  1. to catch the ones the terrier misses lol atb at i like it but with mr terrier behind it as long as it has a decent honker the rabbit is in the bag it will get pushed to ground again and either netted or killed in no matter how thick the cover Lurchers obviously have there own virtues and good ones too
  2. Had 21 on foot one night with this dog she was a tiny thing and I used to pick her runs with rabbits up against the hedge. It was quite a rough wet old night but we couldn't go wrong. I remember her nailing quite a few in the hedge its self she was really on form that night. As the numbers grew I started leaving them to collect on the way back. Hell of a slog home that night wet right through. She was kept out side but that night she had the bottom of me bed
  3. Terriers don't catch bolted rabbits as such though they can grab a bolter if they are in the right place thats what nets are for

  6. I used to have terriers for ferreting and never lost a ferret but they were educated as pups which is the important bit. This chap was 110% with ferrets and really new the ferreting game what I would give for him now. He got nipped by the ferret as a pup and once or twice as he got older and never retaliated and he was a very game terrier on fox as well so no coward. But if he was in a tight spot in a hedge and the ferret came out by him he leapt over the ferret or what ever he had to do to get out the way. So in my opinion a terrier makes great ferret dog and once they get scent of
  7. My pup is the same takes great delight up the forestry when his in play mode zooming up and down the banks on the track edge scares me to death. I try discourage him or calm him down. But mostly avoid the spots as there is nice tree roots sticking out just waiting for a leg to slide under
  8. me neither I meant as in a bolt or a bit of action. Dog marks soon learns ferret in rabbit out hopefully you know they have it sussed when they give you that look. But if it marks and you move on I imagine it learns the opposite at least in the early years just my thinking
  9. I think until they reach a certain experience level you need to reward the marks every time and even then as much as you can. So basically have a mooch where a mark is not likely not easy I know or as you say take a ferret but again not practical in the evenings. With my terrier I used to ferret some right pain in the ass places on my own rather than drag him away until he got to the point where it was so ingrained I didn't have to worry much. But I suspect a lurcher will be much easier to go off the idea
  10. you can be the best parents in the world and your kids can still turn out a pain in the ass. They all have there own personalities good or bad and just go through phases
  11. Cheers folks more luck than judgement I can assure you Loads to learn onward and upwards and next season I wont have to clear a plot they are all reasonably under control so that will be good
  12. Picked plenty of veg today the daughter is staying in a university village and sharing with others. The kitchen looks like its been nuked so we got her a slow cooker for her room which she keeps chugging away with stews and casseroles so I have to keep her supplied with veg. She has the best smelling room there Gladiator parsnips definitely stick with them next year Need to get me onions sorted next year this years were like marbles but they keep really well unlike a couple big ones I bought from tesco which lasted bout 2 weeks On the look out for some raspberry canes n
  13. What matt said not for the faint hearted having a dog you think the world of jammed up tight showing 8 plus feet on the locator in some fortress of roots and rocks. I used to love it but more of a fluffy bunny man in me old age But yea 20 years ago you couldn't fault a good russel sure there is still some good ones around now
  14. police earned there money today what a horrific days work
  15. Not very good ones but I wish I got a better one of the pup flying over this hump crazy eyed nit
  16. if your a runner you know what a pounding the road gives to the old joints so personally I wouldn't start to young at least not with any distance and build the dog up like you would your self
  17. forgot to ask ok to leave carrots in the ground till needed ? I forget the variety but guessing they will be a main crop one
  18. Just a couple of cabbage and few spouts today the fridge is well stocked at the moment. red cabbage not doing to bad and well ventilated thanks to the slugs plenty of cabbage waiting in the wings broadbeans just about standing up I raised the netting today and I might have to support them good old club root on the veg from today. These had a handful of lime in the holes when planted out and did reasonable anyway but I will try the washing liquid next time as mentioned in this thread by tc be nice to see things reach there full potential
  19. Stupid idea they should come down on them harder not go easier The amount of it that goes on is surprising once you start to mix in them circles.
  20. Try find a place you can get them up against a good hedge/fence they can't get in in a hurry rather than just cover they can hit at speed
  21. You say he is doing well so just carry on as you are one on one time is special no need to complicate matters
