Phil Lloyd replied to ibro's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Hey Ibro,..I was only having the craic with ya,...(in the UK that means, just having a laugh,.and not being serious)... No way,.. would I, (or any genuine hunting man) ..charge you, good money, for a day out, with the ferrets..it just isn't done... If you are still keen in a few weeks time,..do get back to me and I'll sort something out.... -
i need to accompany any group for ferreting
Phil Lloyd replied to ibro's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Hi Ibro,..Salam Alakem ,.. I am your Brother,.I will take you out on my ground,...and I will train you, as though you were my Son...but, could you please offer a wee bit more than £50,..could you please give me at least £... For this amount, I will teach you ,..all about ferrets,... If you do not have money, I will accept Persian Carpets instead... All the best, Chalkwarren... -
Feck the grommets,..(hey, what am I saying )..but, I grew up with Young and Sons,..'Pyjama cord' ,..headers and footers,..and to be honest, I still love the feel of em,.. on a dark and windy night...

You did well to get away with that Brimmer..fair play to ya.. Had a similar thing happen a while back.. I was with a team of lads, hired to move a few rabbits off a Fuel Depot.. As we pulled onto the place,..I spied a trio of rabbits, drop into, a three hole set, so,.I said nothing and raced over, to get in first.... Big mistake.... You know what,.the second that ferret's tail disappeared to ground,.I fecking knew, that I should not have done it The ferret had bottled up the three rabbits, and she just could not move em, or kill, em,.and would not leave,em... Six foot down ,

I spent some time recently, with what you might term, a kinda, old school, Spaniel trainer.. We talked about many things, and I was flattered, when he described me as being a fellow dog trainer,...however,..upon reflection,..I feel that his outlook on the training /schooling side of the game, especially regarding the entering of puppies,..has certainly changed my own way of doing things. As a rough and ready, cur monger myself,...and a lifelong devotee, of the mouching style lurcher, I think we can learn a fair bit from such folk. All the best, CW..

if greyhounds are the fastest?...
Phil Lloyd replied to whippet pup's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Interesting comments,.well,..definitely for those of us, that have a passion for the lurcher anyway.... This is a massive subject, and it is one that has been doing the rounds, since I was a wee nipper... Anyway,..Cyber Talk is cheap,..and,.although, I am a dumb old fecker, I've finaly twigged on,..after several years of pointless 'bish/bash,.. that, any sensible debate is destined to go tits up,.sooner, rather than later,...however,.. ....there was a time, long ago,..when we used greyhounds locally,.to undertake a certain task,..and they were plenty good enough to fill the van,. -
baiting fenn traps/springers
Phil Lloyd replied to bunny tickler's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Good advice Paulus.. Personaly, in boxes. I like to place a bait at the back of the tunnel/pocket, etc,.and encourage the target animal, to cross over the trap in order to reach it...I rarely put anything on the plate itself... With rats,.I often find that it is better to place a few 'run through' tunnels...alongside their travel-ways and, if possible,..get the Fenn down lower than ground level,.only leaving the trigger plate exposed, for their wee feet to walk onto.... Whatever,..all the best, and good trapping... Regards, Chalkwarren.. -
That's the way to do it...

is lamping hares easier than daytime?
Phil Lloyd replied to craigluckyjihad's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
By and large, it was always, more productive, taking the hares after dark with a determined dog and a dazzler...and a few, well placed gate/gap nets, also helped fill the bag.... Daytime coursing was always great fun,..but, frequently,.emotional... -
Well I'm out rabbiting or trapping moles most days,..and I am as fit as a 'buck rat',..so, as you guys so rightly say, age is no barrier,..but,..this wee thread has taught me, just how, competitive the Spaniel business seems to be... Don't think it is really my scene... I'll leave the competitions, to them as need the buzz,.. and stick to being,... a veteran Moucher....

Feck that....

Real interesting thread... I'm enjoying my fun days out with the Working Cockers,... So fecking tempted,.... However, the transition from the curs,.to schooling a gun dog, seems daunting,...so much to learn,.and so little time left...

Now, that is a class act...her successes. described succinctly,.. and with a refreshing modesty.... Respect....

I doubt if an inch, here or there, will make much difference to the agility of a good, working whippet...

Many thanks for your most erudite advice,...I have certainly taken it all on-board... Kind regards, CHALKWARREN...

lurchers " English shepherd dog " anyone tried them?
Phil Lloyd replied to kevin-Day's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The main criteria for trying to create a 'new type' of working dog,..has got to be,.work... Cosmetic matters,..do not matter,..and when such things begin to enter the equation,..it is definitely time, to get yer coat.... All the best, CHALKWARREN... -
lurchers " English shepherd dog " anyone tried them?
Phil Lloyd replied to kevin-Day's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Kelpies are selectively bred, specialist, sheep herders,..they are masters of their craft,.even more so, in their country of origin... Like most other pastoral workers, they are usually, good honest dogs,.but,..so are many Border Collies... -
I like Beardie lurchers a lot...

Never used a daytime hare killer... Two reasons really,..firstly,..I kept getting pulled,...and secondly,..the fecking, rip roaring flint.... However, when I was lamping and freelancing, full time,..a hare was there to be killed..end of... I've taken plenty in the snares, the night nets and also shot the feck out of them, with my old .22 rook rifle, and of course,..dazzled em.. A rabbit was always a quid a carcase,.for fecking decades,..but a hare, fetched far more,.so they were a bonus.. Down here, the hares are shot in their hundreds, by Johnny Foreigner ,..them wealthy boys ab

R.I.P Fellow Hunter..... As others have said,.he was a brave guy, to take control of a situation, that was not of his making,..that showed true grit... More and more, of the old school are leaving us,.and in their passing... a unique part of UK rural life dies with them.. Inshallah,..we will all survive this modern, politically correct way,.and continue to use our hunting dogs, as Mother Nature intended... All the best, CHALKWARREN..
