  1. Hmm,..personaly,...I like to read about any hunting man's adventures,...my own days in the sun are well and truly over,..so it's always good to hear what other enthusiasts are up to... I've been around the minor field sports scene for decades, and one only has to look at the scarcity of contributors on the various hunting related Internet Forums, and indeed in the sporting press, to realise that our chosen way of life is becoming smaller and smaller... I think that I had the best of it....
  2. All's I know is,...Terrierwork is a real hard old game....
  3. Sad tale FUJI and that is why I never took to the Terrier job,...it really can be 'life and death'.... I've hunted with some well known names, and seen some cracking dirt dawgs,...but I've never been tempted to take a pup. ALL Hunting can be dangerous,..and heartbreaking, but it's something that every genuine hunting man has to come to terms with,..OR,..get out of the fecking game.... I've had a lifetime of stress, excitement, sadness and joy.... Back in the day,...my mind set was different,.. and my passion for the chase override the sorrow. Now,..I see things slight
  4. Good luck to them all,..it's a hard old life being a shushi
  5. They work in a kinda covert manner,...they are so tiny,..that have to use special techniques to achieve their ultimate goal..
  6. Sometimes, when folk are pushing Deer through a belt of woodland, towards a crossing place, it pays to keep your dogs leashed.... Often, two or three critters will run out, away from the disturbance, and if you let one dog go on the first, and just hold back for a moment until he is wed to a specific target, you can then slip your next dog, onto number two ... This method can often give you a bigger reward.... However, when hunting other quarry, I want the dog to choose his spot and position himself in the right place, at the right time... It sometimes takes an inexperienc
  7. One thing rabbits just cannot handle, is the wet AND the cold,...combined...... They can take one or the other,...but continuous soaking, day in, day out,...never being able to get dry and warm,.. weakens them terribly....
  8. More than likely.... Tommy had several Fawn whippet types,...mostly named Ruby......
  9. A good rabbiting/ferreting dog is a valuable aquasition, ..more so if they can help out
  10. I belive there are still a fair few useful types about, I guess ya gotta show some respect to their owners, and obviously,...put yer hand in your pocket
  11. Well, we have all survived,...just about... Keep the faith mate.....
  12. The type of loser, who (for whatever reason) callously leaves his dog behind,..is the stamp of creature that really should be left behind.. If it comes on top,...yes,...it can get emotional,..but you must never leave your pals,...and to willingly abandon a jukel simply because it lacks the minerals to slate your thirst, or doesn't come up to standard,...is also a pretty poor excuse
  13. Yep, by its very nature, Lamping can be dangerous,...nothing much can prevent accidents... I was once advised by an expert,...to always reconnoitre the running grounds during the daylight hours , prior to venturing out,...just to accertain if there were any obsticals or bits and pieces, that might cause an after -dark collision.... Sounded a great sound-bite,...alas the naive fool had scant idea of the night hunting game To him it was an exciting game, a mere folly,...something to romantisise and write about,....whereas for others, it was a wee bit more serious..
  14. You are right there Moll.. I've had a few pure whippets and crossbreds ,..they have all been grand wee hunters and always great fun. Facts are ,..I've been mouching on various places, nothing serious, just having a quiet look around, seeing what is about and getting the lie of the land , perhaps for a future visit.....and,..with some of these diminutive tykes, they have caught stuff, in the bushes, reed beds, woodland brash and even found game sitting snug in the hedgerows... I remember taking a small Blue bitch into a nice piece of keepered woodland, and within a very short t
  15. Bedlington hybrids can occasionally be hard work.... Sometimes folk forget the actual Bedlington Terrier connection.. These ancient types were originaly bred to hunt out their quarry in a most relentless way..I recall the late George Newcombe telling me how he frequently lost a dog or two, when out walking on the Moor.. He seemed to accept it as being part and parcel of his style of hunting... Obviously,..most of us cannot be doing with this kind of situation...it invariably ends in tears. Most dogs (of any type) that possess an extremely high prey drive, will be difficu
  16. I reckon he will get ya in the end... From what I have seen,...he is just the same, as I once was, (albeit thirty long years ago).... He is relentless in pursuit...
  17. Yeah,...that really was some special field... Great area for bolting to the dog,...no nets, no fuss,.and I don't recall ever leaving the field, with less than 50 or 60 conies... Doubt I will ever see that place again,...it was the gift that just kept on giving....
  18. Keep at them Bonny Lad....,...catch a few for me....
