Bedlington x whippet 1st cross.....
OldPhil replied to Shortstraw's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yes,.. that dog was handled by two guys,.. he was kinda, the communal fox dog' and frequently accompanied the lads on their digging forays, with the Border terriers,...What I did notice was that he had an amazing hatred of Vulpine..? In fact, when hunting in tight woodland , he was exceptionally sharp onto a bolter, and invariable connected ,..and when he did, there was no getting him off,.. until the quarry was dispatched... A useful dog for that style of hunting....?- 52 replies

You guys are right,.. the raw meat situation has definitely spiralled out of control? Most Butchers nowadays , have chosen to sell their scrap meat for dog food, and process everything into 'pet mince'.. Obviously, they would be foolish not to utilise everything at their disposal to help pay the rent, but it is a bit of a blow to the lad with a team of running dogs and dirt dogs...It makes everything kinda pricey..? The Slaughter houses have also tightened up on certain matters and you really do need to be, 'in the know' and well in , to get a regular supply from such places. I have

Yes, a Fenn is designed to be a 'Jump Trap'...and by its very nature it will spring upwards, to take hold of a victim... It is the operators responsibility to ensure that the trap is placed in such a position, whereby it can make full use of it's 'action'... Many boxes, Tunnels, Burrows or Wire cages are simply not tight enough, or of the correct dimensions to take advantage of the Fenn's jump... It is imperative that the target species is pinched in, on all sides of the tunnel, and forced to accept the traps lethal embrace....?

Same if you owned a serious Lamp dawg,.. you would be understandably cautious about reporting such a rare catch?

Yeah,.. its no fun,. 'getting old'...? In common with many other veteran hunters, I have a plethora of debilitating and incredibly painful,.. physical maladies... About ten years ago I succumbed to an amazingly nasty bout of Osteoarthritis.... Problem was,. (and still is),. the disease mostly affected,.... my hands..? As a retired rabbit catcher and a very busy Mole Trapper,.. this painful ailment really did feck me up big time.. Truth is, this problem has been coming for a long time....I have always enjoyed a dig,.. whether it be deep to a vulpine, or burrowing down,

Facts are,...some guys,.. whether they be the permission holders or others,...can really cause you hurt...? Lots of men can have a fair do, and they will most definitely have a fight,.. and some can genuinely hold their own with other fellahs,.. but at night,.. things are different...All sorts of shit can go down,. and its often best to get the feck out of a place...Nobody likes being 'scared off',.. and in truth, that is what it is,.. but having personally been in this situation several times,.. I have found that discretion is sometimes, a better option,.. than valour? We are hunter

Its always good to hear that a few folk are trying their hardest, to keep the old Deerhound Lurcher flag,.. flying high..? Not really concerned, as to their motives, or even their concept of the finished article,.. just as long as the integrity of the type is maintained.. I've so many fond memories of Deerhound based lurchers, ..I would hate to see them disappear from view completely... During the 1970's/1980's, everyone I knew,.. was running those crisp coated jukels,...and by feck,...there really was some quantity,.. of edible gear put to bed...? Times change of course,.
