  1. Strange old things them Merles.. but good fun...
  2. A few years ago,..I took a bitch on for training... She was an exceptionally well made, beautiful creature,.and she could spin rabbits and hares over real sharpish,..however,..I found her prey drive to be off the richter scale,... I tried every trick that I knew, but she still ragged several sheep and goats,..so...it was goodbye Vienna.. The 3/8 x 5/8 combo, in lurcher production, is not a new concept,..although from a commercial aspect, it is a sensible option, ....and the resulting progeny definitely look the part.
  3. Super fast,.interesting and exciting wee hunting dogs...love em...
  4. Firstly Sesku,. your young jukel looks real nice,...just my type... I've always kept such beasts,.and in truth, some of them have been real strange beasts.. Personaly,.I class a dog as being a genuine cur,.not solely due to its ancestors,.but more so by the way it behaves,.hunts, mouches, etc... As an aside,..I would wish all Hunting Life members a good festive Xmas,.and of course a great New Year... All the best, Phil.
  5. We have not gone off track,...well I ain't... The answer to such a suggestion is plainly fecking obvious, and as such,..requires little thought or debate,... If a fool of a man shoots, kills or injures your dog,.simply for chasing a poxy hare, deer or pheasant,...then of course,..you must offer instant retribution towards him,....or live with your shame for all eternity....
  6. Coming from a rural background,.(my own Father being a Shepherd),..and often hunting amidst fields choc-full of livestock,..I was brought up with the premise that,.if your jukel killed or badly damaged a ewe,...you were obligated to cull him yourself..and,.then,..having done so,...the incident is forgotten,.....life moves on....
  7. Swimming is great exersise for cur dogs,.and once they are launched,.....there is definitely no going back,...or picking and choosing their runs
  8. In my opinion,...it is all down to what quarry you are after... These debates could go on and on,.ad-infinitum,...and it is surely possible within such a unique hunting man's website, to seperate,..once and for all,.the dyed in the wool, rabbiters/ferrets/netsmen,..from the lads who specialise,.and love 'other pursuits'.... In doing so,.it would prevent so much needless confusion....
  9. I'll second that Fuji... I remember Joe from the old Shooting News days,..he was keen on his terriers back then,..and was not scared to speak his mind. A superb gesture regarding the kiddies Hospital,.and I'm pleased to see a veteran hunter,.still at the game...
  10. Although we try to find open warrens for the craic,..and of course for letting the dog have a sprint,...90% of my work is amongst woodland brash and seemingly endless fecking hedgerows....Some of them go on for miles,...literally... When netting bramble covered banks and similar places,..(and it is not always possible, or suitable to use the stop nets)...I like the net to travel fast and purse instantly the rabbit enters the meshes...(I also like a wee dog to be on the scene),...but,.if a dog is not allowed,..I invariably set the net over the burrow and then,..slide the ring down tight as
  11. In my opinion,..having owned a few serious minded feckers,...I have found that dogs who take the game too seriously,.too young,..rarely make old bones...
  12. Goodonya young fellah... Considering the difficulties you face,.re; Transport, etc,..it is good to see you staying keen and hungry for the game....I used to be just like you,..I only wish I still had that primitive hunger. All the best, Phil..
  13. ALL dogs,..are different....and once the trainer realises this ,..the job generally gets a wee bit easier..
  14. Yep... In answer to your question...the head was found in Devon....in much the same condition..
  15. Whippets,..Peds or Non-Peds,.are fabulous wee hunters,...and it is their amazing innate,.prey drive,. that makes them so dynamic and mind blowingly impressive...I've seen whippets catch rabbits,. that few other canine breeds could ever hope to stop,... Unfortunately,.it is the very quality that we value in them,..their amazing will to win and a primitive determination to do or die,.whilst pursuing their quarry,..that often seals their fate....I've owned whippets and spudo whippets,..that literally got away with murder,. and even made old bones,.but almost always,..due to their action packe
  16. Just watched the wee clip....real interesting to see what goes on in the darkness..
  17. What causes this to occur....looks a wee bit John Merrick..
  18. Would agree wholeheartedly Tiercel,...and on open, clear warrens, where the dog can see the captured coney clearly, well held in the long net...there is no need to get involved,...however,..in deep brash, bramble or amongst the darkness and debris of the woodland floor,.a dog is often confused as to whether the shushi is well in,. or getting out of a purse net,.and in many cases a keen dog will effect a hold,. until you can get down and dirty yourself.. In situations such as these,..I would expect a ferreting dog to help out,..
  19. Back in the day, when I was financially involved with a Field Sports Supplies business,...we bought in,. a large quantity of black netting...The mesh came in at a reasonable wholesale price,. and this enabled us to line the webs,... and market them as the very much, in vogue,. 'Stealth Nets'... We sold a fair few...
