i would put sheep netting and posts all round, what vanman says is true about the strainers. wouldnt bother with barbed wire, its a bloody nuisance, just put plain coil wire top and bottom to tension. pigs often work out that barbed wire doesnt really hurt them if the incentive to get through is big enough. i bet you will find it dead easy to do with the right equipment, and i would suggest you buy as much of the smaller equipment as you can afford as you will only want it again sometime. i would use electric to divide up the ground inside the boundary as required. make sure your gate posts ar

we used to run a few GOS pigs, very good pork especially if you grow them on slowly, at a rate their old-fashioned bodies can cope with, and not try to force them. bred a couple of sows to a tamworth boar, the pigs were equally good eating and grew on a little faster as i recall with no extra feeding to the pures

i want to put a wood burner in my sitting room. there is an existing chimney which is boarded up but as far as i know still functional, and i am told that there is a back boiler behind the fireplace. i'm not sure exactly how its all set up as i havent had the boards off yet, and dont want to start a job which i cant finish! can i simply put a woodburner into the fireplace and run the flue up the chimney, or is there more to it than that?

put some goats on to clear the plants above the ground, sell them on and then pigs to clear whats under the ground, sell them on, you should have enough cash to fence the land. harrow and reseed with rye grass, rest for six months to a year so the sward establishes properly and then you have a nice bit of sheep grazing. couldn't put too many on, but should make a few quid. dont be tempted to overstock, and depending what the ground is like you may be able to manage them in such a way that your outgoings are minimal

the problem isnt with the hand rearing, it is the fact that they havent been socialised properly. with any animal, the trick is not to become a surrogate mother or the animal will imprint to you, and be. come socially confused with its own species. even raising it alongside littermates isnt enough, as puppies will only display a limited amount of social skills to each other. you need to make sure there are adult dogs in the picture which are really important to teach proper social skills to the pups, and put yourself in the background as much as possible, at least until the pups realise they a

Has Anybody On Hear Have Or Had A Pup Off Hancock Sired By Merlin
beast replied to fats's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
im told that since sally has been doing more and the old man has been taking a bit of a back seat, she has been putting more time in with the pups, especially those which are unsold for a while. this is just what im told, i havent been there for many years -
i know feck all about finances, so heres a question for you lot who are a bit more clued up than me. suppose i have a 100k mortgage, and still have 20 years to pay at £500 per month, would it make any difference to put the 20k straight into the mortgage? would it cut down the monthly patments by a lot, or would it mean that it was pated off significantly sooner? or would it make not much difference at all?

Dogs That Don't Make The Grade Or Jack.
beast replied to Dranny GLC's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
dogs which simply cant or wont work in any way are few and far between. i expect my dogs to learn a lot of different skills (ferretting, hunting up, bit of lamping, gun work, trailing shot deer etc) and whilst i have had some excellent dogs, mostly average, and some really quite poor, i have never had one which was crap at everything. ive known dogs bought for hares which werent up to it which became very good lampers, ive known lurchers which became very good gun dogs, etc for me, i will never pass a dog on, and i have always been able to find something which a dog can do to a decent standa- 80 replies

Flip me 2 pups will rare better than 1 pup in a pen on its own again common sense pal, i think we misunderstand each other. i thought you meant "raring to go" as in fired up, but you mean rearing pups might rear together better, but i dont think they train together better

two shark stories you might like: when i was in perth, australia, a fella got killed just a few yards from the shore at cottesloe beach. there was a restauant called (i think) the blue duck overlooking the beach just where it happened, and some old boy in there saw the attack and droped dwon dead from a heart attack. dont know how true that is, but thats the version i heard (great white kills two with one bite!) my grandfather was on a ship in the south china sea during WW1. the boat got sunk by a torpedo, and he was lucky enough to get off alive. he spent 48 hours in the water clingin

i agree, two pups is a nightmare for anyone, unless you are home all day long and can take them each out separately for a good amount of time. i think if somebody new to the game got two pups it would be even harder and they probably would be out of the lurcher game before too long. im not sure that dogs want to be "raring up" to chase anyway, obviously they should be keen and excited but not in a wild hyper state of mind

www.naturapet.com/system/resources/.../H3-2_Amino_Acids.pdf interesting article i found earlier, and written simply enough that even a non-scientific mind like mine can understand it! highlights the importance of getting a diet rich in animal proteins, not cereal/soya etc. the article only deals with proteins, but there is some parallel with other nutrients and the fact that dogs are unable to get all their requirements easily from a vegetable-based diet. i dont think anybody on this forum feeds a vegetarian diet, but be aware if you use dry feeds, and check they are not based too hea

i had never heard of that, but i just googled IMHA and it sounds horrific. good luck with the dog, hope it pulls through

i feed raw meat/bones/fish/few eggs , basically an animal-product-based diet. the only thing i have found with new pups is that if they have not been fed on this diet already then it can cause stomach upsets until they are used to it, so gradually introduce cooked meat instead of dry feed, then cook the meat less each day until the stomach can cope. if the pup is otherwise healthy (just thin) it should fill out pretty quickly. make sure it gets regular but not too intense exercise. make sure the pup has been wormed too. good luck with it.

I Am Definately Getting Soft In My Old Age .....
beast replied to socks's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
socks, i put mine outside when i go to work in the morning, and if there is a frost then i put the heater on (the mrs turns it off if it warms up later on). one thing i've always wondered, if dogs dont get heat, do they grow a better coat to compensate? all my cur dogs have always been fine in terms of dealing with the cold when working despite getting artificial heat -
my parents made evry effort to spend their time with us kids, were quiet and gentle, but when we were out of line then there was a big unpleasant chage to their tone of voice, their body language (especially the old man) and it was instantly clear that we had transgressed. i should add that on very rare occasions we would get a slap round the legs, (i can remember getting one goodun from mum, and the old man once only picking me up with one hand and physically lifting me to the bathroom where a firm slap was administered. and those are the only times. and both times i deserved it. i think

the gamekeeper on the shoot behind my cottage has set up a feeding station for predatory birds (well he sits up for the foxes at the station too, but were talking about birds on this thread!). we have large numbers of buzzards, kites and a few ravens round here, and i have watched considerable numbers of these species feeding on the keepers leftover pigeons/vermin/waste deer guts etc. now i admit i dont know too much about this subject, but does anybody think this idea would help to stop gamebird losses, after all a dead bit of meat is easier to catch than a live bird? or will this encou
