  1. Goodonya Tomo,...been on the wire once myself,...still got the scars.... I have found in this life, that it is best to do at least one good deed, per year,...and that was your one... All the best, and I am 100% sure,.. that you will have a safe and a happy Xmas..
  2. Understand the logic with the 'slip lead' business,.and if someone was beating through a small wood, for the deer,..well yes, it would certainly be beneficial to hold the dog back and wait for the break...(fecking exciting )....but, I only hunt the rabbits nowadays and I find it best to let the dogs do their thing,..' free as a bird'...and as you so rightly say,..they soon learn to watch each other's body language and rush to join in the action. If I had to hold a working style lurcher on a slip lead,..the prey would be up and running, long before I flicked the switch,.. But, that
  3. For me,..this is what true 'lurcher work' is all about.... I like to let the dogs, 'see the rabbit, roe',.whatever,.and then act accordingly... Slip leads are required when walking the stubble's and matching running dogs, against the hares,.but, for roustabout, bush busters and hunting type curs....freedom is the bye-word,...and if ya ain't gonna use a lurcher, like a lurcher,.then why fecking bother... All the best, and good hunting,.regards, CHALKWARREN...
  4. True words fellah... Nowadays,..(unless it is a paid day)..I just want the 'quality' and feck the quantity... At over 60 of age,...suddenly, life seems too short, to worry about having a poor day, coz now, every day,.. is a bonus.... All the best, and good hunting,..CHALKWARREN...
  5. Locally,.. the pheasants are making between 20p and 40p (straight from the Shoot) so, for a while at least..I am feeding 'whole carcase' to the dogs 'n ferrets Also taking the breasts out, for large, jumbo sized,.Jalfrezi, Bhuna, Korma and obviously,..Vinderloos... Facts are, they are cheap as chips and far more economical, than buying in, chicken breasts,...
  6. The Salukis and their hybrid cousins, have always seemed to baffle,.. the easily baffled..
  7. That is strange Brimmer...? I also stretch/pull a rabbit in certain situations,.but rarely see any damage or bruising to the neck/shoulder area...? Some lads, use far to much power to dispatch a wee mammal....they seem to literally stretch the neck,.almost away from its body,...whereas the correct way is to 'slide' the neck vertebrae, away from its joint,... I think you Northern lads are having more than two Weetabix for your breakfast,...you just don't know your own fecking strength
  8. You should be so lucky,.lucky , lucky ,.lucky...
  9. Don't have any thoughts on this practice,.other than,..try to learn how best to dispatch a rabbit,.it is not a hard skill to master,..and should always be undertaken with respect, and speed....I've taught scores of lads, how to neck or chin rabbits,..it is easy....
  10. I think 5 weeks is plenty early enough, to begin learning the ferreting game..
  11. @ Baw Personaly,..I like to get a pup out 'as soon as possible'.... Good old lurchers , eh...what would we do without em..
  12. Well, I'm not knowledgeable about quality horse flesh,.but, they looked like Stallions to me..
  13. I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows
  14. Seen them in Caithness once,...fecking awesome sight....
  15. Sensible post.... Folk get all worked up over such matters,..whereas the truth is,..unless you are talking high performance dogs,..which require a well thought out diet,..raw green tripe,.mixed with various other 'bits and pieces',. is a nice meal for a lurcher,.or a terrier.... The problem today, is in locating a regular supplier (Abattoir)...that will sell you sheep paunches and Beef Tripe's, at a reasonable price.. Years ago,..I used to purchase sheep's heads, cow udder, hearts, kidneys..etc,.etc,.dirt cheap,..but, for most lads, them days are long gone....The Pet food guys who su
  16. Bad news, but,.. as a lurcherman,..you know the score... Get the bitch fit again,...look to the future,...yesterday is gone,.....onward and upwards eh...
  17. Yeah,..I've noticed that you can be a mite frugal, with ya Jungle Juice...
  18. The whippets and their crossbred cousins, are fabulous at the ferreting game... I've had a fair few over the years,.and they were always great fun, to be out with... Their reflexes are second to none and I would always include a bit of whippet blood, in an other wise Collie/Greyhound mix.
