I've taken on several ex race dogs for rabbit work but due I think to age only one turned out any good.I remember watching her not long after I started her unable to work out how to follow the rest of the dogs down a bank on a hot day to get a cool drink in a stream. She just didn't have any idea at the time ,but within 12 months she was going very well ,surprisingly she had plenty of hunt but it did take a long time to build up her stamina to a good level. She went onto be a great catcher ,who had enough brains not to get hurt very often.I bred her to a very good working whippet & those p

I have several of this cross & did also own & hunt pure beagles .I've found that the terrier "input" is that I now have a dog that catches better than a pure beagle ,and the beagle "input" has given me a dog with a better tracking nose than a terrier. So a better alrounder to meet my needs .

Getting near the end for me after this jolly
toolebox replied to beany01's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Sounds like my ferreting, most weeks something such as this happens, you swear you will choke the ferret when you get your hands on it again, but once you see the wee nose and pair of eyes appearing at the hole mouth a flood of relief washes over you & a smile springs to ones face .Then we go and do it all again the next day . -
Anyone else work a springer spaniel out ferreting
toolebox replied to Yorkshire Ferreter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I have two springers( A bitch & a dog) which I use either hunting up or behind the long net ,they are certainly a keen handy breed -
Great pictures ,those wee dogs are worth their weight in gold.

How did you go ?

With teeth or tusks as they are known leads to both personal and dog damage ,its a true test for any dog .

I bred one ,I owned both parents who were good dogs in their own right .I kept back two ,a bitch & dog ,the bitch was small about 21 inches and the dog made 26.I had to put down the bitch at a year old due to liver problems & the dog lasted till he was about 3 ,when he snapped his neck at a rabbit hole .What I found was he was faster over longer ground than my straight whippets but could turn quicker than a greyhound .He was one of the best dogs I've owned ,he had the heart of a lion ,speed of a rocket and the strike of a snake ,he was a sight to behold in full flight .RIP whip

I think that very wise, owners do get caught off guard, dogs are after all really wolves underneath that fur ,no matter what the size or breed.I run a 20 strong bushing pack of mixed breeds & there's always issues within the pack which requires careful management . Nothing is ever black & white with dogs.ATB

CRAZY FERRET STORY IN PAPER..IN IRELAND..LOL
toolebox replied to Saluki246's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I wonder why the two ferrets just up and died? -
Yes 1080 is commonly used on the bigger stations but no where high public use areas. Its applied via aerial drops by chopper by the ton , a practice that's very unpopular with the public as its non target and kills dogs months even years afterwards.

The new strain K5 as its being called is set to be released in march this year in NZ but we have been warned best knock down result will be 30/40%.The remaining 60% will start to breed kits that will be unaffected by k5 so the cycle begins again . This is a far cry from the results of the RHD release about twenty years ago when it blew down 90% of the rabbit population. At this present time due to a number of dry winters we now have a huge population of rabbits that have grown immunity levels in the high 90%.Rabbits can now be seen sitting out in high numbers from most main roads .

My greyhound x whippet was abit of a mad man as well ,but could he jump ,its almost like he was flying ,his keenest to get the job done was in fact his undoing, as he broke his neck at a rabbit hole .I sadly miss him even though its been 7 odd years ,I doubt I will ever get another one of that cross .I bred and owned both his parents, whom were also very good dogs ,both long gone now as well.(never forgotten). These days I do alot of "dogging " in heavy cover or ferreting and either a whippet or whippet x best suits my needs .I do have a need at times for one big fast dog.For that purpose I have

Sorry mate I ment zip.I can see the hairy coat on above picture .I once bred a whippet to a greyhound bitch and the off spring were deadly rabbitters and hare catches .
-
Another GREAT watch ,ferreting is something one never gets sick off no matter how often we go .A good hard working ferret that's easy to handle is truthly worth their weight in gold .What breed is the brindle bitch " cass" ,straight whippet ?

Hi there, very interesting ,are mink normally black in colour and are they normally hard to breed?
-
Its a interesting subject ,I owned a HMR & found it to be a great tack driving caliber.I shot alot of rabbits with mine but also found it could be unreliable in the wind & being a magnum round LOUD even when a suppressor was fitted .In stating this Id still buy another as they are a great killing round for rimfire .The case is based on a .22 mag round necked down to .17 ,even the mack .17 is a step up from the normal .22 & are also a great killing round .

I enjoyed the video .I've been shooting them for a living in New Zealand for a very long time so Id like to offer this up , I at times wonder why some of you guys fiddle about for a age trying for a head shot yet I've seen a number run off wounded after such a shot as ,the margin for wounding a animal is much greater with a head shot than a bullet into engine room(chest). The target in this area is a much bigger one .The killing zone in the head is in fact a very small area and could lead to animal suffering a very long and painful death after having its jaw broken unable to eat ,I dont for

Feel for your loss mate, its gutting when we lose one ,and yes we form a relationship with our wee hunting buddies, they are never forgotten. -
