peroxide needs to be very diluted or it will damage the healthy tissue as well. iodine solution such as pevidine is better in my opinion

ive never seen a reverse 3/4 run, so i might be barking up the wrong tree, but what does one of them bring that a first cross doesnt?
-
now dont get me wrong ive had my run ins with the police, and im no fan of the way they carry on a lot of the time; but what would i do if a couple of lads had nicked my animals? i dont have a circle of tough mates to help me out, and at my age and the problems i have with my back/shoulders/knees i would probably get a fecking good kicking for my troubles if i decided to go looking for them. im sure there are others on here who are in a similar situation
-
for me it would be a half cross every time, i seen a couple of border/beardie cross grey which were crackers. great rabbit dogs, and will surprise you with other stuff at times. there are a lot of good three quarter breds about, but some take too much to the greyhound for my liking. i have heard that the alex dog throws some superb pups, although i havent actually seen any at work

inbreeding is fine if you know what you are doing! yes you can fix good ppints as well as bad, but to counteract this you must be prepared to either cull hard or at the very least neuter ANYTHING which is in any way substandard.

Ratting With Lurchers What Do You Think??
beast replied to ian.kellet95's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
great fun ratting with lurchers, and some get really good at the job. the only thing is that some (not all) get hard-mouthed on rabbits after killing rats, especially if they take a few bites in their early days. but good luck to you, gets the dog out having fun, and you too! -
there on this site what, pictures of dog thieves?
-
normally a snapped nail isnt much of a problem, just will be sore if the dog runs on hard surfaces for a couple of weeks
-
i'm not going to talk about retribution on an open forum, but if somebody could put pictures of these c##ts up aat least folks could be on their guard, point them out if they turn up at shows etc?

Does The Shape Of A Dog Affect Its Performance?
beast replied to squab's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
some interesting ponts on this topic. i agree that there are some very good dogs which aren't desperately beautiful out there, and i've seen undershot jaws, cow hocks etc on dogs which were killing machines, but there are certain features which i think are evidently important. i never saw a good worker for example with very upright shoulders, or hocks too straight. i think that the more you study conformation, the more you come to realise just why certain features are considered important. of course to consider conformation and movement can only give you a part of the whole picture of a do -
I Will Be Out For A Long While, Or Maybe Finished ?
beast replied to bird's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
sorry to hear this ray, i done both my shoulders (and everything else besides!) and although they never get quite right again, you learn to live with it. best of luck. -
as long as it isnt too deep, the old salt water treatment should be fine. just be careful if it scabe over too quick as it can seal dirt inside and form an abscess, so you may have to gently debride the scab in the salt water just to be certain. i have often found as well that its helpful to manipulate the toes while its healing to make sure the scar tissue heals with a bit of stretch to it, otherwise it sometimes isnt very elastic and can split more easily. i havent explained that very well but you get my point. good luck.

Wagg is not very good feed, but will loosn the dog up if he's constipated to be honest, dogs can do OK on a variety of different foods, and the same food wont suit every dog anyway. i think the exact balance and ingredients are important for nursing bitches, pups, and adults in really hard work or high performance dogs. for most dogs in light work, i think a general raw meat/bone/veg/pasta and /or top grade complete is fine. personally, if i could get free tripe i would feed it in combination with meaty bones and i think it would be fine.

Will A Pure Grey Be Any Good In The Field ?
beast replied to Kemperz21's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
now, my experience is fairly limited but i'm going to throw in my tuppence worth anyway! i've seen a few ex track dogs run quarry, and whilst they would all bust a gut and were absolutely fearless, this attitude added to blistering pace can create disaster! saying that though, i have seen them take fox no problems at all, and roe, and hares. most were short of wind, but one bloke i knew worked really hard on putting the right kind of distance/aerobic training into his bitch and although obviously nowhere near a saluki, her stamina was okay. i would like to see a proper coursing bred grey -
posting pictures of your dog might be some sort of advert to thieves, but to be honest even if your dog becomes "wanted", its feckers nearby who will know where to find it..... i would also say that just because you DONT post pictures, dont think that makes your dog safe. i've never posted my dogs on here, or spoken much about their exploits, but i've still had people pull alongside when we're walking, and been followed, etc so i have taken precautions to make sure they didnt follow me home. and mine are just cur-looking collie crosses! just be vigilant, lads.

i guess that two breeds which have been resurrected as workers in recent years would be the bedlington and the sealyham. i have read that some breeders took the best beddies they could find and these were their foundation stock, whwhile others outcrossed to lakelands etc. i dont know how the sealyham was recreated. i'm no terrier man and i dont know just how many working beddies or sealhams there are nowadays, or how good they are, perhaps somebody more knowledgeable than me could shed some light on this?

this sounds like low blood sugar. you can try feeding something realy sugary as soon as the shaking starts and it should stop quite quickly. this will let you know if this is the problem. a simple and effective long term solution is to feed some carbs such as pasta a couple of hours before exercise
-
you would have two choices. first, you could outcross to a similar but still useful breed and select from the pups any which were handy and go on from there, but you would be better off to just use the other breed in the first place. secondly, get the most useful specimens you can from the breed you wish to recreate and breed from them, choose the best pups and breed from them and so on, but the chances of getting anything really good would be slim. i think trying to resurrect a breed would be expensive, time consuming and probably fruitless in the long run as nobody has the facilities to do

very sad news, i hope the dog turns up. what worries me with all these thefts is that one day one of the thieving b*****ds will get caught by a dogman and get a fecking good kicking, and the dogman will be prosecuted. but how else are you supposed to protect your dogs if you catch someone at it? the police arent fecking interested. good luck with the search

Bit Of Advice Wanted On First Lurcher Pup Or Pre Owned
beast replied to jack-percival's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
pup every time. yes sometimes a good "made" dog comes up for grabs but usually they are snapped up by friends. and occasionally a dog and its owner just dont get on, but it settles and works with a different owner, but again this is very rare and to be honest (no disrespect) but it usually takes a skilled experienced dog trainer to put right a dog which hasnt got on elsewhere. get a pup, spend every miute you can with it and train it as best you can and it will give you years of pleasure and pride. -
My mates dog was a 3 year old bull x oviously you wouldn't collar a pup man sure bud, i'm just making itclear for anyone on here who might not realise that
-
there is some good advice on here, just remember it is a little baby which was snuggling up to mum/littermates evry night and now is all alone so be a little sensitive and the howling will pass. dont be tempted to go and comfort the pup but also dont go and scold it either. please dont do anything daft like electric shock collar!!!!!

Whats Your Thoughts, Facebook Strikes Again
beast replied to obi2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i reckon that pup is worth a swap. ...........we'll have the pup, seller can get a bloody good hiding. poor little critter. i've no room for another pup, but it almost makes you want to take it from pity doesnt it -
i spent a few years living in norfolk, near the suffolk border, and there were deer of several species absolutely everywhere. however, i dont know if the fact that there were high numbers means that were more hunting opportunities, as there may simply be more hunters exploiting the deer. worth investigating though, i think. good luck.

saluki has become a generic term in some circles, but i'm talking about pures, and admittedly my experience islimited, but i can only write what i have experienced myself i would also say that collies are more than capable of independent thought, they just dont mind if you decide to put some structure or control to it.i guess it boils down to two main things, the uses you have for the dog, and what your own personality is like (can you ahndle it mentally?). i know plenty of blokes who wouldnt give a collie cross kennel space, and just as many who wouldnt countenance a saluki-blooded do
