    ???

not having a go at ya here Moll, i dont know what you do with yer dogs or how hard you work them but,,a lean dog facing into 2,3 or 4 nights hard lamping is going to really struggle by the end , 20 /30 bunnies a night in a good area ,we use to go away a couple of times a year and hunt night and day, , there is not enough time for the dog to replace the weight back that he burns every night , you can stuff as many calories into him after the end of each night but by the end of the week he's not going to look in good condition , hes going to look poor, because he body is working so hard to rep

to be honest i dont mind the dog carrying a bit of weight coming into the working season, as long as hes not a totally unfit lard bucket , the weight will drop off a hard worked dog after a couple or 3 nights lamping in a row,,id rather have a bit in hand on the dog ,a bit to lose as such,,
  3. nice pup, as the birdy man says bond with the pup, through play, physical contact ,give him something to bite on , not on your arms,,through play a bond is formed, and when your dog is on the same wave length as you, he wants what you want, , marking setts will just happen ,if he's reading you ,and you him, it just develops if you encourage him ,,training falls into place if there is trust, patience and understanding, a group mind is formed between the 2 involved,a partnership ,if you try that approach you wont go to far wrong,,training should be just an activity to two of you enjoy,, only a

There are very few members that i'll read their posts on any thread with interest,,great pics and sound advice always ,,have a good one,,
  5. the pups lack of adventure in these cases are just expressing what she feels inside, as the man said shes still a pup , but the only thing that will change between now and maturity,is that her drive kicks in ,which forces her to overcome the negative way shes looking at things,,but she may still have a slight nervous tint to her, you are the biggest influence in her life , you can build her confidence through simple positive interaction ,,her experiences with you shape the way she looks at life, same way our experiences with our parents effect us,,,lots of physical contact no matter what fo
  6. a lot of dogs respond differently with live game in their mouth for the first time,,hope it goes well for ya when the time comes, dont take anything for granted ,,but sounds good so far,,some mutts wont even look at game unless there is some sort of heart beat in there,,
  7. not a date really, often hunted before it but in olden days as soon as the the first frost strikes is was game on ,
  8. if it works and it suits, thats all that matter Shazza,,all the best
  9. dont know about potential probs, but i like the slight edge you get with a hungry pup when training, i believe that alot of traits piggyback on the hunger feeling, more willing to work, more attentive, more responsive, its a void in the dog that needs filling and the dog will work harder to fill it , i dont mean training through treats,it leaves a vacuum is his behaviour which will bring his personalility to the fore , a fed dog is a contented mutt, and i found a little less keen, takes my take on it bud,,if your happy enough with the way things are ,carry on ,and more power to ya,,
  10. any pup kept in the house i always crate them ,much easier to manage, house train, keep out of trouble , take them out let them take a piss , treat them , easy,,any pup will make an association with its surrounds and taking a leak or a crap, the smell of the grass ,the feel of it under its feet ,,but on the other hand if it associates carpet or a tiled floor with the place to go , thats where it will go,, thats why the newspaper thing works so well , the smell and feel of the newspaper can be moved around because its the smell and feel that triggers its association with pissing,,
  11. where'd ya pick her up bud,,?

  16. beg your pardon skycat, just spotted your also add on,,you've got it covered,,nice one
  17. i think just about everything's been covered on this thread,,for getting a pup going on the lead, but as you just got the pup and its only 8 weeks old ,i would just let it settle for a while ,build up trust and let it believe that the sun shines out of your rear end, before causing it any more stress, the pup is forming so many associations with everything at the min and you need to be seen as the good guy,, its been proved that a trusting pup unafraid of humans will walk on a collar and lead without much coaxing ,,because of how it has been socialized with care, Top advice on this thread b

  20. what county you in scent waterford pal took a bit of a knock recently,,but ye will get through it, will be interesting to see how it pans out this year,.Galway hurled as good as any against Cork,,
  21. its funny when i struggled to hunt years ago with no motor, trying to get a lift, shite lamp and battery that weighed as much as the dog, i lived for hunting, hated the summer, really looked forward to those cold windy nights of winter,, now its different, hunting on my doorstep, family , widowed, resposabilities ,its not my number 1 any more, life has a way of putting things in order,, still love the thrill of the chase , but feel the cold of winter now, summer is very much welcomed, walk/mooch them year round though, i think sometimes ive hunted myself out, overdosed ,dont need to prove mys
  22. if i could just follow on from that post Tyla, i dont want to pry into your private life, but could the dog be omitting emotions gathered from you,ie protective of your wife which is a natural t hing and or does your wife have fears over the situation with the dogs and the behaviour shown, in some cases the behaviour can become self fulfilling in its self,,thanks,
  23. i believe theres more to this debate than controlling dogs its how we see dogs, dogs are completely social by nature, if we expect dogs to act a certain way we will see that behaviour in our dogs actions ,likewise if you believe a dog is truly social you wont see dominance but active and reactive,is a dog acting dominant( active ) or reactive(submissive) , and like humans some of us are more dominant or submissive by nature, does that mean we're tying to control or take over anything ,by expressing ourselves a certain way in keeping with our personality, on another point, some the most ser
  24. i havent been a big fan of the dominance thinking for a while now, David Mech who first coined the phrase Alpha male and female back in the day,has through further research named the couple the breeding pair, dogs, can pick up on our excitement and fear, and they can through their behaviour express our emotions, i would be interested in who owns which dogs ,same person ,two persons2 dogs each?and how do these people feel about the mutts? ,and changes if any, may not even be dog related have gone on in the home, could the dog be expressing stress,?? i know, a lot of folk, wont agree with t
