  1. Looks like a great days sport,in a great spot ,there's something about the use of ferrets ,long nets and a dog that NEVER gets old something that keeps us coming back day after day !
  2. I've hunted a number of pure beagles on rabbit pest control & found a terrier x beagle to suit my needs better .I have 3 of this cross ,they stick like glue once they put up a rabbit in heavy cover ,that's what I require ,I find they are better at finding a rabbit than some of my terriers and are better at catching one than my pure beagles were however I do have a foxy bitch (type of JR here in NZ ) that's sticks & catches just as good . I also have a spaniel x JR who's a very good hunting bitch . A great dog doesn't know how its bred nor does it care ,its only knows its a dog and it
  3. I do eat the odd rabbit myself ,but most people don't bother with them ,they can be taken & sold either for eating or pet food but the paper work required is a night mare to get and rabbits cant worth much anyway .It sounds crazy and wasteful but I only pick up enough for my ferrets and a small number to eat if somebody asks for a couple ,the rest are just left where they fall or thrown into a hole in the ground . I ferreted a 4 hole warren about as big as a dining table that had 32 rabbits of which most were adults ,another large truck sized rock gave me 34 ,I entered a pair of ferrets 7
  4. Here's some back ground to the problem ,rabbits when they live in suitable ground in NZ, BREED a lot ,with no natural enemies (apart from man) . We don't have the population of hunters to control them.We hammer them with just about every possible tool you can think of ,yet they keep building up . While we don't have mexi RHD was brought in from Australia about 15 years ago and it blew down the rabbit population over night to such a level that it was very hard to find a rabbit however they have been building up ever since as they have build up resistance to the disease . Due to number of fac
  5. I'm new to PCPs ,in fact I've never owned a pellet gun untill about 3 months ago .In New Zealand air guns have a small following but due to a new pest control contact on a high public use Golf Course I decided, after watching hours after hours of air rifle videos to buy one .I looked at a number of models and brands & finally decided on a FAL air arms 510 pcp.in .22 cal . I topped it off with 3-14 x 40 hawk scope. Using air arms Diabolo field 16 grain pellets ,gives tight groups on targets and allows heads shots to be taken on rabbits at up to 60 yards .I also added a Q Tec moderator. On
  6. That my friend is a much over looked fact of importants,I love a busher with plenty of noise ,it can drive a bunny out of very heavy cover ,one that nomally wouldnt break out .Im also glad to tsee this Topic back on track ,getting a dog out hunting day after day is just as important as breeding ,over half my bushing dogs came from town ,unwanted by their owners .Most have been out on hunts over the last number of years where 1,000s of rabbits have been taken that sees them become very good at their job ,remember a dog doesnt know its good looking or a "show pony " nor do the care .
  7. Our Type of boar reaches no where near the size of the Russian boar ,a real big one found here is about 250lb - 300lb,anything over 200lb is considered a trophy .Once we heard the bail (barking ) or the battle we rush headlong up hill ,in somecases mountains to arrive as quickly as possable before the boar does either or both of two things ,fight or flight, wounding a dog or several dogs then escaping .At times the dogs have cornered a good tusker under a heavy tight black berry , gorse or pine tree thinings found in huge pine forests & you cant see the hog till you are only a couple of fe
  8. Yes I know a UK guy that reports that Uk boar are building up in numbers but its a shame they cant be hunted via dogs .Perhapes my point has more to do with the dogs NOT knowing but they quickly will work it all out ,a dog can REALLY shift when its got a 100kgs boar intent on doing it major harm, racing up its backside lol
  9. A wild boar is a very smart animal ,much like a dog ,they leave the dog in no doubt via body langage & signs that it means bussiness ,I think any thoughts some of you have of youre dogs rushing in blindly are simply unfounded .The wild boar can do alot of damage in a short period of time & youre dogs will know that ,if they dont they soon will .We hunt them most weekends in NZ ,have had a number of dogs killed & received several rips ourselves .

    As A Team

Dogs are very good at working what they are best at ,a tall fast dog just cant build up much speed in heavy cover unlike a small terrier whos closer to ground level .If youre lurcher went in with the terrier it would fail to see any rabbits bolted ,a good team where every body knows their job always = more game in the bag .
  11. Offen its not so much the message as the tone its delieved in that counts ,you can always get youre message across without being rude or upsetting anyone and after all no one knows Nathans intentions on this litter ,Joe never bothered to ask ,he could have hunting homes lined up or he could have himself caught the life long bug of ferreting ,something we NEVER get sick of ,theres just something about it ,that draws one back day after day .Im leaving in the morning for two long days of payed rabbiting ,most of which will be ferreting using either a lurcher or and the long net ,I cant wait even
  12. Well said Nathan, far too many of these type of people lying in wait ,ready to pounce out there ,their posts help no one, they sorta remind of a hawk waiting on a fence post ,watchin & waiting .
  13. Ill take the time to point something out to you.... no one should have a problem with anyone disagreeing but thats not the only thing you did here, you plainly turned to name calling trying to belittle someone elses point of view by putting them down, thats something thats just not needed on these sites. Might I suggess since these hand shy ferrets were given to you ,you have no idea at all how they were handled ,perhaps they had some major biff, like any thing theres always a balance ,a couple of times usually does the trick and hasn't as of yet ,after years of keeping ferrets caused any of mine
  14. Well excuse me Mr know all But it does work in most cases & theres no need to be insulting just because you dont agree with some one elses point of view ,if any my ferrets kits try and bite I do as I stated and they quickly stop, realizing its not wanted behavior .Because you don't believe it will work you without doubt would of NEVER tryed it so you at best ARE only taking a guess ,it would fail & will only make the ferret fear hands and bite more is nothing more than nonsence .Its worked well for me over the years & once broken in and handled well,my ferrets usually stay that way
  15. Get hold of him when he trys to bite ,tell him no in a loud voice and fick the end of his nose HARD ,works after the penny drops with them and they know you can return the pain x.
  16. They poison 1,000s of Has but still rabbits build back up quickly and within a couple of years are found in HUGE numbers again,at one time a mate & I ferreted, wired and longnetted just on 500 for two days just mucking around really .
  17. Thats intersting guys, our rabbits here in NZ breed all year round ,slow abit during the winter but theres that MANY of them we just carry on ferreting all year The young are generally born out in the open in a short nest hole ,hang around cover till they are about 1/2 grown before they are found in any warrens so its not a real problem.
  18. I think there are without some very clever people out there ,this is a cracker of a idea ,Im going to give it ago ,thanks for shareing .TB.
  19. I wondered if we could have this post of Tcs pinned at the top of the "longnets" page ,as Im sure its going to be a great help to anyone that finds a hole or two in their Longnets that need repairing ?
  20. Those stick piles can be very hard work for the dogs to shift a rabbit out of ,the branches pile down tight & most rabbits are alot smaller than the average terrier .It looks VERY wet there .
  21. The foxy side tempers the beagle side down quite alot ,I like to view the cross in this way ,I find that a foxy is a better rabbit catcher than a beagle but a beagle is a better rabbit finder than a foxy ,so this cross can give the best of both breeds .They generaly have a better nose than a straight foxy and are quicker than a straight beagle & not as "pigheaded ".
