  1. Yes I agree,...and I always prefer Cattle Dog pups or Curs, to stand their ground... I'm sure lads have experienced bullocks bothering them, when out with the ferrets Nothing you do will stop them tear arsing around, and flattening your long nets,..same at night, when walking through a pasture that has a herd of the crazy feckers in it.... I would never allow a lurcher to worry stock,.but, if your dog puts a quick bite in, to a steers face, it will usually back off and leave you in peace... Most of the male lurchers from my original line, would do the same to uninvited guests, if
  2. True words,...some of the Saluki hybrids are extremely versatile...
  3. The facility to question another man's claims is everyone's,.by right... We have all heard 'tall tales' and beer tent boasts,..ever since lurcher lads started to get together, and have the craic... Personaly,..I always give the matter a wee bit of thought, before calling a fellow hunter a liar..
  4. Had a walk out with that coursing dog Andy,... He did his stuff on a quick brace,..ran, fast or slow, depending on the chase,..and then, sat up on the warren,.pretty as ya like, super quick on the bolters,...honoured the long net,.real canny fecker,...and we ended the morning in the pub... The jukel just sat outside in the sunshine,..no lead required,.just like an old cur dog at the Farmer's market... He kills most species of hornies,.no probs,.and his owner tells me that he is exceptionally well bred,.whatever that means... I was a hare's breath away from using him over my speckled
  5. Folk tend to go down the greyhound route, when they are either dissatisfied or disappointed, with a certain type of lurcher..." It needs more speed, more size,.more,.whatever...." They can see no further, than the algebraic equations, of three quarter breeds, three eights x five eights, etc, etc,.. And for those that just are 'in it' for the short term,..such an action is possibly the best way to go,.. BUT to produce a hunting dog (not merely a hare courser or a racer),... but a find-um,.feckem, fetch-um on home merchant,..well,..personaly, I would always favour using a tried and tes
  6. Cracking dogs,...I've had some great fun with staffs,..and look-a-likes,... Dogs will undertake all manner of different tasks, if they are brought up to do so, and I am a great believer in getting my moneys worth. ...rats, rabbits,...whatever....
  7. Truth is,..as hunting men, we should not need to take steps to protect ourselves, but the facts are,..we have to.
  8. Facts are, the real money in rabbits, has always been in getting paid a wage to control them...
  9. Yeah, nice to read about the ferreting, bolting, etc,..makes me wish for the Autumn,..fecking silly really,..wishing your life away, just to get out on the warrens again....but,..there ya go.. As for putting up photos on the Internet , copyright stamps, etc... Well,..it can be a dodgy old game.... images can end up ANYWHERE... All the best, Chalkwarren...
  10. Constructive, sensible, sensitive advice....and well worth listening to
  11. Yes, that was the advertisment I gave to Victor...
  12. Border Lad,....you love that young jukel ...
  13. Hmm, .. Can't say I remember your phone call Whin,..but then it would have been over 20 years ago.. and we did not have a lot of vonga between us, so I doubt that my cameraman would have fancied travelling, all the way from Hampshire to Suffolk,..to film a collie cross, catching a rabbit,... or a tennis ball... Besides,..it is always difficult filming away from home, and you can bet your life, that when you all agree to meet up and have a day or a night out,.it fecking rains, or the sea mist drifts in.... I can honestly say , I have never been lucky enough, to have a camera to hand when thin
  14. My Father bred plenty of sheepdog litters back in the day,..and there was often a hairy,. 'beardie' type amongst the whelps... Border, Beardie, Kelpie, whatever,..I like them all...
  15. I'm all for a piss take,.and if I was ever to travel oop North,.towards the Land of the Whin,..I will be looking for Lobsters,..cos, the hunting of them juicy feckers takes a fair bit of bottle (I ain't much of a swimmer)...and legend has it, that this guy... understands the rules of hospitality...I learnt this attribute from the Bedouin,.and I rate it highly...far higher, than the mere catching of a big pile of silly critters. The one thing that Whin obviously has,.is an extremely thick skin,....and for that, I envy him.....
  16. That is a dangerous old game to play.... fecking silly,...seen such foolishness cause fierce battles...
  17. Beautiful young prospect,..and you are right to get out there, as much as possible... They learn nothing sat at home.... But,..do pop the dead bushytails into a carrier bag,...they are invariably infested with parasites that will certainly bite the pup,.and such blood sucking feckers CAN cause allergies, and even create the dreaded, flea bite syndrome... I used to take my dogs on the trap line, and regularly laid a few dozen greys in the van beside them,..however, I now bag em up ... All the best, CW.. www.chalkwarren.co.uk
  18. All these crazy 'bish/bash' arguments and who is the best, biggest, fastest, nonsence has been going on for DECADES... Truth is, I was no better ,..(maybe, even a whole lot worse)...and like IanB says,..this urge to compete and to try and convince, all and sundry what a main man you are,..sooner or fecking later, eats ya up, and ultimately destroys you... I salute any man, who truly wants, to walk the walk,..but, as you get older and see a bit more of the world,..the desire to show everyone around you, what a great white hunter you are,..really does fade into insignificance...
  19. It is a free country,..and, same as everyone else on here,..Whin is entitled to have an opinion.... http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk
  20. "Trappers must be guided by their own consciences,.not merely by rules..." All the best,...CHALKWARREN... http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk
