  1. I've got the new book, quality as per usual from DH, he certainly knows how to put his thoughts and theories onto paper...best author bar none IMO.
  2. That's a nice sight to greet you...
  3. I can't fault any of Darcy's books, always a decent read, good photos and portray our sport in a good, humane way...
  4. I won't feed bread myself, I like them to have flesh and bones. Hovis or Kingsmill?
  5. To me good breeding is the start of the jigsaw, then bringing on a pup and getting it out amongst everyday things progressing onto out coupled up on digs as it gets older, then when you think it's ready letting it go and hoping it has the drive, nose, determination etc. to see the job through until it's dug to is what makes a digging dog. I think a dogs upbringing bears a big resemblance onto how the dog will turn out as the final product, not saying all dogs make the grade but a good upbringing and confidence in it's owner helps a dog to be a better finished article IMO.
  6. I think people that are going to pay high prices for dogs are going to want to make their money back, meaning that the pup will be bred from regardless of how good (or shite) it turns out to be, just to recoup some of the coin. Free to trusted mates is the best way IMO.
  7. Well said, dog theft seems a bigger thing in Ireland than it is over here for some reason?
  8. I remember the 'Red' dog off the old Patterdale site, a lad on there called 'Taffy' owned it I think if it's the same dog.
  9. I think it does matter, I wouldn't like to think I was breeding to a certain line or dog and then getting told 3 or 4 generations later that the breeding was wrong.
  10. Fair play Glyn, heard good thing's about Chaz and Tilly...
  11. Downsouth I was told that 'Billy' was out of N's 'Charlie'? L' up here that had 'Molly' said she was 'Billy's' litter sister and N' gave her him when she was a pup.
  12. Some fair comments on here, and BB I think the badger ban was '73 not '78.
  13. I believe the 'Barney' dog was a black and tan from Barnard Castle, there's a pic of it in Frain's 'Middleton' book. I've a couple of mates that have a grandson and great grandson of the dog and they're both fox only at best.
  14. I think to breed off a bitch or dog that hasn't made the grade regardless of the breeding goes against everything we strive for, and I don't like the 'oh but it's got all the right blood etc etc' because surely the blood can't be that good for it to leave you in a predicament to want to breed or even keep a dog that has spewed?? And also how many times in that dog's pedigree have other 'non workers' been bred off because 'the blood's right'? I think NCooney is correct aswell saying to breed off the dog/ bitch out of a good working litter rather than an outstanding dog/bitch that was the only
  15. I've seen a couple of whites from black parents, also recently seen black pups that have a lot of white on them (chin, chest and feet). Just a case of mixed breeding (Russell, Patterdale, bull etc.)in the pedigree of the parents I'd say.
  16. I'm sure it was N.T from Wakefield and not Wheeler that owned 'Charlie'.
  17. Out of all 3 books there's about ten genuine 'terriermen' that have been there and done it, he should have done a book on them and left it at that, he's overdoing it now and it must be only for one reason £££££££
  18. If you want some advice don't buy the new 'Digging The Dirt', it's f*****g terrible. It seems to me that he just interviews anyone that owns a terrier, not to mention his terrible spelling and his writing style just doesn't make sense when you read it.
  19. Dogs looking well, long time no speak mate.
  20. Like has been said you can find a fox anywhere this time of year, badger setts, rabbit eaths, bale stacks, drains, artificials...and that comment about it should smell of fox is a load of shite. The chances are the earths that smell of fox are the one's the dogs (foxes) have pissed on to mark their territory.
  21. Did the case against the Heythrop get thrown out of court then?
  22. Badger digging with terriers by Harcombe is a good book, so is Work Them Hard... by DH. The Nick Stevens book is a good read and also the little terrierbooks that Darcy does are decent.
  23. If I could get hold of some I'd use them for kennels, they have a lot of advantages over wood...cough cough...
  24. I'm smack bang in the middle of all your permission...any invites... :whistling:
