Just started and feel like giving in
Bobtheferret replied to mhopton's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Only real reason to get upset is if you’ve driven a fair few miles to a spot and then someone has already been that night/is on it and therefore ruined your sport but realistically everyone on here has poached especially at night. You may well have shit them up now so they might not be back for a bit. I do understand your frustration but as others have said be grateful you have good land and a good dog and be a bit more relaxed if possible. Definitely not worth giving up the game over. -
Well done mate, looks a good day and decent numbers.
-
Only a .22 and generally like to get fairly close and normally shooting off the shoulder or laying flat. I don’t ever shoot anything other than rabbits and if shooting at night would probably get even closer than during the day. Got a few spots that are hard to shoot during the day (just can’t get close enough) and I can’t get in there with the ferrets so thought it would be good to try and thin them out at night when it’s a bit easier.

Thanks for the advice seems about a 3rd cheaper on first glance. The pard perform well in the day also?
-
Thanks for the reply. I doubt I’d ever shoot further than that and already have a pulsar spotter that does a very good distance.

Biggest march/protest in British history (still to this day) and made absolutely f all difference. The powers that be do what they want and don’t give a f**k about the people that actually understand the issues, in this case the countryside and hunting.

I am thinking of getting a scope I can use for all times as I only own one rifle and don’t really need another as only do rabbits really but would like to be able to do some night shooting or stay out after it’s dark without having to change scopes/guns. Are these types of scopes good? Had a little look at the pulsar digex c50 which looks good but is expensive. Anyone got one of these? Worth the money? Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Whist disease (both mixi and RVHD2) have had big impact on rabbit numbers in my area the permissions that I know (bar the odd bit of poaching) I am the sole controller of rabbits still have a population on not huge but enough that they could recover. I only take the odd one or two to show face and keep the permission. Areas where rifle lads are out as well as me ferreting or other ferreters that purse net and long net and take every rabbit are very very low on numbers. Not rocket science I know but my point is over hunting is as big a problem if not bigger than disease, a lot of people just bl

In the wild they would still have to hunt when pregnant, would try and avoid it when they are nearing term

Seen a couple of posts on insta also from shooting lads saying numbers seem up…not for long judging by the bags of rifled rabbits they are posting but still a good sign. Not sure about numbers my way (south east) look low still (would say similar to last few years) but still a few around. Good luck and have a good season
-
Is that not as many about numbers? That’s a seasons worth of rabbits and some down south ?. Fair play to you, enjoy it whilst you have it.

If this is true it sums up everything that’s wrong with the police especially concerning rural matters. Two f***ing pigeons when there’s 9 year old being killed due the complete lack of police presence in this country.
-
Having read Phil’s books I think the road kill he talks about was EXTREMELY fresh and not always taken near a road if you get my drift….

I know some shoots wanted to put birds down but couldn’t get them due to the issues with bringing in poults from France etc. Sad as is it is I can’t see big shooting carrying on for that much longer, just the way the winds are blowing. Would have a horrible impact on the countryside and nature but the Packams of this world are unfairly supported by powerful idiots.

One of the best ferrets I’ve ever owned was a 3 year old Jill I got that had been living off cat food in a tiny cage in someone’s kitchen it’s entire life. She worked like an absolute demon from the first time I tried to the day she died. 20 years later her blood still runs through my line. I have also had older ferrets had no work for a variety of reasons that when eventually given their chance have worked very well.

The war is a very nice distraction for fuel prices going skyward. They were doing this already way before the war started, you can’t shut economy’s down and then pump free money into them on the scale the government (and many other governments) did with out consequences. Our energy policy has also hugely let us down bowing to woke eco loons and stop North Sea oil and gas drilling meaning we are hugely reliant on overseas for gas and oil. The whole thing is an enormous f**k up in government policy and they are now able to conveniently blame the war for all their f**k ups and who suffers? Us lot

I would say personally I have seen mixi strike at anytime but is definitely worst and most common September/October time. Fingers crossed for you it’s just a one off.

My Whippet pup mooching around

Mines ferreted in bitter winds and snow and doesn’t seem to bother him as long as something is happening gets a touch cold if it’s very slow but basically not bothered by bad weather. -

I personally hate bloody deer, more around me than rabbits but I have no interest in them and no way of taking one so they are just a bloody pain in the arse! Dogs sound with sheep but can’t break him to deer, the harder they kick the keener he seems. Thought a sound kicking might put him off but just makes him more determined ? -

Lovely pups lads. I have a non ped whippet and can be a bit head strong at times but a cracking rabbit dog and bloody keen on deer mainly fallow round me but reckon he would take a roe given the chance, fallow are to much though poor f****r gets dragged round the field. Doesn’t stop him trying though ?? -
Amazing if you have the money you can get good value, saw a 166 acre parcel of some lovely farm land but no buildings or planning for 1.2m but then a couple of acres with planning 500k all within 5 miles of each other, Madness. I would love to buy 10acres of pure farm land at 100k but they don’t sell farm land in 10 acre parcels. Best start playing the lottery I guess….

Doubt to many of those dogs make old bones, some challenging terrain there for sure. Although the risk is mitigated by the volume of dogs meaning most of the rabbits make it about 2 foot! Wouldn’t want to be digging the ferret out on that though!
-
Would agree with that. Adult rabbit to much for a buzzard but young uns definitely and seen plenty of poults taken
-
If they survived mixi and came back they will come back from this, thing is RVHD2 has only been widespread for around 5 years so got to give it time and they will recover.
-
That shows rather starkly the impact of RVHD2 on the rabbit population. The thing I find strange is how certain areas seem unaffected. You see the numbers some lads still catch is insane when other areas that used to be plentiful are very low indeed. As said many times before in other threads if left alone I still feel they can and indeed will recover but only if the survivors aren’t hammered. I believe, again from previous threads, toolbox is ahead of our curve in nz and they did recover over there but if there is nothing left they have no chance!
