog needs a trigger to bring it out, thats what i use play for, tug on its own as we know it is not the ultimate goal, the aim is to get drive flowing and as we know a dog learns quicker in drive than any other state of mind, so when we have a dog hooked on tugging we use that as a handle to control and train the dog while the dog is in drive and hanging on our every word , meaning most times a running dog is in drive he is running away from us, its about the dog been in a heightened state of drive

build up the trust again, hand feed some of her feed, get her coming into your space, get her making contact with you ie jumping up for a treat, no corrections try managing bad behavior, avoid electric fences like the plague bud,, the only positive out of this is, you can build trust again, but if she thinks its the wire, you may not get her into a field with wire round it ever again and is an all together higher mountain to climb, best of luck with her,

i would also try to make the home an attention vacuum, so no attention given to either of them in the house, a house is a very tension filled environment for a dog at the best of times, and with the two of them now with a history of charged emotional encounters between them, too many emotional situations in the house can just be adding more tension on top of something which already has shaky foundations , i would defo get that staffie out and working on a tug item, it helps to show a dog what to do with it energy, its get the energy flowing back and forth between you and him, at the moment t
-
would be interested to know how much they get out , what i mean is out doing doggy stuff, if you leave dogs living in tension and not out releasing energy, fighting can become the ultimate release for a dog, tension builds up, a row starts usually involving a heightening of energy, and what happens is the fighting itself leaves a tension in the dog which can then only be resolved through fighting thereafter,, a wolf pack live in tension which is resolved through the hunt, i would do some tug work with them on their own , to just distress them, especially the staffie, teaching each to bark on

Drive in a dog any dog is a drive to make contact , be it with a sleeve, a bird, a rabbit , a dog or a hog, dogs are of course bred with certain attributes which specifically are in keeping with the temperament of the animal, sight hounds are very sight oriented so they are largely sensitive to movement of the small furry type and since they can be switched on in drive so easily they can be also switched off with relative ease in comparison to other breeds, but we all know cases where young running dogs have to be encouraged to chase, a lot of lads start a young dog with a more exper

that point is very interesting because if you can have that sort of an understanding with a wild feline then the possibilities of a understanding developing between a wild canine and man must be 10 fold, what i mean is canines are must more trusting on a basic level, when is the last time you tried to give a moggy a tummy rub without the cat breaking down into a instinctual grab hold and bite situation, canine are much more intuitive of mans honest intentions, man and canine grew together through a mutual desire to hunt, each understanding the others intentions on a very basic level,, pr
