  1. maybe use slack slip and some sort of verbal noise to tell the dog to go so its used to only going when told maybe to start as well
  2. I find it very a interesting topic. My pup is as keen as mustard with a lot of drive so the thought of getting him to put the brakes on when he knows there's some thing in front of him should be good. But he is on sick at the mo so during his rehab will be an ideal time to get a handle on him. I am aiming for next winter hopefully I notice the folks who do train off the lead do it across the board with all the dogs so I guess its doable with any hound with time
  3. I fancy getting my pup to work off the lead I have given my self to next year to do it. Bit of a challenge for me self. After hearing how well others train there dogs I hope to do the same my self. I guess the more control the more pleasurable the experience
  4. do the Dankung tubes detereate much with age have a catty knocking about over a couple of years old thats not been used much
  5. would be nice have would love to see what wild life is about pass through gateways etc. But I thought the good ones were a 100 plus but maybe not
  6. Mine used to be in a hutch in the shed with the dogs lose but the dogs had known them since pups so I had no worry. What works well at home now if the ferrets are in the back yard and the dogs the house so every time they go out for a piddle they see the ferrets so get used to them. I only have a cocker and lurcher pup now a days but it made getting the pup used to them easy. He did used to try get a bit playful to start but just ignores them now trying to pinch bit chicken off the ferret old pic of a little patterdale i had years ago on the other side of the coin I had a lakeland
  7. My terrier would kill mink and he had a wild polecat once but he was perfect with the ferrets. I guess it all depends on the dog maybe some terriers can be a bit trigger happy lol
  8. Very unlikey they just want to get away

    Drink

mmm when i was single I used to run up a tab and hand over me wages on a monday night to the landlord and start again. Was on tidy money at the time too . You know things are bad when you can walk into any local and they give you tab no questions. Luckily I met the wife and now don't drink
  12. Ahh the feathers yea that is a good idea I had forgotten about them
  13. great shooting how you chaps are so accurate is beyond me. I took a shoot at one the other day missed by a mile
  14. Yes Terry had a great crop for a decent period of time should have put some pics on with fruit on. Just net up well as the birds love them. Nice jar of red cabbage. Yea I thought you would get a good crop off that lot My neighbouring plots are full of them but they just let them fall on the floor or the birds get them such a waste.
  15. Raspberry canes came today off ebay but from few miles up the road 10 x Raspberry Canes 'Sugana' Bareroot Primocane Very Large Fruit 12 x Raspberry Canes 'Octavia' Bareroot Summer Fruiting Large Berries Popped them all in a big pot of compost till I get them up the plot on Sunday. Plan to give them dam good mulching of leaves to keep the weeds out. I see you had a cracking patch of canes John in one of the posts did you get a good crop ? Would be nice to get a good crop of them bloody silly prices in tesco Knocked up some pickled red cabbage tonight too. Cover in salt over nigh
  16. to catch the ones the terrier misses lol atb at i like it but with mr terrier behind it as long as it has a decent honker the rabbit is in the bag it will get pushed to ground again and either netted or killed in no matter how thick the cover Lurchers obviously have there own virtues and good ones too
  17. Had 21 on foot one night with this dog she was a tiny thing and I used to pick her runs with rabbits up against the hedge. It was quite a rough wet old night but we couldn't go wrong. I remember her nailing quite a few in the hedge its self she was really on form that night. As the numbers grew I started leaving them to collect on the way back. Hell of a slog home that night wet right through. She was kept out side but that night she had the bottom of me bed
  18. Terriers don't catch bolted rabbits as such though they can grab a bolter if they are in the right place thats what nets are for

  21. I used to have terriers for ferreting and never lost a ferret but they were educated as pups which is the important bit. This chap was 110% with ferrets and really new the ferreting game what I would give for him now. He got nipped by the ferret as a pup and once or twice as he got older and never retaliated and he was a very game terrier on fox as well so no coward. But if he was in a tight spot in a hedge and the ferret came out by him he leapt over the ferret or what ever he had to do to get out the way. So in my opinion a terrier makes great ferret dog and once they get scent of
  22. My pup is the same takes great delight up the forestry when his in play mode zooming up and down the banks on the track edge scares me to death. I try discourage him or calm him down. But mostly avoid the spots as there is nice tree roots sticking out just waiting for a leg to slide under
  23. me neither I meant as in a bolt or a bit of action. Dog marks soon learns ferret in rabbit out hopefully you know they have it sussed when they give you that look. But if it marks and you move on I imagine it learns the opposite at least in the early years just my thinking
