yep, i keepmine in runs on the floor rather than raised hutches. lets them and the dogs see each other all the time. also gets the ferrets used to people walking by, i seen ferrets kept in raised hutches which were perfectly tame but never saw humans from ground level, and when taken out for work they would run back down the burrows as if they wrer scared

i've been thinking about tomos gay adoption thread. i am in favour of gay adoption, in fact i think we should all adopt a gay! might be helpful around the house.... "whats that daddy?" "thats the gay" "what does it do?" "songs from the shows" where do i get my gay adoptee from?

theres a young girl who works for me who is a lesbian, not butch or "in your face" or in any way objectionable and you wouldnt guess she was gay. her girlfriend is just the same. they have been living together for some years and seem very happy. i asked them once if they would ever like kids, and they both said it wouldnt be fair on the children, as they would get destroyed at school. ironically i think they both have the qualities to be great parents.

in my experience pups dont howl or whine for no reason, they do it because something is bothering them, or because at some point they have been in a situation where something was bothering them and the howling became a habit, a kind of coping mechanism. boredom, loneliness, cold, there are lots of reasons that can cause this. i dont mean necessarily that there is anything wrong with how you keep your dogs, but possibly the pup had issues before you got it. the thing with a youngster which is upset is to find out why (this is a test for a true dog man) and put it right, not to punish it. yo

seen them take rats, ducklings and once a grass snake about 4 foot long, that took some swallowing!

we normally get cuckoos mid-april. last year was one of the best ever round here, one afternoon i watched 6 displaying and chasing each other from tree to tree and could hear another two. lots of lapwings, flocks of 300+ over the winter and many fields hold breeding pairs. not seen a curlew local. skylarks have decreased over the past 3-4 years though. (i'm talking within a mile radius of my house)

roadwork is the key, although as skycat says puppy feet are softer anyway. i also think soaking the feet is beneficial, twice a day for at least ten minutes, but we have always used a strong salt solution rather than potassium (does that stain their feet brown cecil?)

personally i think that a pup playing with ferrets is agood thing. an 8 week pup wont have any drive to hunt or kill the ferrets yet, and if it is a bit over rough any self respecting ferret will give it a nip, and this isnt a bad thing either ( a nip, not a full-bloded ferret bite!) i have always let my dogs and ferrets become best mates, and never had a problem at work. i actually think its a bonus, and a dog which will grab a rabbit in a burrow mouth with ferret latched to its arse, or even carry a rabbit to me with ferret still hanging off it is better than the dog scared of the ferret and

some good advice here. there are two points that strike me; first remember that it is a pup, and a pup with a lot of sighthound blood at that, so may take quite some time to mature. be patient! second, work on recall. i practically brainwash my dogs to come when called, even the adults i call them over every now and then, praise, then let them go again (NOT put lead on straight away!). practice when the pup is near to you, calm, and not concentrating on anything else. requires time, work and efort, but keep going - you will get out what you put in!! good luck

Has Anybody On Hear Have Or Had A Pup Off Hancock Sired By Merlin
beast replied to fats's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
cant believe that black dog pup is still there. seen a half sister of that dog, was one of the best hunting and all round working dogs i have evr seen. a lot of the pups on his website dont look too clever, but all the pictures of that black pup over the weeks it has been on there have looked really good. get him bought! -
pts ffs.......

when i was a lad i saw a lurcher grab hold of a cat which it killed, but the cat blinded it in the process. for this reason alone i try my best to keep my dogs setady to cats, apart from the legal/moral discussion

that dog really looks the part, i could find some work for him BUT i like the first bitch best out of the three, got some quarters on her. BUT collie crosses are shite. i've owned them best part 30 years, and i only keep them because i dont want to catch anything, i like them getting injured on the awful ground i work on, and i dont care if they are all over-sensitive, hyperactive yappers and jackers

the proposal is a minor amendment, not any kind of review or repeal. most of us will be unaffected. how i see it: there will never be any kind of tinkering with permits, licences etc, perhaps one day the law may be repealed in its entirity and all will be as it was. i think there would only ever be one vote on this in parliamnet, there is so much bad press at stake for mps that they wouldnt revisit it again. for this reason, i think there will never be a vote unless there is a large tory majority, with a leader who is not only strong minded but also has a pro-hunting stance themselves.

at one time i used to drive some of the minor roads round woburn going to work and back, i reckon i averaged one chinese water deer per week picked up and put in the truck off the road. only had two dogs at the time, and they could hardly keep up with the amount of meat i was bringing home. more fallow out where i am now, but rarely find them killed by cars.

Err, no, mate, frankly Though, I fail to see what that's got to do with this pricks music anyway. He didn't write the score to " High Noon ", did he? No but films, music, it's all entertainment. I still watch films I enjoyed when I was a lad, music etc. just cos something is so many years ago, doesn't mean you all of a sudden dislike it. true, but its ok to dislike it because its cliff richard

whats it got to do with the cops? thought they would have more important things to do than try to control what people eat!!!! Unless its a criminal offence to eat badger roadkill now!! seriously, loads of badgers and muntjac dead on the roads round here, not many foxes or rabbits though
-
i thought that after a certain time royalties dont have to be paid at all? wasnt cliff richard kicking off about it a couple of years ago cos some of his awful music was due to be 50 years old or something and he would stop getting paid for it?
