Specialist Stroke Ultimate Ferreting Dog
Phil Lloyd replied to Jamie m's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
He knows.... I'm glad some fecker does,,,,I've read the title ten times,,,and I'm fecked if I know what specialist stroke means...lol I had to think about it; having read it I decided it wasn't a reference to being touched up by a member of the medical profession while under anaesthetic. My simple mind would have responded better to Specialist/ultimate..... Then my simplistic approach is that any dog that has good manners , marks and is nimble enough to pin potential net-flippers without chewing them up is good enough. Different if you have wide-open country and forgo the use of nets -
It has taken the powers that be,...a fecking long time to listen to reason,....

I was brought up with the so called,..'heavily influenced Collie types".....long time ago Initialy as a nipper on our Hill Farm,.. then amidst the Hop Fields of Kent... I enjoyed having such a canny critter at heel...they were good old pals.... However,...as a contemporary lurcher type,..(unless you have access to the Elsyan Fields),.they are a wee bit,..... limited...
-
Well I like em,...they suit an undemanding oldie like me....

I've had my bulldog spade for over 40 years,...it has served me well... Just bequeathed it to a keen rabbiting enthusiast off this website... He is a genuine Goodfellah and deserves to own the best of tools, hopefully it will see him out
-
I would count myself fortunate ....if I were you... Local lurchermen, once had a similar problem,...but,.living amongst dozens of other lads,..all willing and eager to reduce the numbers of anything, that walked, crawled or swam,...their wee problem,.. pretty soon went away...
-
Where 1/2 cross and 3/4 bred lurchers are produced on masse,..the choice of Greyhound dam will often dictate the eventual outcome of a certain litter... Even when mated to Border Collies,Collie Greyhounds,Beardies and even Oz Heelers,..some grand old moms seem to produce a far better end result and consistency than others....
-
The style of rabbiting that you are doing will often dictate the calibre of lurcher that you need... I only have a quiet mouch about these days,...so I have bred the type of roustabout cur, that suits my general mind set,.. and advanced age .... An interesting thread..

Informative post Steve,,....coming right from the source... I am a massive fan of all the herding breeds and the composite lurcher types, created via them..

@ IanB.....feck that,...I ain't getting them all dirty,...them's me specials... Darren,...by all means protect your precious traps,..they sure ain't cheap ,.and it pays to look after your trapline... I did once wax, all my Conibears,..I even covered the dog/latch, etc, with some tape..but I still found them a wee bit slippy,..if ya get my drift ... Nowadays,..I rarely use traps (other than for moles)....but when I was working on the rabbits and squirrels,..I liked dunking the Fenns and Magnum 116's into a bucket of 'Speed Dip' or similar product.... Some lads don't favour this

Not always a good idea, waxing Body Grippers Darren...

If you keep on going to the same area,....you really are upping the odds of getting a pull.... It is difficult getting permission (that part of Hampshire is partridge shooting country)...and also has a large population of hares,...so,..running dogs over the fields at night, can split up the coveys,...and this is why Keepers are often out,..shooting foxes, etc... That being said,...if a man wants to have a wander,..it is favourite to park up,..out of the way,....and have a wee wait and see , before walking the land....Best to get into a good position and stand still for a while,..just

Preventing Poaching In The Uk
Phil Lloyd replied to CH-SUK's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
It is a trueism, that as long as we have game to take,..some fecker will be out there, taking it.... -
Unfortunately,...nowadays,where young running dogs are concerned..it is a buyer's market ,. certainly not a seller's Therefore,...many potential customers/good homes,.etc,...have the luxury of being able to pick and choose from a plethora of available litters....SO,.it is prudent to consider whether any future breeding project would be viable.

Yeah,..I don't keep any ferrets at home these days,.... I've always believed,.. that when ya do get a good dog ferret,.. my God, they are good...

Borrowed a young Dog ferret last weekend,.... His owner had a box full of similar types,...I asked him which one should I choose ? "Take anyone mate,..they all work".....he replied... I knew then, that I was in the company, of a genuine rabbiting man.... What a corker of a working animal,....its strength and vigour and amazing prey drive made my day... He gave me confidence,....he made the job so easy.... Maybe one day I will own such a useful creature,...it is a bit late for me ,...but ya never know...

Adaptability ,...and an ability to learn from one's mistakes, is what makes a successful hunter... In fact,..I have learn't far more from what I did not catch,.than what I did.....
-
I've walked out with a few... Purpose bred work dogs,..created for a reason,..bit of a waste getting one just for bushing....

House Lurchers, Work As Well As Any Kennel Cur,s
Phil Lloyd replied to swg dave's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I like to have my dogs around me whenever I can,...obviously not when they have just rolled in Badger Shit ! Dogs need their own space,...they need to have time on their own.... But,..keeping them in the manner of a pet/companion does not seem to affect their ability to hunt, catch (and if required), to kill... No set rules with lurchers
