He was very lucky not to break his top joint ,it looked ugly as I saw it happen and my first thought was given the amount of screaming he had broken his leg but it seems he's much tuffer than I think.

Bloody hell hes done it this time .Jett hit the square end of a huge log lying in the paddock while chasing a rabbit at top speed.Contact was on the area of the top of shoulder, hopefully he won't be out for too long .

I traveled a total of about 5 miles from my home today ,getting out early as the forecast was for a hot day.^ Total was 10 rabbits ,all bushed and caught by the dogs for not much more than 3 hours .One rabbit had been reported sitting out from a short gullie of gorse and a huge heap of branches all from when the farmer cut down some huge trees. As soon as I arrived at this spot the dogs had a chase happening. The rabbit shot up hill and then doubled back all under the cover ,then unseen it sneaked across a small paddock and under the neighbour's house .This is a small holding and one of only

I like the ruff coat of the borders however they are very expensive here in New Zealand.

I tend to hunt a certain way ,perhaps its not for everybody but it suits myself and the dogs I run .When I go up to the golf course in central ,most of the day time rabbits I get are hiding either in holes, huge rock faces or in long grass where they can slip away hopefully undetected .No firearms can be used during daylight hours ,but under the cover of darkness I can use my pellet rifle .Alot of the dogs pictured are long gone ,but still fresh in my mind .

Running one out improves the dog ,one rabbit caught as above is worth ten flushed out to other dogs waiting on the out side .He did well .

This old fella was what I term a "reported rabbit" one that had been seen by the farmer above a thick face of tight rubbish that lay above his duck pond which was ,alongside his newly sown grass paddock. He didn't want holes dug in newly worked ground so this was a important rabbit to remove.I caught a 1/2 grown one above this track but I doubted it was one I was after.I had checked just about every where till the dogs then worked up along a tree lane that had flax growing along one edge & it was there that the dogs flushed a big rabbit from some of the flax .The rabbit headed down hill

Hi Sheepchaser its a full time paid job over 170 farms totaling 100,000 acres .How lucky am I ?Finding the rabbit or rabbits is the biggest challenge, they have been hammered no stop for a 100 odd years so they are sharp and have staying out of sight down to a fine art.Once found & flushed its game on !

Both these young beagle x foxy bitches are now running well,The one to the left I sent up to a friend in Central Otago who was short of a worker & the other one I kept .Sally has turned out to be a hard working busher ,and has the lovely nature of the beagle .

A couple of 2 week old males out of a litter of 4 ,some will be kept back as this is going to be the last time I breed this cross as the Sire and Dam are getting on now .Beagle x foxy .I usually keep a pup that has the brindle face cheeks as they seem to start early and are easy to break in .

During the period I kept pig dogs ,I had a bull lab greyhound mix ,who id bred and who came back to my kennels when he was 4 years old. The lad that had him said while his sister and boyfriend were mucking about throwing a stick for Tyson he leaped up the grabbed the BF arm.Tyson was a big very strong dog who was more than happy to take on the biggest of boars but i didn't trust him around strangers, more of a feeling in my gut .I was always on edge when I met anyone while hunting on the hill ,my first move was always to recall the dog and tie him up, Tyson would stare at the person and give

While chasing a rabbit around a woodshed i heard Jett howl out for a good period of time ,this had me thinking he had perhaps broken his leg ,but after I called him to me I saw that he had run into something sharp like a the edge of a shed iron .He had some damage in the form of some cuts in the middle of his forehead .Could of been a lot worse, but I could see the bone beneath red raw. He appeared to be ok and this was confirmed 5 minutes later when he T boned a bolted rabbit .Pictured a couple days later just before the scab was cleared off by wet grass .

I've only viewed the breed via utube but they are a very impressive breed ,I'd like to see a straight cross with a greyhound or whippet working on rabbits .

Oh there are two packs of a total of 15 out at any one time ,day about however there are always some that are on R& R ,that includes feeding pups or on heat, about apart from two really good dogs that tidy up and mistakes the up and comers make untill they have toned their own skill set.Once they have can do the basics I will take them with one of the better dogs for a day so they are given a better chance to step up. Its a matter of showing them that they can do it ,one rabbit single handed is worth 25 in the company of others .Locally the rabbits never make their holes out in the open

Total for the 7 hours was 7 rabbits and a hare none came easy and come Monday the team will back out there at another spot on yet another farm.Golden days spent in the company of my 4 legged friends is always highly valued.

Yes I did at one stage I had 6 pure beagles but after a number of health issues I decided to move away from them to a beagle x Foxy (a type of terrier, much like the American Rat Terrier) of which I have 5 of different ages & a 4 strong litter of 2 week old pups. The sire is 50% beagle 50 % terrier as is the Dam .I usually like to keep the ones that have brindle on the face cheeks ,they can be started young and are very easy to train up .
