  1. Hi,..it is good that you are trying to school your young lurcher... Surmounting barriers and getting over (or through) obstacles is just one part of a working dog's education,.but it is a discipline, well worth teaching...Some dogs are natural jumpers, they just love getting 'up and over',.but, alongside fetching and retrieving captured quarry, back to the operative,.. it is not always an inherent trait... Sometimes a dog needs a wee bit of help... I start them young,..in fact,..as soon as a whelp can stumble around, I create barriers that he must negotiate in order to get to me, or
  2. Loose lips, sinks ships,..always has done,..and unfortunately,..it always will...
  3. True words... Personaly,...It saddens me, looking at pictures of young lurchers, up for sale on the various selling sites.. The poor bemused critters look so fecking lost and forlorn You cannot tell men what to do, or how to lead their lives,.but in many cases, there is such a surplus of running dogs readily available, that it begs the question,.why keep breeding the feckers...? As stated,...the Saluki hybrids are prime candidates for getting moved on,..and as stated,...they, (alongside the more primitive of Collie curs)...are the types that are least suited, to be moved from pi
  4. Elysian Fields, what a fabulous, idyllic place to let a hunting dog,.. really do his thing....
  5. Gaz,..when that wee gal and the pup are full grown...you will have an album full of memories to look back on I used to take all my young sisters out,.. rabbiting, ratting, hare coursing,..you fecking name it,... We sometimes look at the old photos,...what a laugh,.... I am hearing reports of myxy from lads all around the UK,...lets hope the plague burns itself out, ASAP...
  6. Raw, green Tripes (or Sheep paunches) form a useful addition to the diet of a working dog. I used to obtain them in bulk, and fed the juicy Gems alongside copious amounts of carcase meat, bones,...etc, etc.. Yes, Tripes do smell a wee bit,.but the odour is nothing,.. compared to chicken carcases that have got a tad warm. There is much talk about the benefits of raw tripe,..of the probiotic effects, etc,..well,.I have no scientific knowledge ,.but I do know that most dogs,.once they have taken to gnawing on the stuff,..realy do seem to love em... I only manage to get a few whole t
  7. Getting a good, useable, lamping shot, is a real hit and miss affair.. I would applaud any night hunter who manages it Night hunting is an exciting pastime, it is like entering a whole new world,.. and to be a successful hunter,..both man and dog sometimes need to adapt their mindset. Walking with that cold wind in the face is addictive,...but,.. it is a great addiction.... All the best, Phil.
  8. Kelpies are definitely my favourite pastoral breed,... I am constantly tempted, to bring in a pure bred example,..but good sense (so far) has prevailed. So,.at the moment, I remain, a traditional collie cur enthusiast. That being said, it is good to know that a few genuine Kelpie hybrids are out there,..doing their thing... The future looks bright...
  9. Hi Pete,...yes I do remember our meeting,..it was great to chat ,..and yes, you certainly know your ground. I am suprised that the job has not been done ? If I recall,.the conversation and indeed,.the speculation, was centred upon actual mesh size,.best suited for hanking up the hares..Obviously,.very few teams can aford to keep keep a loft full of large mesh, 'hare nets',...it would not be a viable proposition,..especialy now that the organised hare coursing scene is lying dormant,..hoping against hope, to return some day ...so,..as you know, most long nets, stop nets , ditch nets,..(
  10. Hi BlackdogPete,...if you have observed guys doing the job,..you will know that the prime requisite for capturing hares,..live,..is in the positioning of the long nets (and you will up your odds by using several hundred yards of netting)...but a major requirement , as you would know, is in the boxing and careful handling of the captured animals... You also need to recruit enough help, (beaters) to encourage the hares to move forwards towards the hedgerows....Your nets will usually be placed behind them. Netting hares by day, is obviously a different procedure to taking them by night....
  11. Litter brother.... Either of you two ever breed off them? or did they wear out before the chance arose? Mine killed himself on a rabbit just short of his second birthday. Extreme prey drive, too much in my humble opinion, did not know when to ease up. And if that is the dog I am thinking of he done really well for himself, but if he was bred from I cannot tell you. TC Hi Tiercel,..as you know,.there is often a fair bit of variation in herding dog / running dog composites,..I have found that it takes a few hybridisations, before the pot stops boiling over,..and things fin
  12. Yes,.. I used Border Collie x Greyhounds, over my home bred ACD lurchers....
  13. In my opinion,...the Herding breeds are the most variable and primitive of all canines... They realy are,.different to other dogs,.so the actual best type to use in the creation of a lurcher, has to be chosen with great care. When they are good,.. they are very good,..but when they are bad..... You have to consider many things when using pastoral hybrids,..not least of all, temperament,...(the dog's mind set,..and of course, your own)....or it will definitely get, emotional...
  14. Spent decades hunting /ferreting/lamping,.. throughout the Summer months.. Had to show my face, or be replaced by another operative...it realy was the pits Mind you,..it was profitable and the wages from the Contracts, paid the Mortgage,...but I always hated doing the job. Fecking overgrown warrens, rock hard ground, and hot humid conditions. Rabbiting in the heat of the July/August sun was not what I had been brought up to.... Nowadays,..I prefer quality over quantity,...the money is no longer an issue,..so I can afford to take my time,.find some nice places to have a mouch over,.
  15. Spot on that. I only do it once or twice a week. I enjoy it and the dogs enjoy it. That is a sensible attitude fellahs.... Obviously,..a running dog has to have a degree of physical fitness,..same as any athlete, human or canine...and for a performance dog, such as a racer or coursing hound,..well,..it is an essential attribute, if you want to compete at the highest level....However,...I don't think intensive road work and trotting alongside a bike is quite as important, for a roustabout moucher's dog.. My mind harks back to the regular nights lamping...back in the 70s and 80s,.
  16. When the gold coin is concerned,..a marking dog is essential... On a paid job,.there might only be a handful of rabbits or rats to be culled.. It is imperative that you succeed,.or.... no result,.... no vonga. I rate the attribute of marking up in a work dog,...extremely highly,...
  17. Dogs destined for the rabbiting life, are best introduced to their trade,...as early... as possible...
  18. Nice image of a beautiful, athletic canine Trigger,...would like to see him some day... I started lamping,..many years ago,...how I wish that I had retained some memories of honest dogs, long gone....too fecking late now... Hope you have a good season... Regards, Phil.
  19. Very true Max Abell... I've hunted rabbits in most counties throughout the UK ...really enjoyed it.. However,.we always knew, that sooner or later, we would kill the goose, that laid the golden egg. Taken some large quantities in the Far North of Scotland,...hunting over terrain that was best described as being, a rabbit paradise...But,...even today,..when I catch 40 or so rabbits,..I often start to think,.maybe,...enough is enough... Time moves on,.nothing remains the same,.but still enough shushis around,.to see me out
