  1. The best way to avoid any problems is to be inconspicuous,...and as Inan so rightly says, this is not a war we can win. As hunters, we are not in a fair fight and the cards have been dealt unfairly,..and are heavily stacked against us.. Nothing will ever stop a hunting man from hunting,..FACT...but ya gotta be sensible....
  2. Hunted over similar Bings,... Great places to have a mouch around,...we have nothing like that darn sarf,...and if there was,..they would fence them in,.put footpaths and signs everywhere,..and turn em into Nature Reserves,.for the Butterflies...
  3. Arthritis inevitably gets into damaged bone,..and it is a rotten thing to see an otherwise sprightly lurcher, buggered up, through foot and wrist injuries..There is nothing to be done. You can try and avoid bad ground, but it is part and parcel of a working dogs life, and foot damage can occur at any time..My own hands are pretty much fecked with arthritis and some mornings I can barely chin a rabbit,.but after a few I seem to loosen up..I think the dogs are the same, they need a run or two to get the digits moving,..but suffer for it, next day.. Such is life, eh..
  4. Sane and sensible words there lads.. Fractions, equations and mathamatical formuli,..are possibly nessesary to create some scientific end product,...but in general,..the terms, half cross, three quarter bred, Three Eights Five eights, etc,...would seem to be the ideal and easily understood creations, of the professional breeder and seller of dogs... Nothing wrong with that, but for some lads, it can become obsessional.... Only yesterday,.in a quest for the truth,.... ..I was chatting to a fellow that has known of me, for at least thirty years,.... Hopefully,..we sorted a few things
  5. Bitches are all different,...and it pays to keep a close eye on the dates, etc....
  6. @ Inan.... Personaly,...I think the concept of the lurcher show, has helped to improve the life of a lurcher... When I visited, what was possibly the first ever show,..it wasn't up to much,.just a gathering of miscellaneous enthusiasts,..fox hunting people ,.horsey folk,.raggedy men, mouchers and downright rogues Some of the dogs, were poor as crows,.and our knowledge of that most versatile of all canines,.the lurcher,..was limited,.to say the least...It really was a case of the blind,.. leading the fecking blind ! I remember my first Judging appointments... No smart se
  7. Shows, are for showing,..nothing to do with working ability,...and anyone who thinks otherwise is being extremely naive...
  8. Personaly,..I find those slip lead contraptions to be more akin, to items of bondage.. They are fiddly diddly wee things, and I have found, that on the rare occasions, when a dog needs to be physically restrained,.such as walking out across the stubble during the day, with several other lurchers on slips,...it is far better, to thread a nice wide comfortable strap through a collar, and take it from there.. Easy peasy... The 'quick release' slip leads were all the vogue back in the 1980s.. Every field sports supplier was selling his own variety,..but,..they were never for me,..fa
  9. Mac looks to be a nice sort... Yeah, them deer are a pain in the butt,..they turn up when you least expect them... They are a fecking nuisance, that I could do without... Nice to be up and about, first thing though, eh...
  10. Good to see a nice selection of ferreting dogs,....
  11. Well I would never intentionally walk out to kill Leverets or milky does. My dogs are 'strictly ferreting' and would hardly trouble a good, strong, daytime hare,..but,..on places where the poor feckers are destined for the .22, or shotgun, I never feel bad about harvesting them... Each to their own in the lurcher game...
  12. Hi Fireman,.... Yes, the ACD lurchers, had excellant feet,..however, I've seen a few Slughis, running in Morocco, and although they seemed to be, a raggedy arsed bunch of critters,.they were certainly durable ... I also rate the foot structure, of the Siberian Husky types,..but, to be honest,..most of the hard working Herding types have good strong feet,...cos as you know,..they fecking need them
  13. Personaly,...I don't think actual physical size comes into the equation,..although I wouldn't necessarily choose to field a giant lurcher, or by the same token,..a canine midget,...whatever,..a rabbiting dog needs to be quick on the warren...and fully understand the game plan.. For ferreting, be it recreational or business,..all things being equal,..it is all down to attitude,..both canine,..and human... Truth is, some dogs take to it,.and some dogs just don't...
  14. The only thing that is certain as regards lurchers,..is that nothing, is certain...
  15. In my opinion,...and it is only an opinion..... "The best type of feet,.are those that sustain the least amount of damage, over a long period of varied work."..
  16. Cattle dogs need to know the score, and react immediately to situations, or they become a liability in themselves...Personaly, I would always prefer to have a good dog, watching my back,.at all times
  17. Amazing pictures, as per usual,.. and a fabulous location to have a wander over...
  18. Cattle will kill a dog real easy,..so, if you have to encourage large beasts to move away, from a work area,..you either need a determined and fearless, face biter, that knows the score, or a canny barker that has enough savvy, to steer well clear of flashing hooves,..or, it will get emotional...
  19. I know the score with them Don types,..my old Cattle Dogs were the same,..and you are on tender-hooks, every time they rase their heads and breath in, that intoxicating scent ,...Even today with my own skinny whippet cur,..its like living on the edge, const and praying that she doesn't go walkabout..Each trip out
  20. That baby girl will never forget,.. those days out..
  21. That is an amazingly big old blue sky,.. that you have up there.. Bet Don would enjoy a wee trip out....get a bit of fresh air in his lungs....
  22. I am sure Matt knows the score, regarding legislation...
  23. Natural tunnels,...constructed from localised materials and placed throughout a shoot,.one on every hedgerow, and sited, either side of gateways, crossing places etc,..are deadly... Every sporting estate would have hundreds of tunnels for stoats;some of them being in existence, for generations of keepers and under-keepers.
  24. Seen some nice bull blood lurchers recently... They had been created, via the older bloodlines,.. then carefully ameliorated, with coursing types... Real impressive animals and, in my opinion,...a definite improved type of hunting dog,...I envied their owners... How I wish, we had such fabulous material, in the 70s and 80s,...it would have made the job a whole lot easier... Yeah Bull crosses,...I like em...
