Would have to agree there.... Most running dog composites will give chase,..some obviously more physically gifted than others,.but as a rule,..they will generaly pursue their quarry... Whereas,..not all lurchers will actively seek out, hunt up and have the ability to locate and catch their chosen prey,...they simply do not have the mentality to do so,..in short, it just ain't their thing..... These days I rarely walk out with a dazzler, and much of my work is done in woodland/brash, etc,.so it is imperative that I keep a dog that will get itself out there,.. and find some rabbits,..or i

Specialist Rabbit Dogs?
Phil Lloyd replied to baldockbanks courser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
You are right fellahs,..rabbit numbers are at a low ebb ,..but,.I believe that a couple of good warm dry Summers should see them, breeding like rabbits,.. and hopefully we will all be back in business once again,...and until that happy day arrives,..we must 'keep on keepin on',.and stick with our specialist bred,..coney catchers... All the best, Phil.. -
In my opinion,....certain types of dog ,.working Sheepdogs, Cattle Dogs,.and perhaps a few exceptionaly driven,.'Battle dogs',...realy do need to have an outlet for their selectively bred urges,..but,.the average running dog composite,.is a wee bit like a cheetah or a lion,.or in fact most other types of predator, inasmuch as it only hunts,.. when it needs to,.and spends most of its life sitting on its arse,.chilling man.. Lurchers make good pets,...all of mine are.... But,.instead of anyone worrying about finding good homes for their jukels, perhaps think deeply if these homes are a

I used to be the worlds worst for laying into a jukel... It has taken me a lifetime to twig on to the fact, that,.whilst you must chastise a wayward cur for obvious unwanted or dangerous behaviour,..there is no call for losing your temper.. To do so, is counter -productive and in terms of canine/human interaction,.it is 100% illogical... I was brought up to 'break' (as opposed to school),..young herders,..( Father and Grandfather schooled Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs)..and they both used old school methods...ouch.. Nowadays,......I rarely lay an angry hand on my mouching curs....

SO sorry to hear about your loss Shadrack... I'm not a coursing man,.I only keep rough and ready hedgerow curs,..nothing of the class that you guys run... However,..although they are mostly pets and of scant value to these dog thieves,..I can definitely imagine how empty and helpless you must feel ...it must be fecking terrible.... I've thought about this Dog and Ferret stealing business for a long time now,..and having given the subject much consideration,..and obviously taken into account the various 'theories' and often crazy reasons put forwards as to WHY ???? My own take on

Well,.I've lived through the best times with lurchers,... Hunted and killed almost every UK critter that could be captured, by a canny canine,.. But,..although I love to see a capable hound in action,..one that can take out most anything that rises in front of it,...I now find myself being drawn back to a place in time, and a stamp of cur that gave me so much happiness and personal contentment......

Does The Shape Of A Dog Affect Its Performance?
Phil Lloyd replied to squab's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
"Good looks don't kill".... -
True... Here in the British Isles,..we are a sensible race of folk,...we know what we need.... If a canine breed/type,..has been allowed to die out,.there is usually a fecking good reason for it... Improve upon what we already have ,..make them stronger, smarter, slicker,.."Let Sleeping dogs Lie "

You are bang on there Wirral,...the silenced .22 rifle and spotlight combo, is deadly efficient..

Those are sensible words,.and to be honest,.it's a maxim that myself (and many of my generation), have always lived with... Good rabbiting spots have always been in short supply 'darn sarf',.so,.it has never paid to broadcast your activities,.. to all and sundry..... I would also add a caviat,..and that is to, 'take them,.. before some other fecker does"....

Mole Trapping For A Living
Phil Lloyd replied to Rat face's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Well,...speaking personally,...I used to trap large acreages of agricultural grassland, and although I enjoyed the work (and all the rabbiting/mouching rights, that often accompanied the job).....nowadays,.I prefer to treat large Country House garden lawns and nice tidy sheep farms,.. and sundry smallholdings.. As a Pest Controller, of several decades now,.I have found that it is favourite, to do less work, for more money,..as opposed to being, a rushed of me feet,.busy, busy,..fool.. Obviously,.you have to find your own place in the industry, and geographically,..the remuneration for tradi -
A good working lurcher is an investment,..so there is no hurry to be doing too much,.. of anything... Personaly,..I would allow the dog as much freedom to run and play, as is safe to do so,..and concentrate 100% on socialisation, socialisation,.socialisation..... This is an all important attribute, in the 21st Century,.lots of things for a raw boned youngster to take in, understand,..appreciate and hopefully not be fearful of...Once a young canine feels comfortable and secure with everything around him,.the actual schooling bit,..ain't rocket science...so,.just get yourself out and about,

I was freelancing on a nice steep bank one morning,...and the owner came stomping across the warren,..intent on grabbing hold of me.. He was real angry...shadow boxing,...teeth grinding,.you fecking name it... I told him straight,.."C'mon now old fellah,..calm yourself down,.no need for us to have a battle",..to which he replied,."Why didn't you ask me for permission to come on" ? Seeing that he had calmed down a bit, I faced him and enquired,.. "Would you have given me permission for the rabbits if I had asked" ? " Certainly bloody not",..he replied.... "Well,.that is w

Get offered these type of jobs on a regular basis.... Back in the day,..local authorities paid real well,..and more importantly,.they allowed you (the contractor) ..to get on with the job,.as you saw fit. Nowadays,..there is so much legislation and pressure from 'the powers that be',...and a genuine fear of causing a stir or of upsetting sensitive folk,.that,..in many cases the job ain't worth the hassle.. In truth,..it is often best, to walk away........
