  1. Just a quick up date ,in general the rabbit population has blown out in alot of places now ,its higher than its ever been ,its nothing to see several hundred sitting out feeding in fields come evening .On this golf course I'm still able to take 30-50 rabbits on my monthly trips ,most are shot at night and I think the tally stands at well over 2,000 off 104 ha now.My shooting has steadily improved as I & the s510 have become like old friends.Sometimes I clean miss, but now not often .I did a nite shoot at a local cemetery where between two air guns the tally was 312 rabbits in 6 hours ,a
  2. Given some time I'm sure they will get it all worked out ,we live in a ever changing world ,one full of daily developments ,all it takes is a fresh idea .
  3. That's what I use & even go one step further ...I use a all wire cage during the heat summer, its in play now ,filled with plenty of straw so the ferrets can burrow down to keep out of the wind as it just sits on my flat deck behind the dog boxes. Yes atm new Zealand has in parts ALOT of rabbits in fact Id say populations are at a 20 year high.In the dryer areas of central otago its not uncommon to see several hundred rabbits feeding in the fields as dusk sets in .Its a huge problem ,we don't have seasons ,we don't have limits ,the hubble rabbit is regarded as a super pest
  4. A ferret can NEVER have too much air flow ,they over heat and can cook in a few minutes very much the same as a dog in a poorly ventilated box .I'd much rather have too much air flow than not enough as the ferret has its very own coat in the form of fur to help keep it warm .
  5. Like most breeds that are owned & bred out of purpose where instincts were really intense once, the sad truth is that's not wanted in a lapdog/non hunting pet ,they breed away from that & there lies the problem .Within a short period an entire breed temperament vanishes.
  6. Including the guts ? sorry if I appear to lack knowledge on the subject but I live in New Zealand .
  7. I was thinking about looking at one of these units to buy ,has anyone had /has one .I plan on mounting it on the scope of my Air arms 510s in .22 and my rimfire .22 for rabbit control.Any advice or information on the operation would be great.and would it do meet my needs ?
  8. Its something Ive noticed but Id like to ask, why don't you guys field dress the rabbits as you go ? I see a lot of pictures of rabbits at the end of a days sport ungutted ,it seems a waste as at that stage they wouldn't be good table food .Unremoved Rabbit guts fills with gas & makes the animal smell bad even if it's being kept for ferret food .
  9. Its times like this ,that the "real deal " people of the working dog world shine out ,great offers from great people ,its outstanding in a time of need.
  10. I've owned two ridgebacks a number of years ago without problem ,don't know if that statements MEANS any more than stated ,I think is dangerous to base the whole breed on examples of a VERY low % of unwanted behaviour or attacks ,any dog is capable of attacking a person, big or small .Over the last number of years there have been reports involving pit bulls or pit mixes that have badly damaged a child in attacks but I've owned a number ,with any problems ,Im sure there are plenty of other breeds that have done so yet its never attracts the attention of main stream media .I bet I could find,
  11. Do you guys not use sand toilet boxes ? I have several placed in each cage ,normally they are either old oil or dench containers cut in half ,these when filled with dry sand catch all the piss and shit and only require cleaning and the sand replaced every few days ,once the boxes get dirty & wet the ferrets will go else where to toilet. Its their piss that stinks like hell that also brings the flys around .
  12. Seems we have traveled off subject now but the most common breed of dog thats involved in dog bites in Nz is the ......lab .....simply because they are by far the most common breed found here .IIs dangerous to make a call based on a couple of examples ,not every staff or pitbull born will want to kill the neighbours pom on sight without a reason IF it has a good owner, one that has taken the time to place leadership into its training and keeps it under control. To be truthful I can't understand why the working /hunting dog world is never far from the BS,people judging and commenting with stat
  13. Even in bad weather, some ferreting is always a enjoyable day on the hill, grand sport with good company....cant beat it !!
