  1. pete i was born in london and lived there til i was in my mid 20s. as all young blokes do, i was out and about all over the place at all hours of day or night, drinking beer and chasing women, and i can honestly say there were few times i felt afraid. yes i got up tp some silly stuff, and yes youngsters are fearless, but i have to say that our capital is nothing like the place i knew then. i can walk down streets where we used to play out in the evenings as kids ("come home when the lights come on") and these days i am frankly worried for my own safety. not just from immigrants, but the whole
  2. some cracking choices here, chaps here are a few more: zulu treasure island (the original with charles laughton , he is brilliant as long john silver) the man who would be king or best of the lot the hill one of the best and most under rated movies ever made
  3. i had an old cur bred thing that was still lamping at 13, not long shifts but i would let her have a few runs to keep her interested in life. she died from cancer not long before her 14th birthday, absolutely broke my heart as she was originally a 15th birthday present from my mum, spent nearly half my life with that dog. we've had two or three others go on to 14/15, but not really doing any work past about 10, just sniffing round after the youngsters really!
  4. some good advice on here. recall is one of those things like stockbreaking, its worthwhile constantly repeating the lessons throughout the dogs life, as recall is probably the single most important thing you will ever teach your dog.
  5. should have saved the dog and left the owner in the water....
  6. a lot of the shit we get from employers/schools/councils etc isnt actually legal directives from h&s but because the schools are totally paranoid about being sued if there is an accident. so for example conkers have never been legally banned, just one or two headmasters got a bit twitchy. if bosses/councillors etc actually had the confidence to say they will simply enforce legal requirements and for the rest of it employees can take care of themselves, it would make life a lot easier. for example, one job i was on a few years ago we were cleaning down some barns with pressure washers, blas
  7. good old biguns and big old gooduns......
  8. i was hoping for a peep at her facebook page but it has been closed ...........
  9. blair had a lot to do with it, historically immigrants are poor so tend to vote labour. nsecondly, blair was so far up the EUs arse that he allowed them to dictate a whole lot of stuff, including the numbers of immigrants.ironic, for the party of the working man, cos its us poor workers who have to live with it!! cameron has made a few noises but done nothing. my fear is that half the tory vote will go to ukip but not enough towin them the election, so the labour party will slink back into number 10. and then we are truly lost.
  10. its like any other form of insurance, seems like a rip off when youre not claiming, but worth every penny and more when the shit hits the fan

  12. the "native " population of london, the old families, kids who grew up on the same street and went to the same school together, the whole streets of blokes who worked in the same docks year after year, well that old community has almost gone now. there are still some tight areas where a few blokes would get together and give the "muslim patrol" a slap, but really the fragmentation of the old communities started in the 70s when first the docks and then other associated industries closed down. people had to travel for work, ended up moving away to get jobs (my old dad almost ended up in a cardbo

    G'day

i lived in western australia for a year, was based about an hour inland from perth and i loved it. i only came back because i couldnt sort out a visa to stay any longer. there are lots of brits in western australia especially perth and fremantle and i found them a really welcoming bunch. plenty of rabbits and foxes to go at and permission quite easy to come by apparently, just drive around asking farmers although this can mean driving big distances. i have friends in other parts of australia, both british and aussies i know from over here who have moved back, and none of them would come back t
  14. yeah all m y dogs retrieve shot game, in cover, water etc. track wounded deer, etc i think the role of the lurcher is so much more than just running down game, and performing all these different jobs means i can give them much more work than if we were just rabbiting. never had a problem with mine other than my own mistakes with training, but some lurcher crosses are not natural retrirvers and it can be a struggle to train this with them at times
  15. How much collie is in them ? I have read a 1/4 c 3/4 g would be best for first timer and lamping, but would they then lose there ruggedness ? some 3/4 throw really greyhoundy and aren't really my cup of tea, bit more brittle and a bit less wind. if you get a 3/4 which throws more like a racey half bred you've hit gold but its luck of he draw i'm afraid. good half bred is a little light on pace for some jobs, but all in all takes some beating as a knock about, try-anything all round worker. although some folk might say that some of the more difficult traits which some collies can ha
  16. agree with bosun, make sure dog isnt carrying an injury, sometimes little twinges are not obvious but cause the dog discomfort and need a vet, bone man or soem kind of professional to spot them
  17. i feed my dogs twice a day. they get an hours walk before work in the morning, and i leave them with bones to chew when they get home (i split them up just in case they scrap and once they are finished and ready for sleep the mrs runs them back into the main enclosure together again). i then take them out for at least an hour at night, and they get fed flesh etc when we get back. so they always exercise on an empty belly, and always fill up before they are supposed to settle down.
  18. you're not expecting too much, personally i expect that sort of versatility in my dogs plus more besides (retrieving shot birds, out of water , ratting, etc). i would agree with other posters though that you need to bring the dog up running about in the woods from puppyhood so dodging and diving throgh branches becomes second nature to it. i do a lot of hunting in wooded areas and i prefer a medium sized animal for this, i find them a bit more nimble, although thats not to say that bigger dogs cant run woodland. for me collie crosses are pretty indestructible and take the occasional knock bet
  19. so what about moving to scotland?
  20. fecking hell, what race of degenerates are they? are they all the romanians that have just landed here? was it on location in bulgaria? or are they from a certain northern english city?.....
  21. now i dont watch as much rugby as i would like for the last couple of years so am a little out of touch, but from what i have seen hook should be in the starting line up every week. why isnt he? or am i just woefully out of touch?
  22. make sure you get some bone into the dogs not just flesh. flesh alone isnt a balanced diet, they need bone to get the calcium content for forming and maintaining their own bones. personally i would go for the chicken necks and the lamb
