  1. yeah itis a good book, well worth buying. i have a 20 month old bitch who hasnt shown any signs of a heat yet, my old bitch is every ten months on the dot and the pup is only 6 months, but i've known bitches start at that age. i've had other bitches every 6 months regular and others break down at random intervals to be honest, i work them right through, dont change anything except not take them out where we might meet a male dog, and never have had any problems at all. i've not seen any softening up or drop in fitness in any of my bitches over the years, but saying that most have been
  2. http://www.butchersequipment.co.uk/victorinox-boning-knife-6-15cm-4-colours.html yep i'm tight, but i just use one of these. does all i want and decent enough quality for me. admittedly i'm not using it as extensively as some of you blokes, but might appeal to your wife sussex as they are only £9 and you did say she is scottish?
  3. thats what i thought. thanks chaps
  4. just been on the phone to a mate of mine. there is a small herd of sika on his permission, he normally only shoots a few each year but spends a lot of time just observing them. well, there was a hind sitting up in the forestry for a couple of days not coming out to feed with the others, obviously something wrong so he made a real effort to get a good look and eventually he got close enough to see that she was giving birth! as it happened she didn't pass the fawn successfully as one of the forelegs was folded back wrong and he ended up having to intervene with the rifle. got me to wondering
  5. i have never run dogs with collars and never would.
  6. socks, you want to get one of those hole punches and put some holes through the tongue, that will stop them.....
  7. lovely little pup. just dont be tempted to over exercise her! i wouldnt worry too much about the stay at that age, its really boring for a pup and much easier to teach when they are a bit older.
  8. bugger all rabbits again this year, the few that survived last year have been hammered by the ridiculous numbers of foxes round here. as for hares, never loads round here but always the odd one or two, and i would say their numbers are about the same as they have been or maybe just down a little. funny enough though i have seen a few in places i havent seen for 15-20 years
  9. now and then a dog came upon a fox which would twist and turn and fold the dog inside out, make even a very good dog look stupid. i've seen one or two which really were amazingly clever runners.
  10. funniest thing i ever saw for sale on ebay was an empty jam jar. remember that medium derek acorah, apparently his spirit guide sam was in the jam jar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. i was once ferreting and had a ferret dug well in under some old rubble. was digging for about an hour, much of this time i was lying flat out with my arm down the hole. two coppers turned up and said they had a report from a member of the public that they had seen a man lying on the floor looking unwell and thoiught i'd had a heart attack!!!!!
  12. thank you, i will try a new 50w, if thats no better i will try a 100w cheers
  13. alright i know i'm thick before you lot start, but heres the question. i have just been given an old but good condition lamp, clulite. i've rewired it as some of the wires were a bit loose, but the beam seems just a bit dull. its got a 50w 12v battery in, can i change this for a 100w 12v? or will this damage the battery or blow the fuse or something? i am guessing that a higher watt bulb would drain the battery quicker? its not going to get much use from me to be honest, but nice to know its there as a back up, might even flog it if i dont use it much thank you
  14. i start work at 7.30 am, and get up at 6 each morning to give the dogs an hour walk, i'm lucky that i can easily come home at lunch to let them out, if i couldnt i would get a neighbour or friend to do so. at one time i even paid a local lad to come lunchtimes to let the dogs out. i finish work at 6, and the dogs get at least an hour walk then. into the house with me after that, and stay in all night. i suggest you get that little dog tired and happy before you leave it, and find someone to let it out in the day. also a garage is not suitable unless it has some natural light and airflow. my ke
  15. can you set up a booby trap somehow? to spray paint or something on the little c==t? failing that lock him in the garage until you can get a few friends round.......
  16. why not make an appointment to have a chat with the local wildlife officer? if he sees you are a reasonable bloke i'm sure he has plenty of arseholes round there to be spending his time on, and may be glad that knowing there is one normal person lamping means one less incident to follow up.they can also tell you exactly what the best procedure is, at one time when i used to lamp a lot i used to stop in the local station every week or so and just write a list for the desk sargeant where i would be, never had any bother but that was years ago and times change i know!! if you can save the plo
  17. i would just add that my local firearms officer is very keen that people have some degree of experience before issuing a cert. perhaps joining a local gun club and getting used to simply handling weapons and loading/unloading/firing/zeroing/cleaning etc would be a good idea. also might provide some contacts who would advise and instruct you, maybe even take you out with them if you're lucky. i would recommend doing the dsc1, i think sooner or later they will make it compulsory anyway.
  18. there are loads of ideas and theories and methods to training a reluctant retriever. sometimes its down to a fault in the training, sometimes down to the individual dog. in essence there are really two techniques; rely on the dog WANTING to carry, or MAKING the dog carry. the first would be how most of us train the retrieve, in other words playing with the dog in some way (and that includes tug training) and making the retrieve FUN. the problem with this is that sometimes a dog which makes the choice to carry can also make the choice NOT to carry, and they sometimes develop funny habits (like
  19. plummer wrote the same thing..........
  20. yeah i would definitely agree, beardie crosses do tend to be very high drive, almost reckless, as younsters but have the brain to control themselves more as they grow up
  21. if you cook flesh then obviously it is safe to use fresh meat. i have always frozen rabbits, hares and venison for 3 days and never had any problems, although everybody will tell you different. a dogs digestive system is very different to ours, for a start the stomach acid is so strong that most bacteria are killed by it. also their immune system would be capable of standing up to different infections than ours. i mean, how often do you see dogs eating sheep shit, or rotten old carcases they have found and they rarely even get a loose stool as a result. imagine what that would do to us!
  22. i freeze them for 3 days like i do rabbits, venison and any other wild meat i use. different people will tell you different amounts of time to freeze, but i have always done three days and never had parasite problems like you find when you feed rabbits fresh
  23. Thanks for that mate Interesting read Beast...I`ve got a 1/4 border 1/4 beardie greyhound out of Hancocks mr jones . I`ve met David Hancock but never owned a Hancock lurcher ....she was a gift off a friend and she is a very handy bitch marking /ferreting is 100% true. I have always kept border collie greyhound crosses I don't really see any beardie characteristics in her ...do you think that 1/4 beardie would show any ? the jones bitch i knew was smooth coated and could have been a border cross to look at, bit taller at 24" and perhaps a stronger head but really no
  24. yeah i have thought about this a lot. i always assumed that politicians didnt want to be seen as racists so didnt raise the issue, but the rspca are supposed to be non political so i wondered why they never said anything. this would answer that question if it is true
  25. to answer the original post. i have owned border greys both first cross and line bred, and have also owned and seen border/beardie grey mixtures. one of my current bitches has about 1/8th beardie. for some reason a little bit of beardie blood seems to go a long way, and even those with more border blood often show more beardie characteristics. beardie hybrids do tend to be slower to mature, and a little more wilful during their younger days, they are also very high drive dogs by nature and more solo-hunters than some border crosses, which may need careful handling in order to encoura
