Thanks for that SS, very informative read there. I came across collars you had made for the Ortovox D1 and I have to say they did look a neat job.
-
They all work on the same frequency as far as I know, so should work without any problem. The bnf box and ortovox collar actually work better, more accurate than the bnf set,we use both without any probs. What Ortovox collar do you use Fatman? I was looking online for them there seems only a few sites sell them and mostly they are in German. Was looking at the D1 but they seem to be discontinued, I didn't have much luck. Seems like a rechargeable B&F collar is on the cards.

So there's no available spares Columbo? Oh dear. Lol. Good way to do business, close all other doors so you have no choice only to upgrade.

Right lads, I was just checking threw my gear there and doing a bit of tidying etc.bought new batteries for my old B&F pieps box and collar for the up and coming season and I noticed the plastic around the collar and rubber seal have seen better days. The plastic would need replaced has multiple bite marks etc. and the rubber o ring is just done, to be honest it broke in my hand. I went and got a new o ring but after checking out the B&F website looking a new plastic casing and a new collar I see they don't have spares like that for sale anymore? The only collar for sale is for the rec

Looks like there's Border to me.

Caught a few in the 3lb region on a trout water close to me. Cracking fish and plenty of sport if you can locate the shoal which is easier said than done at times.

About Books And The New Authors Nowadays.
THE GENERAL replied to Lutra Lutra's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I've read a few, mostly the old terrier year books, Dig deep throw well back, Work them hard treat them like heroes. Also a few more that didn't stick in my head to the point I can't remember what they were called lol. If Terriers and terriermen of Ireland is so bad surely someone on here would like to donate there copy to me? I'd gladly give it a read and if it's that bad I'll send it back. No way am I paying my hard earned cash to buy a copy. Same as them Dvd's that other clown is making and selling to people. I have one that was given to me and the quality of the footage never mind the digg -
Yes mate I suspect it's shy as it hasn't entered the trap, no problem with the mechanism as I have it altered so it's very sensitive. Maybe just a cute one I'm dealing with but time will tell, I'd say some are super weary of traps, as for food source there is plenty about, chickens and fowl plenty of rats and the odd rabbit so that could be against me.
-
Some sound advice there lads, I'll just keep plugging away and hopefully get a result sooner rather than later. Cheers
-
Sorry, did not think about the "being stolen" where I use them that`s not an issue.I also have mine on grass, so the fox is walking on grass so unable to detect the metal cage base. Agree eggs also useful. Could wash the trap with water in case the fox can smell something they are wary of. Reposition trap if not caught for a day or 3. Dont give up Cheers, I'll give it a wash and reset it and see if I have anymore joy.
-
Yes mate it's a cage I'm using. I thought most folk covered their traps? It helps keep them hid away so they're harder to spot and not stolen. Is there a reason why you choose not to cover yours?

Trying to trap a fox in a live trap with not much success, I was just looking for some advice or tips as I feel I may be doing something wrong. I set the trap and cover it with sticks and leaves and bait only outside the trap. When the baits gone I bait the entrance and when it's gone I bait the trap itself but havnt had any luck yet apart from a hedgehog. I havnt pissed or littered around the area and I keep the dogs away from it and check it from a distance daily. That's all the info I can find on trapping so anymore would be appreciated. As for bait I'm using chicken and sardines along with

I'm on it and enjoy it like most folk. Like everything else there's bad and good, enjoyable people you can have a laugh with bit of banter and then there's annoying sorts you don't pay attention to, a bit like on here only you can't hide behind a username and act a big man, so you either keep your opinion to yourself "shit or get of the pot" as I like to call it ? Eitherway everyone's different. I'm not just on about hunting pages but many different genres. It's a no brainer. If you want trouble whether you don't know any better or you just like to push your luck for the fan club, chances are

Depending where in east Leinster but could be close to 40miles. Remember a programme on a few years back and they tracked a fox and it covered 25mile in one night not a problem.

Funny enough that's how the conversation came about. There's a fox causing a bit of bother in a small patch of land close to two main roads in dense undergrowth. There's a trap set at the minute and I see him regularly in the mornings but he hasn't went near the trap or the free meal that has been left outside it for encouragement? That's when the urine scenario was mentioned, just incase I'd urinated close to it without knowing of the implications, which I hadn't. He's in the area just can't get him in the trap or even close to it for some reason, i haven't had the dogs near the spot either a

Exactly

I was in conversation with a close friend earlier about foxes their lifestyle etc. Anyway he mentioned cups of human urine were used around pheasant pens to keep foxes away and it worked. Apparently they detest the smell of human urine. Never heard of it before and I've no reason to doubt the him either, as there's not many about with the knowledge he has. I'm only posting just out of interest btw. May lead to a decent discussion. The only way I know to repel them is with a terrier lol.
-
When I was younger I remember being told once by a wise man to "never trust a terrier" and no truer word spoken, a great bit of advice I will never forget. After a quick think I don't know anyone off the top of my head that keeps terriers kennelled together. Mine get on well in the yard like manys a mans dogs but that's were it stops. It's a bad move that's easy to make.
-
It's depends where your from. I've worked in boning halls and kill floors most my life and it's been mostly readily available for me. After the foot and mouth of 2000/01 think it was in around that date anyway, they tightened up the laws and it stopped the likes of joe public dandering into the kill floor to get bellies of the likes of me for their dogs. I used to sell 1 cow belly for £1 or 10 lambs bellies for £1 and made a good killing at it every week. Good clean fresh well washed tripe still warm at times just out of the animal. You couldn't beat it. Now I'm a butcher so my dogs get beef a

Interesting Find This Season...
THE GENERAL replied to Rabbit Hunter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I remember going to a spot one day just off a main road, pulling into the driveway of a direlict two storey house, windows and doors boarded up and a few out buildings surrounding. There was a lovely sweeping deep bank behind the house that had a few nice burrows on it. First time I was ever at this place. Eitherway we had a good few hours spent on that bank and everything went well. One of the lads was caught short so he decided to go to one of the outbuildings to do the business since we were only the other side of the hedge to the main road. He came back and said about a load of signs in t -
Interesting Find This Season...
THE GENERAL replied to Rabbit Hunter's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I would have to see the place for myself in the flesh but if it didn't look anything out of the ordinary I wouldn't be able to walk away from it, if I did it would eat me alive until I went back and dropped a dog and seen for myself what the crack was. Reminds me of a place not far from me. Most men won't and don't let a dog into it. Anytime I've been there I've never seen anyone elses digs apart from real old ones, so it always holds. I've dug it every year for the last 8 years apart from last season. Got some gruellers in it and some handy enough ones. One guy well known for his terriers tol
