  1. well i'm thinking now, wasnt that the theory behind the old long netters dogs? never done it or seen it done myself, but used to know two old boys in norfolk who worked on the elveden estate before myxy came, and they used to cross collies to pointers or setters for this work. i guess you might get a collie grey to perform such a task? anyone been down this road?
  2. you can get a real mixture, from almost pure collie looking things to very greyhoundy beasts, and just about everything looking in between. have seen some crackers from this breeding and some useless, just like every other cross!
  3. a lot of collie crosses will try to stalk at times, but not all of them and not all the time. the only thing i have personally seen which might be described as herding was one bitch of a mates which would often go out wide behind its prey if it could and come in from the opposite side to the handler if you get my drift
  4. yep, good chance that wound plus swollen plus hot equals infection. antibiotics to be on the safe side
  5. its just awful, made for middle-aged middle-class housewives who do a bit of rambling now and then and think that makes them "country folk".
  6. for me, a little pup needs to be comfortable and happy, i dont think its fair for it to go straight out all alone. different if you have another dog for company, but you have to be a bit careful as some dogs (and especially some bitches) wont tolerate a pup, especially when it keeps bothering them wanting to play. mine go in a crate indoors, become one of the family, and i gradually get them used to being outside for longer and longer periods. depends on the pup, but most of them i let this process last 2 to 4 weeks. i generally leave them out in the day and indoors all night after this, but t
  7. so did he go round and get it back then?
  8. twistturn, not trying to sound rude but from what youve said it sounds as though they werent properly trained to retrieve in the first place. i consider the first season of full work for a dog to be really just training, and that includes fine tuning things like retrieving dead bunnies and being exactly where i want them at any point in the training schedule before moving on to the next stage. sound s to me as though both of those dogs were started hunting before the fetch was fully trained. i might have got that wrong, only judging by the information you have given, but if thats the case then
  9. Are they comfortable in or around your space ,??if 2 of them are at it , it would appear everything is fine in their ability , it's just the connection of the last 3 foot or so, ever disciplined or confronted for jumping up or similar ?? The dog may be having to change its mind set coming into your zone , from feeling predator to feeling prey like due to lack of confidence in that zone, don't think its that or training really, as got 2 dogs here been trained the same way to bring back, and the older dog as always been the same bring them back ,and will put them on the floor by
  10. the wet summer 2012 fecked the rabbit population round here, and although they started picking up over the summer this past month has seen them sitting out in cover again, as so many of the burrows are flooded. and they are just easy targets for the foxes ( more foxes round here for the last couple of years than i've evr seen before). whats more, as sirius said the rabbits just wont sit out in the water logged fields - its clay round here mostly too. ferretting is out, lamping is out, just trying to beat the foxes at the bushing game!
  11. there are two herds i mostly cull, one is a genuinely wild herd and they average about 65lb, the other is on an enclosed estate and despite supplementary feed in the winter, selective culling to remove poor specimens and general management (worming, mineral licks etc) they only come in around 60lb at best. i can only put it down to inbreeding and i keep telling the estate manager to get a few decent new bucks in, but he cant be bothered. ive got around 30 does in total i still want to take from this herd which shouldnt be too hard, but the wild ones will be very challenging as i would like to
  12. that pup is fine. he should muscle up a bit over the next 6 months or so, but nothing for you to worry about. who says it is too thin, just some mummies outside the school? ask them what the hell they know about dogs. why not print off this page and keep a copy in your pocket to show them.....
  13. warm water if necessary, and really nasty stuff i might use a bit of fairy liquid, but only if i cant get it out with water.
  14. yep, im a long way from where i wanted to be numbers-wise. nice work sussex. whats the average weight for does down your way?
  15. how come i didnt get one then............
  16. beast yeah thats oul sonic, his front top 4 teeth are non exsistent, and hes missing one at the side but he manages to slay the shit outa stuff still http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h283/ld387/lurchers%20only/sonic.jpg here he is after suffering a kick from them fukin ferral horses, the b*****ds.the only good thing is the horses were taken away shortly afterwards and destroyed as they were neglected and no one would claim ownership of the horrid yokes.I went out today and forgot my phone and the camera as I was anxious to get in the land early,i was kicking myself that I had forgotten bo
  17. rugby and cricket for me, football and the ridiculous hype surrounding it just isn't my thing
  18. some dogs take to feather naturally, some never quite get it. get them carrying dead birds as a pup, if you can get out shooting then use the dog for retrieving especially any runners, take them to the local shoot picking up, anything to encourage them that birds are fair game. a lot of dogs dont like carrying pigeons and crows, but should carry pheasant, duck etc a real good bird dog will learn when it is worth having a go for a certain bird and when not to bother, one of my bitches will just glance at a pheasant out on a field, but if she scents one in cover will make every effort to peg i
  19. nice work. was that the dog that got booted in the head by a horse as a pup? or am I getting mixed up?
  20. i think you need to get some advice off black greyhound......................
  21. you be better going back to the da instead of the brother imo. thats something i've heard before. i've heard it said that if you see a good dog, you should use his sire rather than the dog himself anyway. not sure i would completely agree with this, but its an interesting opinion.
  22. dont often see them advertised these days which is a shame. i bet a well bred and reared litter would get snapped up. good luck.
  23. every dog is different, but i would suggest keep on the lead until the stitches are out (about 10 days) then gradually increase exercise. bike work is good as you have a lot of control, and can stop the dog jumping or really stretching out. short runs for a couple of minutes after a couple of weeks of bike work (you can keep pedalling through the whole recovery/fitness programme) and lengthen the running periods over the following few weeks. my ma had one bitch that just wasnt right for around six weeks, but mostly they are good to go after a month or so.
  24. hope those dogs heal up quickly fellas. we ve two curdogs laid up just now, one slashed from arsehole to breakfast time on a bit of old rusty machinery hidden in undergrowth, the other got dragged down the side of an old quarry and bruised all over one side. but as you have said, most ordinary dogs would be dead or crippled for life, these two will be back in a few weeks. so its just the pup and me for the next few weeks!
