I've been into hunting and dogs a lot of years now and I've buried a fair few. You're entitled to your opinion but IMO I can tell you that you can get a lot more from dogs if you actually LIKE them rather than just seeing them as a tool.

I always thought whippets to be quite a long lived dog if looked after well. My last one was 18 when she went and her daughter (a lurcher) was 19. Well fair play to the man if it made him feel better but as said above, I'd rather be on my own or with only the vet 'til the dogs gone, and then on my own to dig the hole and shed a few tears remembering times gone. Don't think I've ever laid a dog in the ground without tears and I couldn't say that about all humans.

Thought he might have some beddy because of the little tassels on the bottom of his ears.

Nice looking hounds. How's the black'n tan bred?

Any Deerhound Based X Pup Suggestions.....
Maximus Ferret replied to ratmogit's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
And generally I agree with you too Lost Generation but........ I'm a member of this forum http://scottish-deerhound.com/ and not only do most of the people not seem to work their dogs but Bill Doherty was advised not to talk on the forum about running game as it gave a bad image to the deerhound. FFS that's DEERhound. If you know people who work their hounds that's great because without that you'll never know which studs might pass on the right temperament to breed a worthwhile lurcher. Each generation that passes with hounds being bred without consideration of whether they are inclined -
Oh The Smell Of The Great British Country Side

Ha ha ha! Spot on. -
There's a limited demand for them for the reasons Leegreen say's above and because they're not so fashionable these days. Anyone who does want one can easily get a well bred one from the non-ped whippet racing crowd so a Hancock type breeder would never make any money from them. I had one myself back in the 80's. Game, fast, easily trained and good strike but with poor feet and easily torn skin she tended to get injured on anything rougher than grass. Cut stoppers, knocked toes, rips etc. etc.

Glad to hear that mate, though there's often no pain with a dislocated kneecap, it just locks the leg up. If I remember right it can be popped back in and sometimes relocates itself but does tend to re occur. Best of luck with it whatever it is.

First Cross Collie Greyhound ???
Maximus Ferret replied to Richie87's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Personally I very much doubt he's going to be as game and hard as a good bull cross but if he's as game and hard as a good collie cross then IMO he's a dog well worth owning and worth breeding from (which after all is what this thread was ment to be about). Keep us informed anyway. -
First Cross Collie Greyhound ???
Maximus Ferret replied to Richie87's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It's pointless arguing with this guy. Who cares whether he likes collie crosses or not?? He isn't going to change his mind and only want's you all to argue anyway. He cricises a dog for showing pain when it's lame FFS. -
Or kneecap maybe? Just a guess but "patella luxation" is not uncommon.

On a dark enough night most rabbits stop just inside the hedge. My collie crosses all learn to slow down and pluck the rabbit out. Only works on a dark night but when he comes back keep the lamp on the hedge and try walking him up to where the rabbit went in so he can smell it. As I say, it only works if it's dark enough but once they learn it they do it themselves.

Any Deerhound Based X Pup Suggestions.....
Maximus Ferret replied to ratmogit's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
, big useless brain dead plodder I wouldn't really consider muntjac as much of a test for a deerhound either, once they know how to take them. If they could drop something twice their own weight I'd be impressed. -
Any Deerhound Based X Pup Suggestions.....
Maximus Ferret replied to ratmogit's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Well, I must have been hallucinating earlier this afternoon then when my deerhound bitch, (bred from a long line of workers or did I hallucinate that as well) was out with the terriers, and appeared to be appeared to be working (and working well) the game they turned out of cover. In my experience something north of 50% of UK deerhounds work live game which is probably a higher percentage of workers that you will find among collies these days most of which don't do anything more than chase balls around the park. I'm a fan of deerhounds but "north of 50%" work live game????? c'mon, surely -

Maximus Ferret replied to ratmogit's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I wouldn't say game exactly.... at least not in the way a good bullcross or wheaton cross is but if they're brought up right with enough confidence in you and in themselves they'll have a good shot at most stuff. That's what I've found anyway. -

LOL 50 - 50 mate -
Great seasonal pics. Looking at the threads on here a few dogs, (my own included) seem to be having some early season injuries. Best of luck to all for the coming season.
