Deerhound X Greyhound Hares Preban
Phil Lloyd replied to blackgreyhound's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
As a youth in rural Wales,.I was brought up with Sheepdog/Curs,..mutts and sundry grass vergers,..and we caught, what we caught, by dint of carefully placed nets, snares, canny old jukels, and frequently foul and dirty deeds... THEN,.I came South and saw the Deerhound lurchers....and they were a revelation to me... For several decades these 'types' reigned supreme,..everybody I knew had one, and their rangy physique, and general demeanor, epitomised the traditional look of the lurcher.. Seen some real scrawny rawnies,.but also handled some fabulous specimens, that were chunky, power- 142 replies

Facts are,..if you want to insure 100% that nobody ever reads embarrassing PMs or back-biting , shit stirring, girlified stories and, kiss and tell tales,.then stick to the phone,.or better still,..have a quiet drink with a fellow hunter,...and say what is on your mind, face to face... This Internet business is a rum old thing... The best advice I have heard, was from my 1980s ferreting and gate netting partner,....Vito Corleone,...when he said to me,.."P,.you funny little fat fecker,...Don't tell everyone your business,...don't put up endless bloody images of dead critters,.....just treat strangers like mushrooms,.feed them manure and keep them 'in the fecking dark'.... Oh,..and always remember,.."Keep yer friends real close,.and yer enemies,..closer"....

Get what you are saying Keepitcovert,...and I also understand what Brookie is implying... Personaly,..having used a lot of lurchers, derived from pastoral/herding linage,...I would have to differentiate their actions, from those of a purpose bred, whizz-bang striker... If one of those lean and mean critters, starts to say no,no,no...then the hare killing game is over. However, it can also occur with the real collified, 'cur-like' types,...unfortunately they twig on to a lost cause, far quicker than most other lurcher hybrids.. That is just the way their mind set works... It is a

........@ FUJI.... Personaly,..I think that folk should try and understand that 'we are all different',..and have walked a different path...It might not have been of our choosing,.or in any way right and proper by today's standards,.but,..back then,..it was the only way.... Nowadays, I am legit,...I no longer have to freelance,.but,..my philosophy regarding the hunting game has not changed one iota,...and in short, when it comes to the chase,...... I want, what my dogs want from the hunt....and that is,..to catch the quarry,..whatever it might be... Simples realy...

Them Red Stags are big old things... I was on a Scottish Island, back in the day,.and I had two powerful lurchers with me,..one of them had accounted for a fair number of Roe, Sika and Fallow deer,..mostly prickets and Does, and usually after dark,.. We walked, right up onto the Red Stag. He rose to his full height,..out of a peat bog,.his antlers covered in moss and hanging debris,..looking like the creature from the Black Lagoon.. By feck,.he was a splendid critter,..and obviously not too bothered by the dogs. One of the lurchers, had taken an exceptional Roe the night b

We got no heating in our old house, so the lurcher dogs provide us with essential warmth More the fecking merrier I say...

Well said that man...

Abs o-feckin-lutey...!! Yeah,.over a period of years,..season after season.... Most of us have had lucky breaks, and captured some good strong deer; critters that would normally of beaten our jukels easy peasy,..but,.had made a foolish mistake,.. maybe hit a fence, or got bundled into a deep ditch... BUT,..on a regular basis,...the truth will always stand out,..and only the best of dogs will be the victor,.. time after time.... My rabbiting/mouching curs, are forever finding and tracking Roe Deer,...but,.. I think that is about their fecking limit....

Qualifications Or Self Taught?
Phil Lloyd replied to snakey's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I feel that if anyone is going to specialise in the more rural types of pest control,.as opposed to the Commercial and Domestic workload of 'Rats , Mice, and Crawling Insects' , etc, then it pays to have undergone a whole lot of 'previous' As a long time, Rural Pester,..it is often the things that I learned, by myself, that have enabled me to work and prosper, for myself.... However, for bug work, I realy think you do need a fair bit of extra tuition,..if only to steer clear of the Law Courts.... -
