  1. Bred this type of lurcher,..both ways,..some were a success,.. and some were not.. Greyhounds and Sheepdogs vary in their physical construction, and certainly in their temperament... You get all stamps of Greyhound, big chunky un's and small racy feckers,.same with sheepdogs,..some look like long rangy, black and white foxes, whilst others resemble Heinze 59 street hackers Both real different animals,..so personally, I would forget about searching for long tall Sally from the high Peaks or trying to get a line, off last years Derby winner,..and instead,...go for a pair of sensible d
  2. ...Its a sad day/night,.when a running dog,.. decides to quit running . These things happen, they always have ,..and they always will... The facts are,..some dog lads ain't realy quite as into their dogs, as others are. They miss wee signs, that to other men, shout out a warning,..loud and clear as to just what is fast looming upon the horizon This throwing in the towel business, can occur with all lurcher related disciplines.. Possibly it is most obvious in strong dogs that are still sore from their efforts, or with hard run coursing dogs, that have quite plainly, had enough..
  3. @ Foresterj... Certainly my style of cur dog,..realy like it... Poignant and true words there Tomo,....real thought provoking...
  4. Nice type of animal though...
  5. Good call from Malt the Moderator... Its a free country,. folk can say what they like,..even tell spurious tales,.make up shit, that never even happened,..invent arguments that need never have occurred,.the list is endless,..and as I say,.it is a free country. Feck all can be done to stop such things..and lies and bullshit come dirt cheap... But,..as a hunter of the old school (very old school these days )....I would subscribe to the adage, that one should never bad mouth another man's Wife, his kids or wee jukel,...it just ain't done,..it is unnecessary,. and is the action of men with
  6. @ Weasle... I once had a Collie Cur,...she was a splendid retriever,..straight back to hand,.pretty as ya like,..but,.if I took a rabbit/hare/pheasant,.from her,..necked it,.and threw it back out in the field,.for another fetch,..she would shy away from the object as though it was a hot coal ...Real strange sort of animal,..and she could never figure out, why I accepted a catch off her,.then threw it away again... Funny old things these lurchers,....funny old things, .these lurcher men...
  7. @Tomo... Rabbit, Duck or Salmon,..who cares,...a hunting dog is there to catch critters,..end of...
  8. Sirius, I know who IF is ,...cos over the years, I've met such feckers a thousand times,... But,.. IF you're young Collie based hybrid, don't make a fair sort of ferreting jukel,,..then, feck it,.. I'll give up the Jalfrezi
  9. No fecking maybe about it fellah... My family was using collie lurchers long before authors were writing about them,..or men were breeding them,.on masse.. We knows...
  10. Certain publications have popularised the Collie lurcher for the tyro,..but others already knew the score
  11. Think we are going round and round in fecking circles,..and slowly disappearing up our own arses. Folk can keep whatever style of lurcher/running dog,.. that they like,... We all know what type suits our own needs,.. and if that type was no good,. then we would not keep it,...cos that would be,.. extremely silly...
  12. I meant no offence.....I'm sure an Airedale lurcher is great fun to be out with.. Folk can keep any kind of dog that they choose,..it is none of my business,..I was just saying that , here in the UK,.we don't have the testing type of quarry that is available, in other places...and to maintain a line of working style large terriers,..might possibly seem to be a waste of an otherwise splendid canine.. But as I say, that is only a personal view.. and I could well be wrong... I've not seen one now,.for over 30 years,..but a few foxing lads, back in Wales, kept them for the Hill job... I sh
  13. How did everything become so fecking complicated
  14. Would agree fellah,... Never quite got the whole Airedale thing... Here in the UK,..we don't really have the type of quarry for a giant terrier to pursue,.seems a bit of a waste....
  15. Well done for the heads up Raymond Although it is still early,.now is the danger time,...the adders are coming out and lying up, in any warm spot,..they need every ray of sun, to kick start their lives. Once saw a fellow hunter get bitten, by an exceptionally large, dark coloured female Adder... He was picking up, purse nets from a warren that we had working for a fair old while,..we had even had a dig.. The snake must have felt our movements and been aware of our presence, cos we were rushing here and there, necking bolters,..but, she still nabbed his thumb. He was a big old lump of a
  16. I've kept crossbred herding dogs,..all my life,...used other types, for other business, and enjoyed them immensely, but I always return to the mongrel curs..As for brains,.well,... I've seen some reet dumb pastoral types, and one should never equate high intelligence with easy training,.cos it just ain't so... A collie lurcher, that truly favours the collie, in its general outlook,.is not an easy animal for the tyro hunter to handle..Truth is, I've seen lurchers bred from generations of herding dog, that were silly as rooks and even first crosses , half and half,..that in reality, were no br
  17. Yeah good luck and good fortune, to all this years coming crop, of future hunters.. Hey Sirius,...wait till you see my wee fecker do the belly crawl,...talk about,.. 'One Man and His Dog'...
  18. It is an addiction,..and in order to move on,..ya gotta let go....
  19. Them days,..never do end well Brother...
  20. True words Vin... Obviously,.if you are on an earner or rabbit catching,.under orders,.well,.it is a different ball game,.but nowadays,.my life is too short for such things..Personaly,..I like to catch enough rabbits to make the morning buzz and the dogs get their teeth in,.and then, the call of a roaring log fire, a comfortable chair to sink into, jukels lying at my feet, and a strong drink working its magic,..does me nicely... Pressure kills,.and self made pressure is the fecking worst,...been there, done that,..cannot hack it any more....
  21. Don't know anything about using dogs for other quarry,..but, for me,. a genuine rabbiting dog needs to be working, day or night. You just never know how the game is going to play out. Some places have to be ferreted by day, but sometimes , netted by night,..indeed,..lamping with a dazzler, can be a lot more varied than one might first suppose.. It is all down to where you are shining that spotlight, and obviously as to whether you should be there Lurchers,..and lurchermen,..often need a bit of self discipline,..and early education is often the key...
  22. When you get to my age,..you start to forget much of what you have learned,..and need constantly reminding... So,...any advice,.. from any quarter,..is gratefully recieved...
