  1. 3 1/2, quite a decent size for a whippet but f**k me he will pile in on anything given a chance ??. Bought as a specialised rabbit dog, I blame the prick that trained him...
  2. I’ve always had the opposite problem! Buggers want to hunt everything wether they are allowed or not! Whippet that wants to try his luck on fallow stags is an emotional business!
  3. @cantona tried to message you but says can’t receive messages...
  4. I work a pure whippet i have spoken about him a fair bit in other threads but 100% quality rabbit dog seems impervious to cold, last weekend was charging through ice after rabbits in a -10 wind and just didn’t care (I very much did and gave up after a few frozen hours much to his disgust!). Will happily take on fallow deer despite my desperate attempts to break him to them. Downsides are he is very hard mouthed and can sometimes just do his own thing (like the deer) but I think my limited skills as a dog trainer are at fault rather than the dog.
  5. App on my phone said real feel -11 and it bloody felt like it!! Did an hour and half on Saturday and gave up ??
  6. I always find that tame parents breed tame offspring. I’ve had litters I’ve barley handled that we’re still pretty tame but nothing beats kits handled daily from a young age. Pair I’ve got I bred in the summer were excessively handled (lockdown f all else to do) and I honestly don’t think either has so much as nipped me and both work well, the hob will actually come when called when out ferreting if he is in the mood!
  7. How many you got there Trev? Hell of a haul ??????
  8. Can get mixi rabbits anytime of year, hopefully just because you’ve caught one doesn’t mean there will lots more.
  9. Good to hear Keith, what are you doing with no dog? Snares? Air rifle?
  10. Yes saw some pictures of those seemed useful bushing/ratting/ferreting types.
  11. I am sure it’s no secret it’s a chap called Paul Waddington. I was going to have a pup and had a nice chat with him on the phone seemed genuine but didn’t work out in the end.
  12. Yes my beddy/whip I had before him was the same, like you just accepted it. He is around 21tts, so fair size for a whippet. He isn’t perfect far from it but he does what I want him to and hunt pretty much on my own so only has to please me!
  13. I do get a bit frustrated people slagging whippets off that don’t own or work them or even worse having a pop at them because they can’t kill and retrieve a red stag ?. They are only good for rabbits....yes exactly. Whilst I have no issue people hunting what they like rabbits are the only legal quarry we can run in this country and some people (like myself) just really enjoy running the humble rabbit and want a dog suited to rabbit work. I have owned many lurchers (big and small) and currently have a large ped x non ped male whippet and for rabbits he is spot on as good any of the lurchers. Ma
  14. I just will never understand how anyone is comfortable with the Brussels set up. You hate Boris and the cons fine you at least have to respect the fact more people voted for him than your preference but the real power base in Brussels is just jobs for the boys, backhanders and full blown nepotism with no chance for the people they govern to vote them in or out! Even if they were doing an amazing job (they are not!) the point of democracy is the people decide who governs them. That was the heart of Brexit, accountability. How anyone can still think we should be part of that shambles blows my mi
  15. New model??? 10 locators is a serious haul no need for all them, share the wealth ?
  16. When I voted was 80/20 in favour of a ban it’s now 58/42 in favour of keeping hunting with dogs. Good stuff lads keep voting.
  17. Having a decent enough season, been lucky that I have a lot of permission within approx 5 miles from home and the majority haven’t had a problem me going right through the lockdowns (it is legal after all but I do understand why some wouldn’t want you on). I have a whippet now 3 years old and close to his prime I guess who has been a pleasure to work on the rabbits just a shame he won’t leave the bloody deer alone ??
  18. Dogs looking good mate ??. How are you getting on with the new permission?
  19. Once they get to that can hardly move eyes full of puss I don’t even like touching them (bit wet I know but they are rank) if they just have a mild symptoms then no problem at all to eat or give to the ferrets.
  20. A very strong point about a light harvest as you put it, I couldn’t agree more. At this stage in the rabbits fight against the disease it’s imperative that the rabbits that are left aren’t wiped out. I now only ever take a small crop and do just enough to keep a permission so as to keep a healthy stock for the future.
  21. Interesting to hear that they are back in big problem numbers again, even if it’s a little longer than I would have hoped it does back up my point the rabbit is a born breeder and survivor! Long love the humble bunny!
  22. Had a couple of milky ones but not pregnant ??. Noticed all the bucks bollocks are back last few weeks, getting a bit extra when I piss them out! I think the wet weather puts them back, noticed last year they seemed a little later than normal and jan/feb were very wet. Makes sense no point having a litter only for them to drown.
  23. RVHD2 has only really been around for 4-6 years depending on which part of the country your in but is now widespread and endemic to the uk rabbit population so you really need to give them time to recover. My positive outlook is from first the fact that mixi absolutely destroyed rabbits in this country and whilst some places have been hit hard it’s nothing like what mixi did, read up about the devastation it caused or ask some old boys a lot of people just gave up keeping ferrets altogether and the working breeds almost died out but rabbits recovered and relatively speaking pretty quickly real
  24. See plenty of bags of decent numbers on social media from all round the country, know a few welsh lads that seem to catch a fair few and the dales lads still seem to catch enormous amounts of coney. I think rabbits are suffering badly from RVHD2 and most areas have seen declines but I have great faith that rabbits will do what they do best which is survive and breed and will be back. Mixi killed 99% of rabbits and they came back. RVHD2 was bad in Australia for a 5-10 years and then stopped having an effect. Be patient don’t kill to many of what’s left and they will return.
