  1. You will get away with using hazel rods for a bit, but they can snap when a rabbit hits the net sometimes, so have plenty spare. If your permissions on hard ground also you more than likely wont be getting natural poles into the ground either. Your probably better off buying decent poles and turning them into a quick set system.
  2. Beddy whippets drop as much hair as any other dog, if not more. They have an under coat and top coat so they shed double, so besides the normal long hair that falls out of them you'll also be sweeping up lint when they start shedding. Great wee dogs, will go into cover and escape most knocks from barbed wire fences without getting ripped and will catch bolters. Will also put in a full nights lamping. Downside to some of them is they can be too keen which makes them stubborn and prone to hunting up. They pick up scent and you no longer exist to them. I wouldnt do without her now but mine was a
  3. My hob has been in with the jills this past month. Put your hob in with one of the jills to see if he scruffs it. If he doesnt scruff it hes out of season. He might start licking her ears, thats normal when they first meet or havent seen each other for a while.
  4. Squirrel actually does taste nice. Id freeze them solid for a couple of days before id feed them raw to the ferrets.
  5. Never experienced anything like it but all my ferrets bar two leave the kids pet rabbits alone. Sounds like a handy trait to have taking the young ones out the hole rather than sit and kill the lot. Especially when rabbits can be scarce in areas, it gives you the option to kill or let them live to grow for another day.
  6. Ferrets should be well up for the job. Can you not leave the door shut and bring the dog in while the ferrets are rooting them out ?. Lock them in and get them all.
  7. Starve them for 2 day then give them the rabbit. Hide the kibbles well out the way so they cant smell it. Iv one the same here, she even knows where I keep the nuts and heads straight into the shed for it. Shes a strange one, loves cooked potatoes too. Eats it out the dogs bowl.
  8. Theres no holding the wee fooker back lmao.
  9. My mates got a perm that I can go on with him so thats the only odd bit of ferreting il be doing. Couple of hours driving each way to it. I dont have the time for the traveling hours nowadays. Family and work commitments. I got new permissions this year but they got hit too, again they were 2 hours drive away.
  10. Saw a fox take a rabbit in the lamp before. As i put the lamp on the rabbit a pair of green eyes from a big dog fox lit up a couple of feet away from the rabbit and picked it up and gone. Had a young fox trying to take rabbits on the lamp before too and following me around all night. My dog never seemed to put it off from having a go. Had a fox or a badger take 2 rabbits out my bag too. Stashed it as it was too heavy carrying it around. Was only gone for an hour. They are pretty brave here.
  11. After having a look at my hunting spots this year iv decided to call it quits. Last dose of myxi wiped virtually everything. I had an island with a population of a few thousand rabbits on it, cant find one on it now and any of my other spots theres only one here and there. Il keep the dog for now but Im getting rid of most my ferrets. I'll be done for a good while by the looks of it.
  12. Jills available. west of ireland some have seen some work and some have seen none due to shortage of rabbits past couple of years and more of my perms been hit with myxi. Sitting in cages doing nothing so they need to go to good homes.
  13. Plenty people I know dont use them and their always losing ferrets. I wouldnt be without one. T bars and lining dont work over here the burrows are too deep and long most of the time. I dont give kits to anyone who doesnt have a finder either, that includes mates.
  14. Maybe putting a advert in garden centres and farm equipment stores for free rabbit control, might bring in one or two permissions. Plenty gardeners looking for someone to get rid of rabbits that are digging in the lawn. Try golf courses and graveyards that have rabbits in the area also, its no just farmers that have land.
  15. I got a jill thats less than half the size of the rest of my jills. Smallest jill iv ever saw in the flesh. Shes had a couple of goes in the sand dunes ferreting but after a couple of hours and she was back in the box. She was getting sickened getting kicked around and starts half heartedly working. Shes good for doing stone dyke walls or under tombs and tight spots. You dont get a full days work out of her on big warrens. Shes more of a pet than a proper worker but still does a wee bit.
  16. Wild ferrets could go longer without making a decent kill than what your going to leave them. Iv left mine in the run for four days. I just gave them enough nuts and extra water bottles and they were sound. Gave them nuts as it was summer, wasnt wanting to come back to maggots in the run.
  17. Couple of alsatians I had would let you in but the fun started when people tried to leave. Couple of my pals got a good bite on the arse and would have got worse if there had been nobody there to save them. Dog would lie quietly once someone was in and act as if it was a asleep and bide its time.
  18. I totally understand horses for courses Sir. I need my bigger bews to kill quickly when they catch and clear the warrens quick as possible. The warrens can be huge and I dont like hanging around watching the scenery, although its nice its not my thing lol. Most of the ground I do is big sandy warrens and more than 6ft deep digs are the norm. Any more than 6ft I wont dig. The bigger ferrets do catch more but put more in the bag too if theres a good number of rabbits around. We had them in plague proportions till 2 years ago. Just my personal preference that works for me. I also keep the smaller
  19. I prefer the bigger type ferrets for working they get the pest control jobs done quicker one way or another. Nice looking bew with a sound temperament Sir .
  20. Their normally full grown around 2 years old.
  21. I was out lamping one night and the dog ended up whipping a bunny off the entrance of a burrow. The rabbit never saw the dog coming to the last second and tried to turn too late. I push gutted it and could hear what sounded like light rain coming from the guts a few seconds later. I shone the lamp on it and the guts were literally walking away. For my own curiosity I cut it open and the full intestinal tract was full of small white tape worms. Their bloody disgusting.
  22. At 4 months old and their biting without drawing blood. Their playing with you and seeing how much the can get away with. Some kits are more playful than others. Iv some ferrets at 2 years old that play and weasil war dance jumping and mouthing but they never draw blood. Then iv ferrets that have never even tried mouthing not even when they were hungry. I personally wouldnt class it as niipping as their not doing it to hurt you.their very much like a pup or a kitten playing.
  23. If you dont have older ferrets to run the kits with just give them plenty of practice. They should be well able to clear a warren by the end of the season. Or at least find the rabbits and stick with them or kill them.
  24. I had a hob that would often eat them too. Never made him sick, used to make me feel sick though. He was well fed so wasnt lacking anything, he was just fond of a big slug now and again.
  25. I give mine a bowl of porridge. Not too heavy and staves off hunger better if shes going to be out for a while. Normally about 7 or 6 hours before we head out, then she gets her normal grub and amount when she comes back in.