  14. Laughing my nads off at this reply walshie! Lol . I don't know much at all about ridgebacks, but they don't look like your typical african type of dog. Were they developed by european settlers from the dogs they took with them? The short answer is yes. There's allsorts in their blood. It was Dutch settlers who took their bloodhounds, great danes, greyhounds and other breeds with them to South Africa. The locals had a partly domesticated hunting dog that happened to have a ridge. A mixture of these became the early ridgeback. Later on it was tweaked with other breeds to produce the
  15. I thought the RRB is indeed a "hunting breed",NOT that any dog knows what it is nor does it care ,looks count for jackshit ,its normally the owner who talks about how good the dog is ...while the dog does the task required of it and says nothing ..... .I have and use a good number of dogs while I'm out working ground for rabbits/hares and when somebody I meet mentions you have alot of dogs out atm my reply is always the same one ..............no I have a team out today
  16. I agree ,every ferret has a different nature & temperament, over the years we have a couple of REAL biters, these days Id rather put my valuable time into a calm even temperament ferret .Those ones are joy to handle and work ,without the hassle of a biter, plus I like my grandsons to handle & pick up the ferrets while out working so a hard bitter would simply spoil the day out for them . ATB hope you can fix the problem .
  17. No I certainly wouldnt ,& in the dog world there lies the problem ,years ago if a dog was bred and kept to do the job of filling the catch bag & it failed ,the owners didn't breed the damn thing ,they got rid of it .looking good meant nothing ,so to all those that are still working & testing their dogs I tip my hat to you sirs ......may it long continue .All over the world we dog workers & sports persons are getting hammered by good doers who have no life skills & think their meat just turns up to a butchers shop from outa space .we need to stand our ground .Enough is enoug
  18. In America the reason game cocks are euthanized is because they were going to be killed by being pierced with sharp spurs if they were used in cockfighting. Fair enough. The humane society kill them by giving them a lethal injection into the breast. The game cock dies peacefully. FFS DD educate yourself man. In some counties owners make a living from keeping ,breeding & fighting their birds ,these people & their birds are looked upon with pride ,who are we to judge in the above case the birds ended up dead anyway. All over the world animals and birds are chased and hunted ,eg
  19. I found myself in the same postion after buying my air rifle which also has a full barrel shroud and built in mod ,the guy in the shop told me not to bother getting the after factory mod at the time .I didnt notice that it loud in fact I thought it was nice and quiet but found after several trips to my permission when I had shot one of several rabbits sitting out together, the others would move off, once they heard the report ,so I started to look up you tube at videos showing the type of my rifle firing with and without the extra mod even though I wasnt 100% sure I decided to buy one .What I
  20. I found myself in the same postion after buying my air rifle which also has a full barrel shroud and built in mod ,the guy in the shop told me not to bother getting the after factory mod at the time .I didnt notice that it made any level of noise at all, in fact I thought it was nice and quiet but found after several trips to my permission when I had shot one of several rabbits sitting out together, the others would move off, once they heard the report ,so I started to look up you tube at videos showing the type of my rifle firing with and without the extra mod even though I wasnt 100% sure I
  21. Well the "honeymoon " is well and truely over this trip I took the low total of 30 rabbits ,most were ferreted & netted .I did get some under the lamp you the huge tallys are long gone on this golf course what is left are now light shy and we all know each other well at times Im caught short at other times I get a rabbit ive been targetting for a while ,it just depends on a lot of factors. I did however take my AA 510s around to a friends place(lives out of town) to show him ,he took a couple of shots over a creek, into a sand bank ,then just as he remarked we should see a rabbit ...he d
  22. Nice going, could I suggess a rethink on fitting the mod, rabbits learn quickly and being quiet is very important .......after a few trips these rabbits just like all rabbits will know once they hear anything thats not nomal to run & hide .
  23. Nice to a good dog working ,just letting that do the talking.... instead of the owner yapping on about how its bred ,lines and the usual B/s .
