  1. seen one up a tree in the middle of cover one morning when i thought hounds had put one to ground. Sat tight like a cat looking down on the hounds while they scrambled looking up and running around confused. It got away too, i gave it too much of a fair chance. Survival of the fittest, i can't argue with that.
  2. Great debate lads. World wide www. hunting forum. Now its all down to how good "bolting" terriers are at working charlie compared to "digging terriers" Good Luck
  3. My mate had a dig on not far from the back of his house one evening when his bitch dropped into a spot in a moss bog. He went and got tools and he openly admitted after the episode that the 4ft dig he had dug to get his bitch wasn't wide enough. Anyway he broke in went head first into the narrow dig to get his bitch and couldn't get out! Thank fk for mobile phones was his words. He rang the young lad that lived on the farm down the lane and told him where he was and come quick. Said it seemed like eternity and was shit scared because he was upside down face in full view of the action and was h
  4. Obviously not mate. Put it like this over 10 years or so ago we had a great dog, you dropped the dog and he stayed until dug to no matter how long it took. A lot of men seen the dog work up and down the country, he was a machine. The dog done some time under the sod in his life and i was glad i was about to see him work. Before the bellman came out like most we only had the knocker box. Dropped him in a big place one day that we had been brought to and we didn't know the extent of the spot until it was too late. The dog was on and we went to get him and everything shifted. Never seen the dog a
  5. seemed to work for him if it works don't fix it he dug the same earths for years Each to there own mate. Once the ground settles its back to normal that way and any animal can dig threw it again if needs be. Ive dug countless burrows in the same place over this way and its easier to dig threw and open up again for an animal than it would be if sticks are jammed in the tube.
  6. I fill halfway up with Sod's then use to loose soil to top it off in a nice pile. Sticks is just lazy.
  7. Ha general your just really throughin a spanner in the works there lad lol I'm just being honest mate, people are trying to sugar coat it for some reason. My friend has a wee bitch there and she's a bolter or (a tube) lol. He'd let her in anywhere because he knows she'll not get lost so that's the only reason she's a place in his yard he's lucky to have a big place and dogs for most situations. She get us a few foxes and that's grand she will dig the odd one that's not going to give her a hard time. Everyone knows the type. She's not what we would call a digging dog by any means and like many
  8. I'm lost now also. It's digging dogs v bolting dogs nothing to do with a digging dog in a spot and Charlie bolts so then it's a bolter ? lol.
  9. Whatever tickles your fancy. Each type serve a purpose in men's yards for different reasons and both types get results. Bolters can be run in undiggable places which is an advantage. If you are looking to know which type is the better earthdog the truth is staring you in the face. You don't see men with digging dogs running them in undiggable spots. Why is that? Simple answer one is committed to do a job to the end the other is not.
  10. I get 60lb weight of minced tripe now for £20 and usually some chicken along with it. I used to work in a slaughterhall and sold cow bellys to the doggie men for £1 or 10 sheep bellys for £1. I was glad of the extra few pound. After foot and mouth most of that stopped but it's still readily available if your in the know. I wouldn't feed it all the time would prefer the beef better. Full ribeyes, sirloins and rump extra. I buy them in bulk sometimes over 120kg. Freeze it and thaw one at a time and slice, that does me for a few days kept in the fridge.
  11. Great post Shamo. Common sense and knowledge is few and far between in the terrier world.
  12. Stopped in a yard a while back and the guy that takes the ground had a Glen bitch, I'm calling again this weekend, last day out. I'll get a pic of her and put it up. He says he got her from Wicklow? I reckon he's been on google lol. Nah, in all honesty she's a Glen alright. Big long ball of fluff arched back and chest nearly rubbing of the ground.
  13. I personally prefer the pieps box. My friend bought the new red box setup, he didn't like at all and sold it very cheap. He offered it to me first and i passed on it. An other friend bought a barryvox pulse as they were well recommended (he has my old pieps setup that i sold him) We grab the dogs and the gear and he says "have you your box and collar with you?" which i always do. He then brings his pieps setup i sold him and the barryvox pulse is left in the house. we tested them both together on different digs, handy and deep. There was nothing we could see that made the barryvox better than
  14. I think what 5 feet down is getting at is if the men that owned and dug to the dog, would have dropped a sounder first then there would be no need for another dog in behind one. Just dig to the sounder. Point being why put a dog in to find a dog?
  15. Fished it a few times myself, bird watchers walkers and other folk regularly enjoy walking along that river. Surely you know that since you grew up there. So why are you asking me why's it asking for trouble? ?
  16. No worries. I wouldn't be near any holes in warm weather let alone them ones. You'd need to be hard up dropping a terrier along there, your only asking for trouble.
  17. 2014 DVD started off good with a few nice single handed lifts on fox. Then 2 and 3 dogs, the lamping footage wasn't great. The digging was disappointing. Each to there own, I'm glad I got a copy and didn't pay for it lol. Lurchers Ireland your obviously very passionate about your dogs and your hunting. We are all the same, it was just an anticlimax imo. Atb.
  18. Is that place along the Crumlin river by any chance young man, runs into Lough Neagh not to far on down?
  19. Them mills look the ticket HPR. The only mills I ever seen before was wooden slat mills and they served there purpose for the men who owned them. The first one I seen the man explained the scenario to me and it stuck in my head. They are to be used as and extra exercise to increase fitness and not to replace regular exercise.
  20. I was being sarcastic mate Kerry blues ain't worth a butt for working dogs all they are good for is fighting with other dogs. Seen a perfect example walking my dogs the other evening. A Kerry blue of the lead ran over to a man walking a parson russell and a Lakeland. The Kb boned the russell and ended up being sorry he did because the two terriers had to be choked off the Kerry. That's all they are worth and it ain't much.
  21. If you know of any working lines or pups I am interested and willing to travel. Aggressive towards other dogs at most is how far as it goes from what I know and have seen. There still could be light at the end of the tunnel, let there be light.?
  22. What's your opinion on what an "easy earth looks like" stop.end?
  23. I know a place an old tip filled with hardcore. I have dug it a dozen times at different depths usually it turns into a hard dig. I've dug it at 2.1 with great difficulty but it has been 1.2 1.8 and sometimes less at times. Ran it one morning expecting an all day job 0.4 under the spoil. Never thought it could go so handy, not a place id run a pup, knowing my luck the pup would end up at the deep side. When running a young dog on I try and keep it not too complicated so the pup can get a few hunts over them. The day will come that the pup enters a place you think is not overly difficult and it
  24. I agree, had 3 good digs last Thursday when the weather was bad. I dug two on Tuesday from seperate places. Tried 6 different spots today after the fog and frost not a bark.
