  1. I only keep collie based, cur dogs,..and they can run just fast enough,.. to keep themselves warm,.. However,..most successful racing and coursing lads that I have met over the years,..all seem to exercise, feed and condition their charges, in an individual manner...They tell me,..that like human athletes,..we are all different and some of their best dogs require a personal feeding regime... As for raw feeding,...well,..I remember my Father and most of the local shepherding guys, feeding their fox packs, terriers/lurchers, etc,..on raw meaty bones, tripes, porridge, fallen stock,.you
  2. Swimming is great exercise for the work dogs,...especially during the Summer months when the ground is baked rock hard..The dogs can realy use their muscles to the fullest effect,.. without the risk of jarring/damaging injury..
  3. Hunting quarry under the spotlight's glare is great fun,.it is also productive,...but in truth, it sure ain't' Rocket Science....
  4. Familiarity, not fear,... is usually the solution...
  5. The genuine first cross twixt a pure whippet and a Collie can be a disaster... It is imperative to use real good stock to produce what I would term ,..a starting point... As a young man, I was told that the ideal hybrids for ferreting, were Whippet Collies or Whippet Bedlingtons...Alas,..I have not found this to be a definitive statement,..in fact,..such a hybridization need to be carefully considered....However,..if the initial prototype shows promise and exhibits the best of both worlds ; the lightening fast reflexes of the whippet, combined with the tractability and sagacious demea
  6. This is the type of lurcher hybrid that I favour today,...I call them an 'auld man's lurcher'.. For ferreting/mouching,..this style of hunting dog,... is just about perfect....
  7. Thems some frightening statistics,..quite an in depth analysis.... Feck knows how I have ever made any vonga from the wasps, over the last 30 years....
  8. Temperament, Temperament,..Temperament...
  9. Ran a trio, of lean and mean, Dog ferrets for years,...they were terrific.
  10. Spewed, Jacked,...I ain't keen on such emotive terms,...facts are, 'anyone and anything' can be made to quit.... Lots of variables come into play,...nothing is completely straightforward....Obviously,..some critters, both animal and human,..just ain't cut out to be hunters,...they do not have it in them.
  11. For an older dog ,unused to the dazzler, it is like entering a whole new world...
  12. Photos and images can often be deceptive,...
  13. As a rule,..pest control applications are not exactly rocket science,...it is customer relations and one's personality and behaviour towards the customer, that helps to preserve longevity in the business...
  14. I've not had many pups that were poor eaters (folk tell me dogs get like their owners )..but,..I have found that a wee bit of cooked liver, or a sprinkling of grated cheese on a bowl of scran, will usually get a reluctant jukel, back into his feeding regime...
  15. This is going to be a good year for wasps...
  16. Some ferrets are born to the job,...even as babes they will go in for the kill,.effect a hold and hang on for dear life... Mind you, a powerful adult buck, will invariably pull them along the tunnel and usually break free,..but the best of tyro workers will just 'keep on coming'...nothing will stop his natural aggression... However,...with an average kind of young ferret, I have found it best to wait, until they can handle themselves and have a bit of power in the jaws and a good bodyweight to back it all up... Some ferrets can be turned into quitters if they get an early hammering amid
  17. Good points there Magic Mike.... Whilst I am no nutritionist,...I have in the past,..worked two teams of ferrets on a daily basis... This is where the feeding and general conditioning of a working animal is put to the test . To work a full shift,.especially in deep chalk,...a ferret has to be in tip-top condition , both physically and mentally... There is no substitute for a hunting critter, dog or ferret , that realy wants to do the business, but in order to achieve this goal,..he must be in superb yarak,...and in my opinion,.good food is paramount....
  18. To a genuine appraiser of working dogs,...scars are invisible....
  19. Good luck to you fellah... You are now in the perfect position to succeed.. . When I first started,...my needs were small (still are).... I did all types of Pest Control,..literally, from 'Fleas to Foxes'... As the years passed by,...I started to specialise.... Stick in there, and take every penny you can,.and always keep in mind when it comes to contracts,..that 'Small is Beautiful'.... If you lose a large earner,.it can be a heartbreaker,..but a wee job is soon forgotten.... Keep on the move.... All the best , Phil.
  20. The Who,.my favourite group of all.... But,...there comes a time for all good huntin dawgs,... to call time....
  21. Nests coming in, thick and fast....I feel that it is gonna be a good year,...a very good year... Stay safe now lads....
