So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?
terryd replied to JohnGalway's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Well I ballsed up with my carrots left them in too long so lots of rot. I planted my spring cabbage too late so they didn't get big enough at least I don't think to survive the winter. My onions were a disaster I thought so I need to get them right next year as we eat a lot. I won't be growing main crops spuds any more just not worth the effort and space but I will be growing earlies and second early Fancy growing more fruit as it is very expensive. Won't be growing nero kale again it seems tough as old boot even if it does look nice. Oh yea toms had loads of rot down to erratic wa -

Oh how times have changed remember it used to be a bit of challenge if you new good ground where the farmer wasnt that keen shall we say. One night me and me cousin pushed our luck a bit two far and the farmer pulled a sneaky. Rough old night good lamping weather but the farmer snuck up the track in his landy with out his lights and crept in the top of the field with it. We were smack bang in the centre and first we new he lights up the whole field and floors it down the hill straight at us. It was wet and quite a slope so at that speed he had no control and as we split up our trusted ploy

Terry, try some carrots kept in sand. Dry the sand off in the summer box it and put it in the shed then just lay the carrots not touching in a layer of sand and cover and repeat till the box is full. More taste when you take them out than frozen carrots. The same can be done with beetroot and parsnip. TC I will give that a try Allan. I have got a few beets in the shed in compost which I have not checked as an experiment . Sand sounds a good plan plus the council are all ways leaving bags of it laying around -

Well I cocked up on the carrots never got around to protecting them so the rot seems to have set in quite bad Dug most up salvaged as much as we can or the wife did rather and got them frozen. Next year I will get them frozen down before the weather gets bad -
nice cheap one to get your started http://tinyurl.com/m58qavw

Long netting can be very efficient and you can do a lot with even a little 25 yarder traditional put in the right place and a few free hazel pegs so not massive outlay. You don't have to have a place heaving with rabbits either if your happy for just one or two rabbits at the end of the night. There is so much more too it than catching rabbits as well. Strolling around in the dark with a net in your pocket and maybe a rabbit or two to take home with every one being completely unaware of your presence is quite a feeling

It was quite simple really I had one as a young lad and he suited me fine and a pleasure to own so I went for the same again. But to my way of thinking for a ferreting marking is the be all and end all and the ability to work thick cover and follow a line to get the bunny to ground. So if ferreting is your thing you can't rule out a bushing type like you will see in the bushing section

makes me hands sweat looking at that I can't handle heights

I had that choice to make early this year and I went for a lurcher to lurcher who is going to make 24-25 inch. Can't fault him really for temperament and hunting instinct but I do feel a bit over gunned as I just wanted a marking dog really so in hind site a little bushing terrier cross would have been more suitable maybe. But I wouldn't change him now I have him

Very sorry to hear that sad but of all the ways to go thats got to be one of the better ones. Out of the blue painless and quick hope I go like that. Not that it is any consolation to you

At the end of the day you have zero control just got to sit back and cross your fingers. One of my daughters don't put a foot wrong got cracking tidy boy friend and one well what a nutter lol. I gave up worrying a long time ago just grin and bare it now a days for a peaceful life until she hits 18 then she will be shown the door unless she wises up

Some shite luck going about for sure. But at least your vets diagnosis sounds precise which is reassuring. Hopefully a full recovery will be had. Also depends how hard you plan to work the dog in the future too I guess for me pottering around with the ferrets would suffice rather than hard nights lamping
