Wow,..that looks terrible ground to have a run over.... -
Latest arrival my border terrier
OldPhil replied to massey96's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hunted with some nice Border Terriers, back in the 1990's. Sometimes found them to be a tad on the sensitive side (same as myself,..they did not enjoy the company of noisy feckers).....but once they were on,..they were on... -
Enjoy your youngster,...get him out and about, everywhere,...but,... give him lots of time......

These are fabulous, selectively bred, canine atheletes,...and they have now possibly reached their zenith and for the task they have been created for, they are nie-on perfection...However,..if used as roustabout hunting dogs,..they need to be treated with the greatest respect, and due to their inate prey drive, one often has to watch out for their safety,.... and obviously,...run them accordingly....

Times have changed,... The facts are,... if you get a pull,..the authorities might steal your dogs from you.....and personaly,..the enjoyment of working the jukels is the only real reason for hunting these days...I don't need the meat, and I sure don't need to sell game to pay the bills,..so,..the risk of losing canine pals,..has to be considered

Good on the wee gal,.....its a hard old game.....but,.... it ends for us all eventually....

Been out with a few Alsation x Greyhound hybrids,...also seen the infamous Geofrey Batten's noted example... I have found that , in much the same way as many other pastoral lurcher hybrids, it is best to use a nice smart sprint Greyhound, bitch as opposed to a girt big example..Many that I have seen, turn out way too big, and unless your desired quarry species is the Fallow Buck....then a massive running dog,.... is of no benifit. I've a few images of this crossbred in my files,..when I look at these photos, I am reminded of just how useful such a strong and powerful, canny lurcher

Yeah,...I try to get the Long Net supports, facing the way that the bolt is coming from,...in saying that,...when you are using 'stop nets' and ditch nets to split a hedgerow, and you have two teams working, right and left, the rabbits will often 'hit ' the nets arse about face,....this is where you need work dogs that really do understand the job.... Sometimes, in the old rabbiting game, you have to go with the flow,...nothing is written in stone....

Yes,...I liked Andy's Don dawg.... We were fetching my Dusty up to mate with Don, and Andy was kind enough to allow us... Unfortunately, we kinda messed up with our timing and the bitch was ready to go, sooner rather than later, so we had to act quick.. Luckily, I had a local cur lined up as an emergancy , and we just about caught the bitch in time Ive no complaints regarding the resulting rabbiting litter, but it would have been nice to have used Don...

Bull grey x saluki bull grey opinions?
OldPhil replied to JkLane97's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Walked out with a few of these types,...I reckon that a good example would be the ultimate UK Canine preditor... There is not much that could escape their undoubted physical attributes,....mind you,...how many of us really need such a phenomanal critter, and how many lads would have enough genuine work, to accommodate one Amazing dogs though.... -
Cracking pups,...good bone, bold demenour and nice long backs,.....I am so envious.....

Lovely pup Brother,....I know that you will give it,... the best of life....

How on Earth can you avoid such a thing from happening,..especially in the wilds of God's Own Country

There was two lads in the motor....they would have been far better served, getting out and fronting the angry guy... If he tried to detain them,.their best choice would be to defend themselves, or at least try to convince the guy that they would be leaving the field, and would not be returning. Most sane and sensible custodians of the land, will accept this even if they don't believe ya.. IF you panic , like a big girly,..and foolishly maim or kill the dopey fecker, you will be serving time when you really should be enjoying what may well be,..the last and final years,... of

Ideal type for the roustabout rabbiting game....I love the 'Non-Ped, "Hard Bloods",..they are fecking beautiful and streets ahead of the Pedigree animals on the race track or coursing field,.BUT,..just take a look at the legs and feet of the KC Registered Whippet,..albeit a 'working whippet line',....and not a Crufts type... I know the type that would last the course with a full -time pro rabbit controller.... It took me years to face facts,..but,... now I know....

Lovely looking dogs on display.... My canine pals are all old and feeble, like me,..but, I don't think that hunting gene will ever really diminish...

First wasps' nest of the season

It's been a good year.....but,.. I am glad that its nearly over..... -
We are using James Wellbeloved Lamb and Rice (Grain Free) and mixing it with Lidl Chicken Portions.. Back in the day I expected a 'made dog' to be capabul of feeding itself,..plus earn for me,..and we fed surplus 'bits' from anything that was grassed.. But today,..we just buy from the local Pet Shop..... How the mighty have fallen, eh...

Old dogs are often like old Hunting Men... As time goes by, their ability to cope with Meat Bones and Raw flesh sometimes dimishes... For that reason, I now feed all my Veteran rabbiters on a mix of Lidl frozen chicken breasts, mixed with a Senior type of grain free, Lamb and Rice kibble... Obviously, I throw in a raw egg a couple of times a week,..but more importantly, I try not to overfeed them . Copious, regular excersise is a great aid to their digestion, and I allow the dogs, plenty of retieving games and other beneficial excersise. It's a sad fact,.but, as so

When I irst imported these traps, they were known as the Mitling Trap... I thought them to be the ideal trap for squirells,..and that 'built in' tunnel ,..just had to be a sure fire winner Unfortunately,..after extensive field testing, it soon became obvious that in many cases, the spring was not powerful enough, to provide a humane kill. So,..we worked alongside an American partner, and suggested that the clamping force be dramaticaly increased... This improved version is the trap that is now currently available. I have found these spring traps to be effective agai

Hunted rabbits over much of the UK,..Malham was always good fun.....

Good memories fellah,...Halcyon Days, eh..

Super wee dogs, Whippets and similar small hybrids....I wish you great sport.....

Personally,...I don't think we should over-complicate the situation, when selecting a dog for rabbit hunting... Most lurcher types can handle this particular quarry,..obviously, some are better than others.... We have bred and worked several different hybrids, over much of the UK,..and one of my prime requisites has always been, adaptablity. Facts are, when arriving at the new venue/job,..one often has scant knowledge of the 'lie of the land',..in short, you are going in blind, and for that reason alone, a working dog ( and man ) must adapt quickly, to all manner of awkward si
