  1. Foxes are f*** all use when you catch them anyway. Pelts won't sell these days, they taste like shit and they surely smell like it too. Why have a dog that gets itself messed up to catch them these days. There's plenty of better stuff about than foxes.
  2. Agreed. The vet should have shown you how to wrap it if that's what he thought was needed.
  3. If the vet won't stitch and says to wrap I'd say put Hydrogel on, then a non stick pad, then wrap with vetwrap. Not too tight to cut off circulation but tight enough to hold skin that's left down to the muscle. Check/change daily and stock up on pads and gel because you'll be at it for a while until the skin sticks itself down. If you keep it clean and look after it I'd say the dog most likely will run again but as said above, it'll take a long time.
  4. The overnight stay doesn't really sound necessary but then again a lot of vets would have charged much more than 90 quid. Good luck with it healing. Shouldn't be too long.
  5. Couple of inches further back and he'd of been in REAL trouble Terry!
  6. If it's bad the vet may put a stitch or two in it. In my experience the success of stitching this type of cut depends on whether the dog is the type that'll leave the stitches alone if they're covered up. Some dogs pull off any covering and bite the stitches out. One of mine just had a badly cut toe pad which I glued. The glue had to be re-applied every couple of days for the first week. It's now 3 weeks and the top of the cut (inside of the toe) is closed but the bottom (where it goes through her pad (has still a way to go). I'm wishing I'd gone and got a stitch in it now as the bitch is a t
  7. For anyone interested in the writings of Colonel David Hancock, this site - http://www.davidhancockondogs.com/ will be of interest. Look in the archives, linked on the left side of the home page.
  8. I'd like to see that lump beat greyhounds over 150 yards.
  9. That'd do me Ginger, who wants to eat foxes or rats anyway .
  10. https://www.donedeal.ie/dogs-for-sale/classy-lurchers-/13480596 1/4 3/4 but some nice looking pups there if that's what you want. Just a shame they're half strangling the parents for the photo. They'd look better if they were posed naturally and shot from (their) shoulder level.
  11. It crops up on a regular basis on sites such as this that folk are reluctant to live with the temperament and nuances of a Collie bred jukel Phil. Id not own a lurcher that was not Collie infused now,or better still a lurcher that was not Collie influenced in its ability in the field and its Collie traits. Right on,... can't beat having a couple of sulky snappish Jackers around the place .
  12. If she's stock broken in Wales I'm guessing she's had plenty of exposure to sheep too. Sounds like a good deal for someone
  13. Socks - if half the lurchers at a working dog show worked I'd be surprised, and if the ones that did work caught half of what their owners said they did, then there would be nothing left in the British countryside for genuine lads to catch, lol. And if the ones that DIDN'T work caught half what their owners said they caught there'd be nothing left too .
  14. and while he's still young, recall - when you're out walking with him sneak off a short distance then quietly call or whistle to him. As soon as he looks around you run off and when he catches up play with him. Young pups hate to be left behind so it's easier to teach recall then. Teach him to respect livestock before he's big enough to do damage or hopefully to need too harsh a correction. Teach what he enjoys learning and what can be taught as a game. If you've someone with you and he knows recall then your mate can hold him while you run off calling and you hide. He has to find you. That

  16. Now I'm going to sound like a right wimp but personally I hate killing anything. I agree with Johnny Boy68 that it should be done efficiently and with respect and I'm quite good at killing things, whether neck breaking or with the knife. People I know who keep chickens, ducks or geese often call on me when they need some killed and dressed because they know I'll do it properly. Everything wants to carry on living, probably even plants if we but knew it, but as Johnny said, it is part of the process and I like meat and believe that wild game has a better life than a lot of farmed animals do, e
  17. As the lads are saying, get to a good vet and get an xray. I know it's gutting at the start of the season but these things happen and hopefully your dog will recover well.
  18. Ignore the yelping and carry on, being v. careful not to actually hurt him. Do a little bit regularly and every day hold him and pretend to do some, even if it doesn't need doing. Don't try to reassure him or he'll think there's something to be scared of. Just be business like and get on with it. He'll get used to it.
  19. You'll have the wrath of Keighley on you if you're not careful.
  20. And in the exchange and mart before the shooting news existed.People have always wanted to have an idea what was in their dogs and sellers have always said what was in them, even if it was sometimes a bit fictional. It's nothing new and if you've been into lurchers for 35 years I don't know how you've missed it. I bought my first collie cross before "Hancocks Lurchers" even existed and a popular type then was deer/grey x collie grey.
  21. Fair enough but it wouldn't be worth it to me as I rarely lamp more than 2 or 3 hours these days. I no longer enjoy lugging big numbers of rabbits about then having them to gut and skin. Any other lamping and I'm done and gone quickly too. I find the 15ah with a blitz variable will do me for over 5 hours in the field but I never want to be there that long.
  22. I have the Deben 15 ah for the last three seasons and still going strong but I careful with it. I don't bang it about or pull on the plug and I charge it after each use. There's a thread on the Wildhunter already, here - http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/360576-wildhunter-lithium-barteries/
  23. Nice looking animal Jack. Is he doing much yet?
