The dog routed this brown hare out one of 6 for the day and ran it up and down the ridge till I shot it as passed me .A very hot day and too many hares only drains the energy out of the dogs .Most get away as the dogs normally know if they are going to get a result and quit after a short race .The dogs caught another 3 rabbits iand ran another into a hole under a native vine in the gullies below the worked paddock. The dogs atm aren't very fit due to a 6 week lay off over lambing however given a week or two of work and they will be once again field fit.

I wait until snowy #6 returned to the surface and went off to action the second of the pair of rabbits the dogs had run into one of two holes and set snowy to work once he had tidied up the buck and since the remaining remaining two dogs had also returned with some bloody on them. We hunted out the gulley and climbed back to the truck. As we had to pass close to the first hole i sent " Happy" to retieve the rabbit the two dog had dug up and as excepted he returned with a doe .Then it was on to the next spot a worked up paddock with a gully running along its length at the bottom of the hil

Id take a proven field worker as a stud any day ,pity the pure bred dog world has gone half mad ,only yesterday i saw a add for JR puppies stating " these pups are not working dogs just pets & great for cuddles on the sofa .....WTF ....these breeders should be shot with a ball of their own shit..... along with bloody show dog breeders ....

The lovely local rolling countryside of eastern southland ,I had a reported rabbit living on this face above a road ,the very road I happen to live on ,so I actioned it this morning after the first attempt failed yesterday due to a black bird warning all that I was about .I wasnt keen to use any of the dogs here atm due to a stock truck coming and going all morning carting cows from their winter block ,that along with some sharp corners before and after this area ment that a dog unsighted could be run over .I value all of my dogs so think carefully before I start work ,once things are starte

This is the type of country I hunt local ,the rabbits have been hounded non stop for years so they know to keep out of sight .One of their habits is to stay above ground as much as possible ,hiding in the thick faces of solid gorse or down in the rubbish at the bottom of gullies and tree lanes .Once they are found they will run down or up as fast as possible then sneak back in the ole double back trick ,if that fails they then go to plan B and race into a hole or under a shed ,some hell hole that makes it as hard as possible for the wee small dogs or ferret to shift or kill them .Around or

I call him billyboyo ,real name is billy barton & I know him well .After arriving in NZ he took a small number of jobs including staying on a subantarctic island ,his role was hunting down any remaining rabbits on the island after several poison drops .It was interesting to Billy for the first couple of months but staying in huts ,clothes boot etc still wet from the day before got old but he hung in there for a year when the project ended ,no rabbits were found so it was boring for the two man ,two dog team.He arrived back in nz after making good money that you cant spend down there &am

Lets see them old fashioned whippet/collie ferreting dogs

Sire - working whippet Dam- collie/lab pictured at 5 months old. As expected she turned out quite heavy ,but I really only bred her as a later brood bitch to have dogs by some of my faster running dogs .She is a keen worker always out there hunting in cover .Due the dry areas rabbits favour in nz .these usually incudes huge wind brown trees. I like to have my running dogs with a thicker leg ,fine legs hitting a hard baked branch or root at speed can only out have the one outcome, given that my dogs are broken in hunting these areas, accidents can & do happened ,Id rather -

3 days in hospital ,the dogs were not the only ones on the receiving end of a boar .Porky lay in wait after I used the knife and as I reached down he made his moved and he very nearly bit the end of my finger off ,looking down and seeing the bone sticking out and the fresh hanging buy a bit of skin ,makes one value the dog patch up kit we always carried .A quick patch up job and a few hours and pigs later as a after thought I called into a small town to see their Doctor ,who then MADE me turn around & travel back a hour to the hospital ,they are expecting you he said ,I went to comment &

The black & white bitch was a common cross used here ,bull/cattle (collie)greyhound & the wee tan dog was a bull /cattle .The bull can be any of the following ,boxer ,bullterrier ,bullmastiff ,or pit bull ,they are all just referred to as bull when they are included in the make up .I used to run really hard dogs that would hard hold or die trying & over 40 odd years of pig hunting I only had half a dozen dogs killed.A dog that ripped the ball sack of a big boar was highly prized as it was always a good stopping dog on a run away boar and run they did because their life depended

The huts are no longer free to use and only the ones on the most popular tracks are maintained ,alot have been removed .Doc is one of the if not the most hated government departments ,with its use of 1080 ,the bullshit & lies has to be seen by outsiders ,they dont give a toss about the game animals & would rather shoot them & leave them to rotte on the mountain as they are doing so atm with Thar. If I happen to stay in one of OUR huts ,paid for with tax payer funds I never buy a hut ticket but write on a piece of paper what I think of them also informing the reader I wont be payi

STUPIDITY; has taken over in NZ no they do huge amounts of aerial drops of 1080 ,total madness , there are only less than a handful of DOC hunters mostly on goat work, most use goat dogs ....around and around we go learning nothing from the passed .
